Back then, what I remembered most were the beautiful porcelain pieces inside the mansion. Afterwards, now that I keep coming back as an adult, it's the Chinese Gardens that are my favorite. This place is the closest thing to being both in China and Europe. It's all very refined and beautiful. At the same time, it's welcoming and not intimidating. I've heard children playing in the Chinese garden while at the same time listened to elderly people conversing with each other in Chinese under the shade of one of the many pagodas. That being said, as beautiful and tranquil as the scenery is, it's not quiet. There's too many people to have true peace and quiet. Nonetheless, I remember thinking to myself as I stared at the Chinese bridge with 3 arches that reflected 3 perfect circles in the water "I don't want to go inside. This is the type of scenery that painters paint. I'm looking at the real thing." However, this time around I came during a heat wave and I did spend more time in the exhibits than I normally would just to be in the AC. I usually come during fall and winter, but what drew me out in summer was the hope of seeing not 1, but 2 corpse flowers in bloom. Unfortunately, I've now learned that by the time I've learned they've bloomed, it's too late. When I arrived they were both dead, corpses in and of themselves. It would've been better if I had come earlier when they hadn't bloomed yet because at least then they would've still been standing. There's no dress code, but the women noticeably dress up in sundresses both to stay cool and because the setting sets itself up for taking beautiful photos. I would also recommend bringing parasols/umbrellas and refillable water bottles. As many times as I've been here, I'm sure I'll come back even though tickets are a bit expensive at $34 each. Maybe one of these days I'll actually see a corpse flower in full bloom. I'll just need to remember to bring a collapsible stool for the long line to see it.

I then told him that she's a service animal and he asked what task she performs as is customary. But once I said her task, he laughed at me and said he had never heard of a dog who "does that". I told him I have a disability that requires her and he eventually let me in. But he had an overall negative rude condescending demeanor and didn't seem to like working there. This was highly triggering for me and actually triggered my CPTSD because it never feels great to have your disability or needs not taken seriously. Not everyone's disability is visible and for it to be laughed at felt very insensitive. It makes me not wanna go there that much in the future now because I know it's always gonna be triggering for me if that worker is there. I couldn't relax the whole time I was there cause I felt so distressed by this.

It felt like stepping into another world. We also enjoyed wandering through the oak woodland and catching the beautiful seasonal blooms. Everything was in full glory! We brought the kids and they had a blast riding the little train (super fun and a great way to see more of the grounds). The staff was friendly, the paths are easy to walk, and there are plenty of benches to sit and soak it all in. It's the perfect spot for a relaxing day date, family outing, or even a peaceful solo walk. Admission is reasonable and totally worth it. We'll definitely be back for the special events and different seasons. Highly recommend!

While my two fave ladies were spending time together, my son and I spent quality time together watching the movie The Odyssey at Regal La Canada. The Odyssey was a very entertaining movie that I highly recommend and watching this summer blockbuster at Regal La Canada made for good first time experience there. It's more of an old school movie theater with quality customer service and tasty food. When we entered the small strip mall with the movie theater was the main focal point, I was a little confused because the signage on the building was United Artists (UA) theater not Regal theaters. If you've lived in California awhile, then you should be familiar with the UA brand movie theaters, which is why I had a sense of nostalgia seeing the UA moniker. UA was purchased by Regal, so this movie theater is part of the Regal movie theater chain specifically located in La Cañada Flintridge. There are a few other shops located in this strip mall, but the one I remember is North Shore Burgers. There is plenty of parking at this location and the traffic flow is one way as you enter the strip mall. We watched The Odyssey during matinee hours, so it wasn't that crowded, but I got the feel that this wasn't a busy movie theater. The staff here provided quality customer service and were friendly. I had ordered tickets the day before, but mistakenly purchased tickets for the wrong day. I left a message to request a refund and when I tried to call a second time, a manager answered while I was leaving a message and she promptly refunded my money providing quality service like her staff. Regal UA La Canada gives off an old school vibe. The movie theater definitely needs some modernizing with regards to their leather recliner chairs and the layout of their seats, but I actually liked the old school vibe. When your order popcorn, the staff asks if you want butter and they're the ones placing butter into your popcorn. I prefer self service, but they did a good job buttering my popcorn. The popcorn was fresh when I initially ordered and when I requested a refill. My son ordered a pepperoni pizza and that too came out well made with the cheese melted and the crust crunchy. Their leather seats aren't the electronic recliners, but rather they're the pull out lever old school recliners. They worked fine and the leather seating was comfortable. Even the restrooms were old school, but they were clean. There were also some arcade games for the kids to occupy themselves while waiting or after watching a movie. While my two fave ladies spent quality time together, my son and I got to hang out and watched a Must See movie The Odyssey. We had a fun first time experience at Regal UA La Canada.

The theatre is small with large, comfy leather recliners to sit in. The recliners had a cup holder and were spaced far enough from the seats in front to give you plenty of room to walk by without interrupting the other patrons. The theatre and restrooms were clean and maintained. The concession stand serve standard moving theatre snacks & beverages - no gourmet food or cocktails. The map on the event's website was very helpful (http://www.pfarcf.org/images/taste/Taste2014Map.pdf). It lists the restaurants that have ticket sales ($30 per person), and they take plastics! They provided wristbands, a ticket, and a map. This year there were 29 participating locations. However, 2 were connected (Bar Celona and Sorisso), and one I could not locate at all (iPic). I got pretty full after the first 5 stops already, so I think the $30 was worth it. I loved Himalayan Cafe's chicken tikka marsala and Sugar Fix's smores bar. Cafe Santorini was my last stop, and the waiter was extremely friendly and amazing. The bartender at IX Tapa was funny, but the food was just average. (Since we went during happy hour, the martinis were $5. Then we found out later that on Tuesdays, Equator has $1 martinis!). The lady at Umami Burger was super helpful as well. I'll definitely be coming back to those locations. The only non-food place was the Dog Bakery, which was a great place for pet owners! The 2 places I would not return: 1) At Vertical Wine Bistro, the hostesses told us we could choose anything on the happy hour menu. But the waitresses told us we were limited to fries and margherita pizza. After we sat for 5 minutes waiting for a waitress, the group before us told us they ordered fries and pizzas but they waited too long and were leaving. After another 5 minutes, we got the fries. After another 5 minutes, we left and let the next group get our pizza. 2) The worst place was Meat District Co. The guy seated us and never came back with menus or waters. In fact, nobody came around until I flagged someone down to get water for us. We left after 10 minutes of waiting.

Eventually word of mouth made its way to France, where it was called "Le Lotto," a game of chance enjoyed by wealthy aristocrats, before catching on in Germany and then finally, to the the United States in the 1920's, when it was called "Beano" because dried beans were used to mark the winning numbers. BEANO became BINGO when a player accidentally yelled "Bingo!" instead of "Beano!" out of sheer excitement and the name was forever changed. A Catholic priest then had the grand idea to use Bingo as a means to help raise church funds during the Great Depression and the rest is history. America's beloved pastime's popularity started to wane in the 90's and 2000's but I'm glad to say Bingo is back, baby, and stronger than ever, judging from the crowds of young influencers and old sticklers alike that come to play this game. Bell-Jeff Bingo, which gathers every Tuesdays from 4pm is by far the best Bingo Hall in the vicinity. It is a clean, bright and calm space, with lots of parking right outside and the most interesting players (hustlers!?) and the nicest, most patient flash card runners/volunteers. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the food, such as burgers, tacos, and grilled cheese that you can order and eat while you're playing. The whole experience lends to a night of fun and relaxation, a truly wonderful social community event. All the players tell me it's not about the winning that's addictive when it comes to Bingo, oh no, no. It's the whole experience leading up to that win. It's the slow building of anticipation and manifestation, the prayers, laughter, comradery and then finally, the realization of the win. Everyone should experience this euphoric feeling of calling out "Bingo!" and winning $$$ because it is a feeling like no other. Come and experience for yourself because it is like nothing else.
