St Chads Place is down a cobbled alleyway which has long been the night time hangout for smack heads and prostitutes. Not a promising site for a cool trendy place like St Chads. But it's going to be OK. As the council desperately sweep the less fortunate down the road to Campden so the foreigners off the eurostar don't realise how backwards Britain really is, the place gets a little 'nicer' every day. And this little patch begind Kings Cross has started to attract design and architects business. Lots of smart expensive glasses frames walking about now. St Chad's Place is a single dining room which is quite striking because it's got huge high ceilings and a lovely concrete floor giving it a warehouse feel. The whole back wall is one photograph. of a train station I think. Apt as the metropolitan line runs right by the side of the place. You could be in a gallery of some sort. It's got that sort of feel, but it certainly isn't precious. They've left it quite casual. You can wander in and buy a take away sandwich or sit down at one of the tables and order from the small but interesting menu. Or design a new-fangled building on your mac on one of the armchairs provided whilst slurping a good quality coffee. When we first started going here after we moved to the area (advertising. Now THERE goes the neighbourhood!) we felt they were possibly over-stretching themselves with the menu. Very eclectic choices which sometimes simply weren't pulled off. However, each time we've gone the food has got noticably better. A venison steak and chips was excellent most recently and reasonable value at £13. A soused mackerel starter was also particularly good although quite challenging to one of our party who found the vinegar hadn't had enough of a cooking effect yet. Maybe still stuff to be worked on. It's bright, it's spacious, it's not too fussy, they keep the menu compact and interesting. The service is good. It's a place that seems to believe in what it's doing. They care about the food and the surroundings. It gets better every time we go. It gets three stars from me now but I've no doubt it will get four before long and I will continue being a regular.

I was in an experimental mood and with my other half gone on a business trip, I browsed through my bookmarks list on the Yelp App until this place came up ;-) When I arrived, I was welcomed by Alan, one of the owners, and was seated right away. Turns out it was a very slow evening, which Alan attributed to the fact that it was Marathon Sunday in London. Well, good for me, as I had all the attention of the staff and therefore had a very pleasant dining experience. My favourite part of Del Parc is that I don't have to make a decision when it comes to food...in fact, you cannot make a decision. You just tell the staff about any dietary limitations you might have and off they go. I was reading on the blog of the Kentishtowner that this idea has evolved from the fact that many of the regular patrons just told the chef to prepare whatever he deemed to be best. This is my kind of restaurant ;-) And soon the platters (tapas) started appearing: at first a charcuterie selection, accompanied with pickles and filled olives. Then, a plate of Galician mussels was placed in front of me...and I was at first a little shocked. I should mention that I don't like mussels, but I had made a pact with the staff and my dietary limitations didn't include mussels. Well, turns out I actually do like mussels and I would've never found out, if I wasn't "forced" to eat them. The following dishes were spinach with pine nuts and marinated raisins, followed by king prawns in a very garlicky sauce. I confessed to Alan that I'm no pro in eating prawns and he suggested to just use my hands and dig out as much meat as possible. As this was a very messy undertaking, he brought me a bowl with lemon water to wash my hands in afterwards. He also brought me some additional baguette to soak up the garlic sauce. When I said that you don't need to make any decision here, then I was slightly incorrect: you do need to make a decision about what you want to drink. I went for sherry, as this fit perfectly into my experimental mood...being somewhat of a sherry-virgin ;-) I really liked the sherry that Alan chose for me, although I thought it was a little to chilled. After I'd finished my meal, I engaged in a longish conversation with Alan - given that there were no other customers, he was able to dedicate a lot of attention to me. He told me that they'd been at this place for about 12 years now and that before this little tapas place, he and his partner-in-crime, Steve (the chef) had actually run a deli nearby. Overall I really liked it here and I will have to come back with more people - given that this is a tapas place, it ought to be more fun to sample more dishes.

It is quite a small restaurant, and they were too full for us to reserve a table, so we just sat by the bar at the front. The staff were friendly and helpful and the smells coming from the kitchen made me hungry as soon as we stepped inside the door!! They have a tapas menu, an a la carte menu and the chefs menu (where they just keep bringing you food until you roll out happy and full...for £30.) We (of course) went for the chefs menu, and I am sooo glad we did. I didn't take any photos of the first few dishes as we were hungry and the lads I was with ate half of everything before I could get my camera out... but I remembered for about half the dishes - have a peek at my photos for a better description than I could possibly paint with words. Marc and I normally try to avoid Spanish food (as Marc's mother is from Catalonia and is such a good cook, that normally tapas in England is rubbish in comparison.) This is the first time we have ever found a Spanish place that we both love... we're even considering bringing Marc's mum to try it next time she comes to London. The decor of the restaurant is quite funny - loads of vaguely Italian (mostly mobster) movie posters - it would work if they were all cool/vintage but ends up looking a bit naff. However, that's quite charming. The overall ambiance is pretty Long Island, which is kind of hilarious for Kingston Vale. The bambini menu features characters from Bugsy Malone! Nice work with the mirrors to make it look large and light. I will return here because a local independent restaurant in an almost completely residential neighbourhood is worth supporting. The first one was the cheese zucchini sticks and bruschetta bites. If you are vegetarian, I'm not sure you would be well accommodated entree wise. Most of the entree's I felt were plain and dry. The desserts look more impressive than they taste. I would never urge anyone to go here for good food. But if you're hungry and don't mind paying for plainness and just want to be fed, which sometimes I do because after a long day, I just don't want to cook, then this place is great! Thankfully, this pub now has a professional manager who treats his staff and customers with the respect they deserve. In the short time that he has been here he has transformed the pub from a drinking hole for a few regulars and for a few underage louts to play pool to a modern stylish establishment providing good real ale and first class food. The pool tables have gone, along with the youth element and any drug problem there was has been totally dealt with. There is a visible increase to the amount of regulars that now comes in and these are of all shapes and sizes. Literally! What I mean is there are more women and families coming in especially on Sunday's for the excellent Sunday Roast. Money has been spent on the decor along with new windows and big screen TV's. There is a warm and friendly atmosphere here now which is a complete contrast to years gone by. The best endorsement I can give to back this up is to say that my wife said she would be happy to walk in to the pub on her own for a drink, and wouldn't feel uncomfortable.
