I brought in a huge tub of dvd's and movies to sell since I was de-cluttering my garage and found myself lost in records , toys , posters , collectibles and flashback movies . Very fun place & while the sale took all day before they were ready for me to come back and cash out , it was pretty smooth and I can't complain about $100 + for all the movies . There is something special and nostalgic about shopping in a record store. For me, it takes me back to the late 70s early 80s and purchasing albums, 45s and 12" LP singles. I also enjoyed listening to music being played while shopping at Zia's. This record store has been my go to for a very long time. It has a massive selection and the all employees are helpful and friendly. Honestly I think the prices are similar to other places but just know that they do not give you a refund for something you bring back. They will give you store credit or you can exchange it for something at same value. I do appreciate them taking music as a trade or credit. I had a CD from 2017 that I bought and never opened. I received some credit for it, better than it sitting in my cabinet unopened and unplayed. I also really think it is cool listening to a new album on release day. They have listening parties now! BEST STORE TO SPEND HOURS BROWSING! I frequent all of the Zia Records locations up in the Phoenix valley, so I had to come to this one too! I was very impressed by the amount of Japanese music they had here, I even scored a Mariya Takeuchi album, and it was a good cost comparable to online websites. One thing I did not like about this location is that the world section was sorted by alphabetical order, and most(all?) the locations in the Phoenix valley sort it by where it comes from, so if you're only looking for Indian or French music you don't have to dig through all of the world section. The workers here were very friendly, even more than the ones up in Phoenix! The store is a little small so there is a tight squeeze in the aisles, but it's OK, I will definitely be back next time I'm in Tucson! read more

I was in Tucson this past weekend from Phoenix. I stopped in Zia to see how it compares to the Phoenix locations I know and love. I was NOT disappointed! The service here was stellar. I overheard several interactions between the clerks and customers, and each was so helpful and engaged! This location is full to the brim with selection on vinyl, CDs, movies, and Funko Pops. I'm a major Zia fan but this location is definitely smaller than what those form Phoenix may be used to. Seems that the used vinyl selection isn't as big as others but a decent selection for new. The organization of the DVDs was a bit chaotic also and the video game selection was certainly lacking. However, it's still a Zia and I found some gems I had been looking for. If you have the patience to dig through sale bins and explore you'll usually be rewarded. Don't forget a Z card! read more

I grew up going to Zia Record Exchange in Phoenix in the 80s. I enjoyed being able to trade in older music to get newer music, and the wide selection of music genres. This was my first time in this Zia record exchange and it was quite smaller than the other Zias that I have been to in the past and they now do all kinds of items besides music. For example they they have a large section of DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K ultra discs, etc. They sell both new and used DVDs. I only had a few minutes to spare and the DVDs did not seem to be organized consistently for example I found Star Wars movies in 2 or 3 different sections. The staff was friendly but did not go out of their way to see if I needed or wanted help and they definitely were congregating behind the 2 counters. I was able to find a used 4K disc for $18 for a movie that is about a year old, probably $30-35 new so seemed to be comparable to other places that sell used 4K discs. It appears that they still deal in vinyl records so that is great to know since I have some more to trade in. read more

What brought me to Zia? I recently discovered a long-lost 78 rpm record my uncle (who was a Marine stationed in Hawaii) made for my Dad back in 1947. I have no way to play this record so I thought maybe the folks at Zia could help me. They directed me to Draco's studio nearby for assistance on digitizing it. That will be my next stop. I sure hope they can help me convert it. While I was in the store I decided to check it out. Yes, the vinyl record selection is huge as well as the wide range of CD's. T-shirts and gag gifts galore. Everytime I'm in town, I visit all the zia records. Not only do they have a healthy stock of Vinyl records, they always have a good amount of used toys/collectibles and other random goodies you won't find in regular retail stores. I'm here for the records--specifically the Latin/Mexican records. As a tourist, I thought the selection was surprisingly smaller than expected but still happily left with a good 10 LPs I was excited about. Place overall looks to have a good selection of records. Even on a Monday morning, it was a busy place with plenty of staff (masked up!) ready to help. It's been many years since I was in Zia records. I enjoyed coming here back in the day, when it had a lot more music and VHS tapes. When I first walked in, I was greeted by a very familiar smell. Every Zia uses the same brand of incense to my knowledge. I am not, and never have been a huge fan of it, which is why I avoid going in for more that a few minutes. They have an excellent selection of Blu Ray movies. One of the great things about this place is that you can often find stuff here that you cannot find anywhere else. I was very impressed to find that out. They do have some merchandise, but their selection is lame. I came in to find a specific gift for a friend, however, I found out that they were sold out. Instead of supporting a local business, I had to go on Amazon to obtain it. Oh well. Still, this is a great place. I highly recommend a visit. However, know that the incense here can be very strong, so if you have a sensitive nose like I do, I'd advise caution. read more

I could no longer keep this review to myself, I'm breaking my silence: You can find me here during the weekends searching through a vast section of their used vinyls or through the thousands of fresh, never been opened vinyl. They have a points program, and I don't mean to brag, but I have a lot of points. Yea, I give them a lot of my money, and one day I'm gonna use my points on that big purchase in which I'll get 50% off. You need to pay attention to the deals they have throughout the week. Make sure to use your 20% off coupon for doing a quick survey on your following visit, I love that thing. One day I walked in, and they were giving a discount if you would just talk about Harry Potter with them, yes! Sometimes I wonder how they make money with all those sweet deals, and then I realize I'm that junkie that keeps coming back throwing my money at those deals. They have novelty items, gaming stuff, racks on racks of CDs and DVDs, posters, record players new used, books, comics, t-shirts, local concert info and tickets, and anything your yearning heart desires when it comes to entertainment. Why can I say this place is full of cool stuff for cool people. Great fun items like used music, movie and games. They also have T-Shirt, novelties and poster. They are one of the last great outposts for new & used Vinyl, compact disks, dvd's, and blu-rays. The quality of their pre-owned items is impeccable. I've never had an issue. The staff is colorful, kind, and engaging. I absolutely love it. Reminds me a bit of second spin in Van Nuys, before they had to close, only the people that work here are way nicer. They offer incredibly fair prices for trades or even decent cash. They will actually buy your stuff! Smells good and peaceful, a really nice vibe. I just even like going in there--even if I don't buy anything (don't you do that though, if you go in, then buy something). They have a wealth of knowledge. I believe some people call that culture? They play good music and it's not too loud. Support your local businesses, folks. If we don't, we'll be left with only amazon and Walmart. Every city needs a store like Zia's. Although they're Tempe-owned, they certainly have a nice presence in Tucson and, personally, I like this Speedway location better than even their main one on University in Tempe. The staff are better, they have a better selection and the store is just more comfortable. This is not a record store, as in vinyl. Their vinyl selection is way at the back of the store and is not very large, to say the least. If you want vinyl, go to Toxic Ranch. Zia's is mostly CDs and DVDs. I've been able to get some great CDs here, both new and used. It always surprises me what they have used and what they have in their inventory. Relatively obsucre independent artists abound, and they have a good locals section. Used CDs run $5-9. They have sales on new releases that put them at around $10 for new copies, which is a fantastic deal and puts them even below most of the digital download sites. Staff are helpful, even for the people who come in looking for Mariah Carey and can't be bothered to check "C" instead of "M". I feel for the staff here a lot of times because of some of the dicks they get in here. They can order stuff that they don't have and, sometimes, will even do so unsolicited. I once asked about a band I like, National Skyline, but they didn't have it and offered to order it. I declined but, when I went back a couple of weeks later, two copies were on the shelf. They're open until 11 nightly, and the later evenings are usually populated by high school kids looking for rap CDs. They keep to themselves though, and the music is actually turned down around that time, maybe to keep things quiet. The location on Oracle is much more rap-oriented. But they usually are playing music. It's anything and everything from Radiohead to death metal to hip-hop to glam. Some of it gets annoying sometimes. They also do sell used DVDs and have quite a few, in addition to the already large collection of new DVDs. I've always thought that the meth problem in Tucson directly contributed to the large number of used CDs and DVDs available here. Not only tweakers selling their music and movies for quick cash, but also stealing them. I like Zia's better than Bookman's because the selection at Bookman's is very unpredictable. It's a lot of pop garbage, but there's always some gem in there that you have to work for. Bookman's is also crawling with obnoxious kids that have been brought there by parents who treat it as a defacto daycare, while the little bastards run around and smear the CDs with their just-out-of-nose fingers. read more

Zia is pretty much the southwest's equivalent of California's Amoeba Records and Rasputin Music in Northern California. Wanted to stop by to check out their vinyl selection and found sealed copies of Alkaline Trio's "Damnesia" and Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" running for just under 20 bucks each...which is a bit pricy but not by much. Used vinyl selection is pretty limited, unless you're looking for older vinyl. The vinyl selection (both new and used) is much more extensive at the W. Thunderbird location in Phoenix, but this location has an extensive CD and DVD selection that can't be poo-poo'd either. 4 stars for being a regional chain that not only caters to the mainstream, but to the independent scene as well. Oh, and to reply to Trace N's review about the payout for selling CDs...your situation is quite normal. The same is done with chains like Amoeba and Rasputin...cd's you likely spent 15-20 bucks on are only bought back for 25 cents to a buck. It's because cd's are mass produced, whereas if you had a collectors edition of "Dark Side" on vinyl...you would likely get 5-15 bucks for it. Not necessarily Zia's fault, just the nature of the second hand CD market. read more

I love Zia so much! I discovered the Zia chain back in high school. One of my teachers recommended it to me so I could buy some records. The prices of used vinyls here are fantastic! Plus, they have such great variety and it's organized by genre and alphabetically: super helpful to sort through the myriad of music. To make it even better, Zia teams up with the Loft to bring great movies. I won a free pair of tickets to see The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour. BEST THING EVER! Well, the movie actually was a bit beyond me. I'd only ever seen Yellow Submarine before (like five times at least), and Well MMT was just plot-less though very artistic. Totally deviating here (shouldn't be reviewing the movie), but the point is, I love the fact that Zia supports this fantastic way of share music on vinyls and supports the arts in general! read more

I stopped by here to sell some films on my way out of Tucson and was offered less than $1 a piece for Coen Brothers, David Lynch, Criterion films, a Box set of The Office (UK) and dozens of other foreign and art house films mostly in excellent to great condition. The guy at the counter told me when I asked why such a low offer, that they couldn't pay that much for films they have 5 or 6 copies of already. I asked which films they had that many copies and he told me he could take another hour and a half to look up the titles. I didn't even see doubles of most of the 87 films I brought in and didn't want to argue so I left. I don't live in Tucson but even if I did would never go back to sell anything. Selection-wise they have a decent quantity of nice films but most are over priced. Same with the cd's. If you are looking for a generic used store, this place is pretty good but if you are looking for specific titles, good luck. There were a little less than ten albums I was looking for and no one working there had ever heard of them. So F- on the punk selection and knowledge. I will definitely be going somewhere next time I'm in Tucson for music and if I feel like trading in 87 films for three or four films I may return. read more

What a neat little store this is. Zia is the go-to place when I need to get gifts for my brother, who is a huge music nerd (I like to think he gets it from me). I love their vinyl section and love that they carry new stuff and not just old. New vinyl comes with digital downloads so you don't compromise your itunes collection when you want a record. Their selection is amazing. I wanted to give my little brother a record of a rather obscure and now broken-up band (Neutral Milk Hotel) and Zia miraculously happened to have it. Hipsters rejoice! As has been said before, Zia also carries a lot of cute and gag gifts, a la Spencer. Not many places where you can get a Spam-like tin of Unicorn meat. I really like Zia's website as well. This ZIA has the best selection of music in comparison to the Oracle one. Really great titles. Lots of them used, which I like because I am a penny pinching kinda person. I love coming here, it is warming and comforting and fun to browse. I could and do spend an hour or so here just looking. There are many DVDs, though the Oracle location has the edge on DVDs selection. I can find so much here new and used. Rare albums, live, and from the kind of bands I enjoy-- Britpop, and jazz, and some obscure stuff to boot. I wind up having to find a lot of my artists online and paying a lot just because they never show up for sale in America, but ZIA has great odds on having them. The staff always welcomes me when I come in and offer to help. And there are neat items for sale up front, the kind of stuff you find at a "Spencers" with goofy gadgets, Superhero stuff, Twilight bandaids, marijuana flavored gum, that kind of thing. ZIA has trade-- you can get a card and trade in stuff and get things with it and build up points to get items discounted. They don't pay a great deal in cash for trades but eh it's nice if you just want to unload. Often they will take everything I bring in even if I just get a tiny bit for it, better than donating it I guess. And they'll also try to repair scratched CD's and DVDs for a fee. ZIA rocks. Head to ZIA, the Loft for a movie, shop at Whole Foods, and have a coffee at Ikes, and it's all within walking distance! read more

I like music stores and used CD stores get special attention from me. I also like the movie, "High Fidelity" because it shows what it's like to work in one of these places (Jack Black rocks in this film). After having a coffee at a nearby coffee house, I wandered over to Zia's. Now, back in the day when I was a student at the UofA, when this place opened, it was the bomb! Now? You can easily get all your music on-line, but nothing beats getting a bargain and for those people who still distrust the iTunes of the world then used CD stores are where it's at! Zia's just falls under "nice" in a side by side comparison to other used music places. I went in and bought a Greenday CD and was out the door in minutes. I did like talking to the guy behind the desk about the latest music commentary books they carry. The playlist: - Decent offering of used CDs (shelves and shelves) - DVDs - Music periodicals - Friendly and knowledgeable music store staff. My opinion? Music stores, even the used kind, are a dying breed. Do your best to keep them alive. Buy a used CD instead of downloading. read more

I still ove the local feel of this place. I still love the non-corporate exchange mentality. But after trading in many, many cd's, I have to say they really don't give me what I consider the fair value on my cd's. To put it into perspective, I bring in roughly 50 cd's, ranging from industrial, to pop, to punk, to reggae, to classical, to jazz (yeah, covering the gambit here), and am offered, on trade, roughly $25-$30. Even less, understandably, for cash. So my cd's are truly worth less than 50¢ each?! I tend to disagree and now make my exchanges at Bookman's. That, and the lack of some top-notch musicians in their aisles (really, no Two Gallants??) has knocked one of their shining stars out of orbit. read more
