Ommy did a wonderful job on my backyard landscaping. However, he said that I didn't need a building permit and now a friend told me that I likely did need one and I don't know what to do. But even if I didn't need one, a good friend of mine had Ommy build a retaining wall for her and told her that she didn't need a permit. Well, she did, and Ommy didn't help her. It all fell on her shoulders to have the wall he installed removed, get the permits (which required engineering work), and have it installed again. It was extremely stressful and costly for her. The thing is that Ommy is a very nice and creative person. But I have a bad taste in my mouth because of my friend's experience and now because I don't know if my lack of having a building permit will haunt me. The fear, uncertainty, and doubt already is. Following up to Danielle's comment... Danielle, Two things: 1) I was never aware that my water feature isn't "permanent", and that therefore, a permit wasn't required. Ommy told me verbally that a permit wasn't needed and I trusted him. Yes, I am responsible for the electrical. 2) About my friend's honesty: She is part of a very tight cohort of friends including me. I have known her well for almost ten years, and we heard the entire story (from her perspective, it's true) for the last year. I believe her. My suggestion to you is that in the future you explicitly state in your contract whether a building permit is necessary or not, and have the owner initial the clause. Avoid "he said, she said" arguments. That's what good contracts are for. read more

We contracted with Zenji in 2024 to do a large landscaping job. They were paid in full the day of completion on this 100+K landscaping job. We right away had a problem with the blue stone pavers as Zenji sealed the pavers with a product that failed turning white. I personally figured out how to remove the failed sealer but Zenji refused to warrantee the finish claiming we had altered the install. The lawn that was installed was dead within a month due to poor drainage. Zenji claimed we were responsible for drainage although we were never asked to provide drainage. Zenji is terrible to work with on warrantee items and takes an adversarial stance when asked to take care of problems. Do not work with this company. read more

His team always had a smile and we're willing to make even the smallest of adjustments through out the project. The office lady had the wrong address and wrong phone number.. she blamed it on yelp. The contractor guy came out and took measurements and asked us what we want. He seemed just fine. I like him well enough. He wanted us to make some choices on materials we want for retaining wall and fence. He said to see his website. The website showed random pictures but didn't really show any products or project categories. They sent me some pictures in email and I requested quotes on a couple of choices... time goes by... no quote... I emailed to ask if she was going to send a quote. She said she was working on it. She is the only person in the office and she's busy. A little rude... She'll get me the quote by the end of the week. I said okay and thank you... that was on Nov 18.... never got a quote. :(. Big waste of the contractor's and our time. Frustrating... we really need a fence. read more

Full Stop. *** Please take a look at the pictures I've attached to show just how incredible the transformations this team can create. This team completely renovated our backyard. It started by replacing the decking on all 3 levels with new PVC decking. Next they replace the rails with new, modern wire railing. Next they added artificial doggie turf and then added beautiful stonework to replace old pavers. When I asked if they could add a pond feature, they literally built the most beautiful pond in less than 24 hours! No exaggeration. Less than 24 hours. I am an architect and have been working in the construction industry for over 20 years - Zenji Landscape Construction is by far one of the best subs I have worked with. I hired them to build a raised stone patio, arbor, and to landscape my yard which included some grading. I was initially struck with the "can do" attitude from Zenji. After interviewing three other landscapers that told me what I wanted to do could not be done, Zenji said "no problem" and moved my 2,500lb boulder and shed. They were very helpful in working with me on options to reduce the budget while still maintaining the integrity of the design. We have used Zenji several times over the last couple of years. The first time was after our lawn was totally destroyed when we were forced to hook up to city sewer. I called several landscapers out for bids. A couple of them came and talked with me, took measurements, and never followed through with an estimate. I liked Ommy, the owner of Zenji, immediately. He had a vision for what our lawn could be and how we could accomplish that in phases. Phase one was installing irrigation, landscape lighting, replacing a retaining wall, removing what was left of the original lawn, leveling the back yard, hydroseeding, and installing two flower beds with rock border. We were extremely pleased with the work and Ommy came by a few times after he completed the job to make sure everything was going well with the new lawn. I still call them from time to time to add on to our lighting or to complete another part of the lawn. Ommy's wife Danielle keeps the books and does a good job communicating with us about the status of projects. They are not the least expensive lawn contractor but I believe they are one of the best. read more
