Falling for the Caveman was easy; dealing with the fallout was decidedly not. In the first six…read moremonths of our relationship, I was swept off my feet by this hopeless romantic - so very un-Ice Queen of me. Little did I know that in Caveman's wake would appear a righteous maelstrom: a woman scorned... There was drama, trauma, vandalism, police reports and restraining orders in my event horizon... I just couldn't see the storm, on account of all the rainbows. Caveman and I could not have grown up in more dissimilar households. His parents were both raging alcoholics; death threats at the Thanksgiving Dinner table were not uncommon, nor were they insincere. To this day, I have never heard either of my WASPy, Martinelli's Cider-drinking, Republican parents raise their voices to each other... much less even *argue*. Naturally, I am a great fomenter, who relishes pure, uncensored confrontation, in the name of honesty. Caveman is a pleaser; his modus operandi is to calm the waters, preferring to suffer in silence, rather than upset anyone. When I run out of Sound and Fury, I am deathly still and reserved - stoically resigned to whatever hard-edged truths I've spoken. Caveman rants and throws furniture; the geyser of suppressed feelings erupts, giving him - what is oft referred to on the exalted Howard Stern show as- "retard strength". For all of the other ways that we were good together, conflict resolution was our Dysfunction Junction; we would have been utterly defeated and never survived the tsunami of muck, had we not humbled ourselves and spent time with Dr. Deborah Barrett at the Zen Center of Orange County. The building is so much more than a calm and tranquil refuge for weary souls; it is home to a growing community of Zen practitioners and artists who wish to touch that elusive plane such as can be achieved through the art of ikebana and tea ceremony. Dr. Barrett bridges the Eastern and Western practice of meditation and philosophy with empathy and compassion. As a certified pastoral counselor with a Ph.D. in psychology, a M.A. in theology AND a law degree (Juris Doctor) from DePaul University, her observations are intellectually sound, emotionally relevant and fair. She wields an eloquent trident of perspectives with a rare economy of words. Caveman and I made more progress in a half-dozen consultations with Dr. Barrett than we could have in a lifetime of fumbling along by ourselves. The benefits of our time with Dr. Barrett continues to manifest in our marriage: when conflict arises (we are still, afterall, newlyweds) we are good to each other. We hold hands as we speak to each other. I no longer threaten to shoot Caveman in the kneecap, should he reach for a chair or ottoman to hurl into the courtyard. I don't buy into new-agey, healing crystal lore, self-help books or pharmaceutical solutions for the masses. Dr. Barrett and the Zen Center put forth the very best incarnation of Zen Meditation that I've ever encountered, and am so fortunate to have experienced in a compressed but extremely critical stage of my life with Caveman. That said, I know that Caveman and I will be married for a long, happy time. The manner in which we can more effectively communicate and the dutiful application of trigger locks have laid a solid foundation upon which to build our marriage (it is, afterall: until death do us part). Serenity now!

I booked a private lesson with Kyle Lam to learn more about Sound Healing, and it exceeded my…read moreexpectations. Kyle is a gifted teacher who combines deep knowledge with patience and genuine kindness. One of my favorite parts of the session was learning about the beautiful German planetary gongs and experiencing the unique sound and energy of each one. The lesson felt both educational and immersive, giving me a new appreciation for the art and science of Sound Healing. I brought my own sinking bowls, which I had never played. Kyle showed me how to identify their notes, play them effectively on their own and together, and understand how different sounds can complement one another. He also introduced me to various gong, mallets and techniques, explaining how posture, placement, and striking methods affect the sound. What stood out to me most was Kyle's ability to meet me where I was and create a supportive learning environment. I love feeling empowered, inspired, and excited to continue practicing what I learned. I can't wait for our next session, level two! I highly recommend a private session with Kyle for anyone curious about Sound Healing, singing bowls, or gongs. It was a wonderful investment in both learning and personal growth.

However, during the first half of the session, there was a helicopter and a drone hovering nearby, which made it a little difficult to fully focus and relax. I personally prefer indoor sessions for a more immersive and peaceful experience. I really can't really complain since it was an outdoor setting and some outside noise is to be expected so just a heads up if you plan to have an experience with background noise. Lastly, the headphones were not the same experience compared to listening to the sound frequency with the naked ear. Overall, thank you for the experience, it wasn't too bad! P.S. your sound guy was so kind. Every time I had issues with my headphone he was there to help!

I found this spot, and wow, it did not disappoint! Jesse led the all-levels class and did an amazing job guiding us through Vinyasa stretches. The downstairs room was such a vibe--with trees right outside the window, we transitioned from sunset to nightfall. The soft mood lighting added to the calm, relaxing atmosphere. Jesse started us off with deep breathing before moving into more challenging stretches, holding each one just long enough to feel the burn. By the time we wound down, I was so spent--between the body heat in the room and the workout itself, I was done. The session ended with us on our backs, taking deep breaths, and for the first time, I felt like I truly let go. I closed my eyes, relaxed completely, and even drifted into a little nap before snapping back to reality, realizing I was still in class. When I got up, I felt like Jesse had turned my stiff, tin-man body into a soft, loose rag doll. Such an incredible experience--I can't wait to go back!
