Place has great potential but sadly when I went service was so slow it dampened the whole experience. Went on a most beautiful sunny but freezing cold late Winter Sunday. Right at noon, people started filling up Point Ruston, lining up especially for a pop up donut vendor and the taco place next door to Zaya. Zaya has a beautiful selection of Eastern and Western pastries on display: normal and giant sized macarons, honey cake, eclairs, walnut caramel cookies, cream filled horns, cannoli, sweet breads, muffins, cookies, and more. The price is average, not too cheap like a mass market bakery but not too expensive like a bougie French patisserie. They also serve handcrafted coffee and tea drinks and hot lunch foods like crepes, borscht, and of course pirsoshky. I ordered a chicken pirsoshky (about $6), a cup of borscht (vegetarian, about $4-5), a walnut cookie, and a cream filled horn. They have some bar height tables right in front of the counter but also some normal tables just across the walkway. As I waited, the 2 young ladies working were so busy preparing food or drink that they totally ignored people waiting in line. That was unfortunate because it means lost customers and revenue that day. Seems like they need more training or more support to handle the crowd (though it really didn't seem that busy). I think it took 15 mins to get my pirsoshky gen another 15 to get my borscht. I'm surprised because I thought these were already prepared and could just be warmed up. The guys that went before me waited just as long as I did. Thankfully all of us waiting didn't make a fuss but if someone was in a hurry this would be very frustrating. The pirsoshky was tasty. Wish it had a bit more filling but overall I liked the browning and flavor. It got dry quickly though. My borscht was piping hot and very tasty. It was served with wheat peasant bread slices and sour cream, which was a nice surprise. The soup was so good I want to try and recreate this at home. The pastries were overall good but the cream horn left something to be desired... Maybe I'm just desiring another one to feel satisfied haha. I would go back to try more things but they need to improve the service. read more

I saw many reviews mentioned they have slow service, which I agreed but there was only one person working there meanwhile there's a lot of people in the line. She was definitely working so hard to get all of our others in, cook food, and make drinks. So she is definitely a hard worker, also she was super nice and friendly to us even when she's super busy. My husband and I think it's worth to wait a bit and enjoy the sun. If you are in hurry then definitely not a good idea to come here cuz you might have to wait a bit. We randomly walked by this place and thought maybe we should get coffee. Then we saw they have pierogi; so we decided to stay and have dinner here. I got garlic potatoes and he got chicken pierogi. Mine was perfect! The garlicky flavor and potatoes, with sour cream. The chicken one is juicy but there were slightly too much salt sprinkled on the pierogi. So it got a little bit too salty. We also got two dessert and they were amazing! The mocha I got was okay, not really my favorite. I like that you can sit outside, and she said she will wave at us when the food is ready to pick up, I just wish they can open the windows so it will be so much easier to get the food. read more

Super cute! This spot is inside the Waterfront Market. Tons of cute shops. We had lunch after a long run and decided to come here after to enjoy some coffee and a treat. Customer service was good and the menu options are all very yummy. I was shocked to see the prices of the coffee and treats. This place is very reasonable compared to other coffee shops in the area. My latte was made just right and my cannoli was delicious. The cafe has plenty of tables to sit and hang out. The cafe is super clean and organized. I recommend parking at the Waterfront Market grabbing a coffee here and going for a walk. Super cute date night or first date spot. Lots of cute shops close by as well. A must try. As first timers to this public market I was really looking forward to choosing a delicious treat to try and unfortunately Zaya did not deliver. The service was definitely lacking. Maybe they were understaffed? Not too sure. We almost left because no one i saw acknowledged us. I really wanted to give the macaroons a try so we waited about 6 minutes and we we're finally able to order. I was so disappointed when I bit into my Nutella macaroon...crunchy and hard. My little one tried the mint chocolate and it was good! We probably will try somewhere else next time. read more

QUALITY!!! That is the best word to describe this Cafe. This is no run of the mill "eh, it's ok, that will do" kinda cafe. This place exceeds all expectations. The Ukrainian staff that run this cafe are giving so much to the community with this cafe - from their complex pastries, to crepes to beautifully executed avocado toasts... you'd think all of these items would be in a high end restaurant. Staff is always so kind, patient and you can see they put in so much effort into everything on the menu. They're very thoughtful too... for instance, when you order a avocado toast, they are so generous with the amount of fresh toppings, they know you will need another slice of bread with the amount that will fall off eating your first toast.... So they give you two pieces. I also regularly purchase their coffee beans which are micro roasted in Tacoma. I'm pretty sensitive to coffees but this one works for me well. Love the smell and taste! I really couldn't give this place less that 5 stars... so happy to have such a place to go to regularly on Ruston! read more

I am only reviewing in regards to their pierogies, nothing else. I haven't tried any of their other stuff and just found myself in the area needing a snack when their pierogies called my name. They were warm, beautifully fresh tasting, and came with some tangy, thick sour cream. The only thing that wasn't my favourite was the bed of spinach it came on. This felt unnecessary and didn't add anything to the dish. Otherwise I would highly recommend ordering some. Lots of seating nearby and easy parking. read more

Their food menu is a little limited, however, I was excited to find a place that had pirogies. I really enjoyed the pirogies they were nice and chewy with a good garlic flavor. My friend got the avocado toast which felt like a good amount of food for the price and enjoyed it as well. I also tried the coffee cake and coffee which I enjoyed personally, but honestly feel like to me both are kind of hard to do wrong. However, I will say the coffee cake slice was pretty large and easily could be split which I always enjoy when the amount you get is justifiable for the price. My friend also tried the snickerdoodle cookie which was similar experience to the coffee cake. Seating is slightly minimal as it is in the market so it's a slightly better option to take something to go. When we went it was earlier so the whole market wasn't open yet and we didn't have a problem sitting down at a little table. Tried the chicken crepe, potato piroshki and chicken piroshki. The crepe was ok but not going to get it ever again. I asked before ordering what's in it and she didn't mention they cover it in balsamic vinegar and large crushed salt. Would have been nice to know so I would have picked something else. Zaya is located in the Point Ruston Waterfront Public Market. A relatively new vendor since I was here last (I don't come here often. The neighborhood has complicated parking and if I'm not going to see a movie or take a summertime walk while admiring Puget Sound I don't see much point coming to this neighborhood often). It seems to be a popular place and with good reason as it's the only coffee shop at the market. Coffee and tea drinks are pretty decent actually. I liked my spiced tea quite a bit. Service could be worked on. The young blonde lady making the drinks didn't need to be so annoyed with a very general question I had about the place. So a career challenge for her... when you work in a building where tourists and looklee loos go be prepared to answer "stupid questions ". It's perfectly fine to be "dying inside" when you are answering these questions and perhaps we deserve to be mocked when we walk away, rapidly becoming distant memories for all parties involved but until then your customers who aren't being unreasonable just "stupid" should still get service with a smile. read more

Zaya cafe is located in the Ruston Public Market. Paid parking in Point Ruston though you can get it validated and free parking is at Dune Park if you want a bit of a walk. My husband got us food at Zaya when they first opened so I knew it was good! Walk up ordering- There was one person ahead of me when I went to order (he got a drink) and I ordered 2 piroshkys and a hot cocoa. I tried to ask for an estimate for how long the food would take but no response to my question. Several people ordered after and a number of them got their orders and drinks before me. I finally walked up for my drink and they started making it. I waited about 30 minutes, and then tried to get a refund for the piroshkys. I could see the confusion in the cashiers face since she didn't know the status of my order or what to do. Someone came out and said it would just be a few more minutes but at that point i really just needed to go and get my baby to nap time. I just left without my food or money back. Really disappointed since I don't get to go out and about much these days and just the lack of service. I wouldn't have been as upset but I was standing right at the pickup window and no one gave me an update and by the time I was still waiting it was just me there (since the other people had received their orders and left). Can't recommend even though I know the food is good, unless you're willing to wait. Or if you get something that's just already ready in the baked sweets window. So I really loved the atmosphere here it's a Ukrainian Cafe which I want to support!! The desserts looked ins ally decadent, everything is very clean and perfect. We ordered a cheese piroshki which sounded amazing since I love piroshkis! The women let us know it would be about a 5 minute wait for both . So we ordered a delicious vanilla caramel latte and waited at the tables . She said they were ready and my husband raced over since he hasn't had a piroshki since he was home and he was heartbroken. This pastry was frozen on the inside his face is pictured since I wanted to capture a good moment not a horrible one . We asked her if it's supposed to be cold she said she was sorry and took it to the back she asked us to Please wait and of course we did since a little heat up would make this pastry taste great, we got them back and once again still cold and gross on the inside . We wanted a snack since we were shopping with my Mom, husband and new born but this was not the spot . We just threw them away . First impression was the barista finished with a transaction before us then proceeded to walk away and hide behind the counter to scroll her phone. We waited and then had to call her back to order. I ordered an Americano with hazelnut syrup. She charged me for it but then forgot to add it in. So I had to come back and ask for it. Then it wasn't stirred in so i still tasted no syrup and I got all syrup my last sip. Would not recommend. I guess the advantage of the shop is it being the first coffee stand at the door of the Ruston market so it can get good volume of customers, but service and quality wise, I wouldn't put it pass second time visit. read more
