Went here on the recommendation of my replacement hairdresser (normal gal is on maternity leave). Close to the house (under 10 miles), great guacamole, chips, salsa ok, looking for something hotter. Had the Zarape Fajitas (good to great), partner had the trio. Good. I normally try fish tacos, but after finding most places have tilapia in them, I just don't do it any more (sorry fish tacos). They also had a salmon version I might try. Service was awesome. Have Pacifico on tap (rare). Make michelada's (yum). Food came out promptly. What was supposed to be chilled was chilled (beer mugs, margarita glass). What was supposed to be hot,was hot......my mother would have been proud about this! Will definitely return. My husband and I were in the mood for Mexican, but I was looking for a place that offered authentic, fresh offerings. After some quick research on Yelp, we decided to try Zarape and were so glad we did. Although it was about 30 minutes from our home, it was well worth the drive. I had the chicken flautas and he had the shrimp rancheroes. We waited for our entrees munching on delicious chips and salsa and great margaritas (pomegranate and the house). I love guacamole and couldn't resist our waitress' recommendation of the guac and chips apps. Our entrees came out at a decent interval from the drinks and apps and were piping hot, which I like. When Zarape first opened, we loved it. It's a short walk from our house, so it was our go-to. But over the years, the food got bland and lost its flavor. I suspect someone told the kitchen that gringos don't like spicy food. When they really meant they can't take hot, picante food. So instead of toning down only the chilis, they toned down ALL the flavors. Too bad. Now we drive across town to Lalo where we can taste the cumin, oregano and epazote. read more

This place was pretty good. I don't come out to Marlborough often anymore, so I tend to rely on yelp or friends when eating somewhere in the area. A friend of ours recommended this place. It seems to sit in a semi-residential area. We sat outside on the patio because it was a beautiful day. We were seated right away and were able to order drinks and look at the menu. Both of us ordered margaritas and they were both delicious. The wait staff was attentive and took our food order soon after. I don't think they even had anyone being waited on inside, everyone was on the patio. I ordered the tamales and my SO ordered the fajitas. The food didn't take long and it came out hot and delicious. The fajitas did only come with three corn tortillas so my SO had to order more to finish the rest of his plate. My plate of food was excellent. The price point I felt, was average for the amount of food. I agree with a prior reviewer that it was weird they charged $2.50 for another bowl of chips and salsa. Everything else was great though. Service was efficient, food was good and the patio was a great place to enjoy it all. I live in Marlborough and love Zarape! Fun and inexpensive dining spot with an authentic Mexican atmosphere. Patio dining available too. Staff is courteous, quick and knowledgeable about the menu. Chips and salsa served right away on the house. The marguerita I had was very tasty and they have a large marguerita menu. Lots of authentic dishes and combinations to choose from and even a burger menu for those wanting non Mexican food. Portions are generous. I have always enjoyed Zarape. The food is good and the staff is friendly. But today was disappointing. I tried to call in a take-out order. The person that answered the phone spoke so little English that it took several tries for her to understand that I wanted a burrito. Or so I thought. Came here for lunch... was a little empty.. but the decor is fun for what it is.. Waitress was nice and attentive enough. Food was great, I had the quesadillas. The rice was a little overcooked... but it tasted good. The quesadilla was great.... crispy on the outside... warm gooey cheesy chicken on the inside. Went there with my daughter on a Tuesday around 6:30 at night. The restaurant was packed and we had to wait to be seated. There wasn't too many places to wait for a table, you either had to wait on the 2 chairs in the front or outside in the cold. When we finally got seated we order our food. My daughter and I both had beef tacos. The tacos had thick beef and not ground meat for the tacos and the meat was kind of chewy. They gave us complimentary chips and hot sauce. The sauce was very bland and the chips were hard and stale. I was born and raised in Texas and this isn't the type of Mexican food you would see down south. This is our favorite mexican restaurant of all times. The food is awesome, as it does not taste like the industrialized food you get at franchise restaurants. The experience is similar to eating food made by your grandmother. The staff is also very kind and always welcoming. They are located in the center of marlboro but on a very quiet street. The place looks small from outside then it actually is. Their drinks are the best also. We love going there because of how great they are and we also live near by. Summary: food was just okay but Jalisco margarita was scrumptious. I ordered the chimichanga with shrimp; the shrimp was overcooked and the chimi got a little too much love from the broiler (read: burnt). Good news? I asked for a side of jalapeños and they brought me three large, blistered peppers. Sure it cost $1 but MAN were those tasty. You often see blistered shoshitos but this was the first time I'd seen jalapeños served that way. Yummmm. All in all, aside from the peppers, the food was really pretty bland. Not sure why the ratings are so high on this place. I am very picky with my margaritas and yes they definitely use a sour mix you can buy off the shelf, not an authentic fresh blend of juices. My boyfriend and I each got the chimichanga and it was decent, not as big as I've gotten at other Mexican restaurants but it filled us up. The prices aren't awful for a sit down Mexican restaurant. I believe a chimichanga was $11.99. The chips and salsa was good, but you hafta pay for refills which is a downfall. For the price they charge for the food and the drinks they can surely afford refills on the chips and salsa. I probably won't be back because I wasn't a fan of the syrupy $9 margarita and I like free refills on my chips and salsa! read more

Chicken fajita was more vegetables then chicken. Can't even say that it had chicken strips it was more like shaved scrapings from the bottom of the pan. The pork tacos lacked flavor and barely had meat to fill the shell. The salsa was flavorless and almost seemed watered down. I could write a short story going into detail on every dish and so on but I'll spare you. If you want REALLY good Mexican than go to Casa Vallarta in Northborough. I literally stumbled upon this place. Coming from a SoCal trip, been craving proper Mexican fare and this place hit the spot! Ordered to-go, fast friendly service. Beautiful interior. Had the carne asada and a glass of horchata....YUM. The rice and beans were pretty good too. Just a spoonful of guacamole came with my meal, but I will be back for more, very tasty!
