I pinged several jewellers and Diamond Emporium wasn't the first to get back to me, but by far the most attentive. I tried GS Diamonds, Larsen Jewellery, and Royal Diamonds and decided to go with Diamond Emporium. I was aided by Shelley and she was absolutely wonderful. I gave her the specifications of what I was looking for and my budget and she came back straight away with recommendations. While the diamonds weren't in the store, they had similar ones for me to look at so I popped straight in. While there she answered every question I had and everything was done with ease and seamlessly. Once I decided on a diamond and setting, I put a deposit down and she told me it would take up to 10 working days to come in. It ended up taking about 5; talk about delivering! I came in and had a look, and the diamond was just as expected, beautiful. Shelley checked up frequently to make sure things were going well, and I proposed on Jan 26th. Thanks in part to the great diamond, I am now engaged. While the ring fit initially, it loosened up a bit and we came back in for a resizing that was also seamless and done with ease at no extra cost.

When the rings were ready, we went to the Queen Victoria Building excited but a little nervous because the design and engravings were highly intricate and would have required considerable skill to fashion. I had a Thursday afternoon to shop and did a quick Yelp search to find the right jeweler, so I wouldn't be flying blind in a city I had only been to once before. I found both Varoujan and Australian Diamond Brokers and am so thrilled I did. I immediately felt comfortable with everyone I met and never felt like I was being sold to at any point. Most importantly, their pieces were stunning. I mean, truly, truly stunning. The first pendant I was presented was beyond incredible, which also meant it was larger than I wanted and a bit more pricey. Immediately after, I was presented with an oval shaped blue opal surrounded by diamonds that was instantly the one! After they worked with me on price, and offered to turn around a new chain within a day, I was sold and over the moon. Now, just one day later and with said pendant happily dangling from my neck, I am an ecstatic customer. The extra bonus is I showed Varoujan a ring I wear that I've never really loved. (Family diamond that I DO love in a setting that doesn't do it justice.) I asked his advice for what he'd do to highlight the diamond and within minutes he had drawn a beautiful design that I'm in love with. I am incredibly thankful for that extra help and advice. The nasty high-pressure sales person at Opal Cutters told us that we'd never find what we were looking for. Well, Spectrum Gems had exactly what my wife was looking for - in fact they had 5 or 6 rings for her to chose from! Earlier in our trip we had bought my wife a beautiful bolder opal necklace so we were looking for something in the lower price range but still nice. This is a very nice store with no pressure to buy and beautiful pieces in a wide variety of price ranges. Next time we go back to Sydney, we'll definitely be back to buy more here. The advantages of going to a manufacturing jeweller are numerous: you can get something designed and therefore unique; it's hand-crafted; the quality of the metals, stones and craftsmanship is superior; you don't pay mark-ups and you can build a life-time relationship with the jeweller (rather than a store assistant that may not be there when you need something next time). And these jewellers can remodel old jewellery as well. Some people shy away from manufacturing jewellers because they believe they can be too expensive. In the world of jewellery you don't always get what you pay for so why not spend an extra couple of $100s to get the better stone, setting and metal than paying for a cheap mass produced piece? Believe me - she will know the difference! But that's not saying that if you are on a budget the jeweller will refuse to work with you - they will. Another advantage is that you will almost always get internationally recognised certificates for any precious stones (for insurance or re-sell purposes) from a manufacturing jeweller. Ken Anania of Anania is a reputable manufacturer and design jeweller and acknowledged as one of Sydney's best. He ticks all of the above boxes and the business has been going since 1965 when his father started it when he specialised in opal. Guys like Ken are in business for a long time because of reputation (and he has been in the business since he joined his father in 1978), because they have a clientele that not only go back but refer others to him. Engagement ring - no worries - select the stone and the style and if you can't pay upfront just give him a deposit and the ring will be kept in his safe until the big proposal. New jewellery doesn't also need to be an option. Ken can remodel jewellery by using the stones and metals in the old to handcraft something new. Stuck for inspiration? Ken also has jewellery already made and for sale in his showroom and it is beautiful (it sometimes features in Vogue magazine). You don't need an appointment but of course if you need Ken's opinion and need to work on a design with him then setting a time after the first consult is of course advisable. I can't recommend Ken more highly for handcrafted jewellery and expertise.

When I went to collect the finished piece and he told me the price I thought I'd misheard it was so cheap. He cleaned my rings, a necklace and a pair of earrings as well, and did it for free! I thought this was unacceptable since it took him about 45mins so I had to force money into his hand and run out of the store. A rare gem in the sharky world of jewellers.

Upon entering the shop area, I was taken aback by just how delicate and beautiful all of the items were. So cute, so precious. All of the glittering treasures distracted me for quite a while. I couldn't help but look at every item on display. I knew instantly that I would find what I had in mind. I was searching for something simple and classic yet not quite the norm. There was no question that I'd end up with an emerald (considering that my last name will soon be 'Green'), but just a matter of whether or not there would be a jeweler that had decent emerald rings with yellow gold bands rather than silver. More often than not, if a location did have rings that met those standards, the rings seemed somewhat cheap-looking. Stone too big, setting too strange, dull gold, etc. To top it off, I have large knuckles and rather bony fingers to consider, making ring sizing a major issue. Not only did Claudia give me an accurate ring sizing, she let me try on the ring that caught my eye, along with one of the plain gold wedding bands on display to mimic how my wedding band would fit beside it (we had ordered our wedding rings but they wouldn't arrive until later in the month). She gave me her honest opinions and was incredibly patient, explaining the processes of care plans and resizing within the business, as the ring only came in larger sizes and would have to be made from scratch to fit my finger. I was given a strikingly accurate wait time for when my specially made ring would arrive, and only just picked it up. It was late evening when we left the shop, and the setting sun provided a stunning warm light which made the emerald glow nicely. I shall definitely be returning for more jewelry in the future!
