It's always daunting when you move to a new area, trying to work out which takeaways and…read morerestaurants are worth a visit, so I was delighted to find Palace Spice on the second attempt at ordering a curry in Crystal Palace. The food isn't at all greasy like you can sometimes find with Indian food, and from my experience that portions are very generous with a lot of meat in the meat dishes. We tend to order a mixture of dishes and sides so that everyone can share and experience as many different flavours as possible. That being said, we seem to have settled on a few set dishes now: The Chicken Manchurian, a very sweet mango chicken and prawn rice, saag aloo, with a garlic naan. If you put that order in, they'd be surprised it wasn't me ordering. As for the staff, they are incredibly friendly, always greeting me with a handshake and a smile. They remember me and what I've been up to, although thinking about it, that probably is a sign that I eat there too much! So to summarize, the food is sublime, the service is excellent and I would thoughly recommend it to anyone.

The surroundings are perfectly pleasant and relaxing, and the staff are very nice and happy to help. Most importantly, food was great. I felt obliged to try the momo dumplings as starters, so to sample the Nepalese cuisine properly. These were delicious and I'm glad I eschewed the usual poppadoms and left some room! For mains I tried a lamb curry with 5 different beans, one of their signature dishes, highly recommended. This was not only very tasty, it was also notably free of excess oil. The same was true of the Bindi Bhaji side (a dish I see as a true curry-house barometer). I only fancied one glass of red wine, where the house bottle is your only option, but this was more than drinkable. You end up paying a little more per head than other places but this is worth it as you're receiving a quality a cut above many other South Asian restaurants & the menu has been created with effort, most dishes being regional or at least regionally inspired (to the best of my knowledge). Highly recommended!

There's no point ordering a bog standard curry when there's Ghurka Chicken and Masu Batuwa to be had. The only bad thing about this place is the decor. I can deal with old-fashioned - old fashioned curry houses have their own peculiar charm - but the interior feels a bit grotty and strangely unfinished as well. Other than that, this is a really excellent curry house that will leave you feeling all happy inside.

The menu is simple and good value for money, its a choice of roti or rice with a variety of fillings, chicken (obviously), pork, vegetable options as well as the falafel option. The staff have good recommendations, not only on the food but on the beers they sell. The service is prompt and courteous, as you'd expect. I had the chicken wrap and it had good flavour and combine with the portion of chips (which are big enough to share) gave me a good lining in the stomach to contend with the night ahead of me. I think they are available on Deliveroo so I will be having one when I'm not at Boxpark.

So I can't comment on the authenticity, but I can say that I really, really enjoyed it. The lunch box deal for a fiver drew me in - rice or a roti, a main and two sides. You can add toppings or go large, but actually even the regular is a lot of very tasty food (and I was very happy to have a hot lunch on a cold day). I had rice, with the chicken curry, braised chickpeas and the slaw. The curry was very good, it was a combination of shredded chicken and cubes of I think sweet potato. The chick peas were also in some sort of spicy sauce, and were excellent. I'm a sucker for chana masala and these reminded me a little of that. Even the slaw was good, and the difference in temperatures as well as the dressing helped cool down my mouth from the building spice. I have this feeling I'm going to be a regular customer here, as eating it was just a joy, and it comes in a container that was easily carried back to the office.
