Unfortunately, it was served only lukewarm instead of at the proper temperature, which took away from the overall experience. What stood out most, however, was the presentation of the restaurant. Upon entering, I was greeted by numerous handwritten paper signs and messages written on dry-erase boards throughout the dining area. For a restaurant with mid-range pricing, this came across as unprofessional and distracted from the dining experience. I was also surprised that there was no standard silverware available--only individually wrapped, inexpensive plastic forks and spoons. As I was leaving, I noticed several customers were being served their meals in takeout containers rather than on traditional plates, which further gave the impression of a casual takeout establishment rather than a dine-in restaurant. Overall, the friendly service and flavorful food were definite positives, but the food temperature and the overall presentation of the restaurant left me remembering why I rarely choose to dine at Red Pier. With a few improvements to presentation and attention to detail, the experience could better match the prices being charged.

After waiting over an hour for our drinks that we ordered before giving our food order even after our food had been served and we had finished eating our meal, I asked the waitress to cancel all of our drinks and shots. Her response was simply, "Perfect." As a business owner for more than 25 years, I know staffing challenges are real. But customer service and professionalism should never suffer because of them. I'm sure the owners would be disappointed to know they not only lost over $70 in beverage sales from our table alone, but also left a poor impression on guests who were visiting from out of town. However there was a sweet older white waitress in there whose name was Karen but definitely not a Karen, who was so attentive, caring and proactive. She's a keeper.

But I've also imagined it to be the next great Mexican restaurant in town, which I'm on a continual quest to find. I finally got the nerve to go in today, and I was worried for all the wrong reasons. Make no mistake, this IS a dicey part of town. There is a lot of, uh, colorful foot traffic. (El 7 Mares shares its building with a small corner store.) But 7 Mares is an oasis from the outside. The salsa was average at best, and the guacamole I ordered was subpar. The salsa reminded me of Los Picosos - not bad, but not my type. I can't verbalize the flavor, but I think it's a combination of sweet and tangy. And quite mild. The guacamole was really creamy, as if it had been mixed with sour cream. Again, edible, just "unnatural" and not very good. I haven't had the processed grocery store guacamole in many years, but this didn't seem too far from what I remember of that stuff. As far as the enchiladas, they were not a good example in my experience. The menu mentioned a tomatillo sauce (that's what defines the dish, right?), but I swear there was nothing but cheese on these. And a ton of it at that. The chicken was good - tender and well seasoned with peppers cooked in. But these weren't the enchiladas suizas I've grown to love. I'll keep going to Playitas when I'm craving those. I may end up giving 7 Mares another try, but there are a ton of proven restaurants in the vicinity - Macon and Summer to the southeast - that already have my loyalty. Things would have to improve dramatically for me to come back a third time.

The only two negatives were I was charged $11 for the burrito when the online price clearly says $10.00; and this restaurant put lettuce inside the burrito and when lettuce gets hot it has a slip to it that's not a good taste.
