Food: I got a crunch roll and a tonkotsu ramen, they were both OK. The roll was decent but did not give much flavor aside from the soy sauce and mayo mix that were already on the rolls. The tonkotsu ramen did not have the richness in flavor that I was expecting, the broth tasted like milk and was not flavorful to me. The chashu pork was the only redeeming quality in the ramen, the chashu was marinated well and had a really good texture. But the noodles were the most disappointing aspect of the entire dish, the noodles were clumped together and way too undercooked. Service: Service was great, even though the shop was very busy our waitress had a positive attitude and served us well. Vibe: The shop is busy and there were many people eating at the grill and the other tables. Decorations are random but still charming and the whole shop had a lot of energy. read more

The performance at the grill was the best part of the meal! Three of us (the minimum) chose the teppanyaki grill. The grilled chicken was a bit overdone, the veggies drowned in sauce, and the shrimp was not "scampy", but indeed skimpy. The rice tasted burnt. Two of us had sushi, just like we had several months ago. The fish was warm, and super small in relation to the size of the unimaginative rolls. Tons of sauce hid any taste of fish (maybe a good thing). To top it off, our grill chef fetched the (very late) sushi orders well after his performance was done, and the grill was cleaned up. He delivered the wrong order to us, and then seemed to blame us for the mix-up...by saying "that's why I told you which ones these were". Sorry dude, not in our language. He wanted to get his point across, so he told the sushi "chefs" about our mistake, and our over-extended waitress. All within ear-shot. If we could have reduced the mandatory 18% tip, we would have. Sat for more than 15 minutes after being seated and still didn't even get our drinks ordered. Ended up just walking out. Waitress even waited the table next to us and made eye contact with her and multiple other waitresses and still no one even came to our table. I've dined here several times. Most of the time it's decent. The service is hit and miss. The wait staff always has an attitude of what I would describe as "distracted professional". I've had a great server once in all of the times I've been here and a couple of awful ones. All the of the entrees, appetizers, and sushi I have gotten are better at other places. It's like they could make everything amazing but decided not to go the extra step. Fried rice is not very flavorful and full of sliced onions and shredded carrots. Mojitos are on the menu but I have never been when they have fresh mint. They automatically add the tip if you have 5 or more in your party. And they total the tip on taxed total, which, in my opinion should be illegal. Taxes are not a service provided to anyone. You shouldn't charge a tip on tax. Wednesday nights are half price on a lot of the sushi or 2 for $22 on the Yuimaru rolls, so that's the best night for sushi. I haven't tried the hibachi, maybe it's better than the regular menu ‍ Overall, it's decent but nothing special. read more

Every now and again we blunder in to a surprisingly good restaurant. Yuimaru is such a place and, if it hadn't been for the electro-crap music being played at a billion decibels, I would be happy to offer 5 stars. The service was good, though there wasn't a Japanese person to be seen and the NY student who serve us was very friendly and attentive but, it has to be said, he knew bugger all about jappo cuisine. Still, it is a very classy fitout and is a good space in which to eat. Between us, we had shrimp tempura udon, spicy pork bulgogi, fried rice and a caterpillar role. It was all very, very good. In particular, the bulgogi was absolutely sensational. This will be a regular place for us to visit when we are in Johnson City to check on our business. this is a really good restaurant. read more

To be fair to this place, I'll need to break this review into two parts. And I'll start with the positive one. Food: 5* The tonkatsu ramen was delicious. However this place prepares their shacha pork and marinated eggs... it's fantastic. $15 is a touch high, but this ramen is the main reason I'll be coming back. It was good enough to make up for the shortcomings of the next dish: The chirashi I ordered came out like... immediately after the starter soup and salad. Leads me to believe it is prepared in advance... c'mon. Chirashi is about what's fresh and good in the moment! Fish was okay, drowned in beet and carrot strings and fake 'krab' that should NEVER be in this dish. Not at all worth $20. Now, for the down side. Service: 2* When we arrived, we almost got to watch a whole teppanyaki show from the lobby before we were sat down. And after that, it was close to FORTY FIVE MINUTES before we even got drink orders. I blame the girl that seated us, and the two other servers who kept checking in on nearby tables and ignoring us sitting with no drinks, silverware, anything. Once our server (Katie) was aware we existed, things improved a bit. No comp was offered for the bad experience. Last words: I'll be back, and this place had better be thankful they make a really hecking good bowl of ramen. I was hoping this place would break the 'curse' of restaurants that have failed in this location since Stir Fry Cafe left, but things aren't looking promising. We were regular customers until Wednesday, my family of four were seated and our were taken relatively quick. Three of our party received their meals with in a reasonable amount of time one of the orders was running behind so we asked our server to check on it. Three meals were finished and one never arrived, our server stated rather smugly the he would be willing to take it off the check. My thoughts were wow, how incredibly generous. Went to the hostess stand and asked to speak to the manager who came out relatively fast. She was very condescending and laughed several times at their poor performance. My friends and I went to this restaurant about a week ago, and we all adored it. The food was great, and the staff was friendly. I got the tempura udon, which is the closest to authentic I've gotten in the Tri-Cities, period. It was delicious. We also got the gyoza, which came out slightly cold (hence only four stars) but otherwise were quite good. I wish the gyoza were not just steamed but also grilled and had a crispy bottom, but the wrappers were perfectly cooked and the filling was tasty!
