Service was a little disappointing. The server lacked some English and never checked on me. Appetizer took over 20 min to come out without any updates at all. Mind you there was just me and another person here eating at 2:45pm. I ordered the beef steam buns with no eal sauce for an appetizer and it was pretty good. I also had the filet hibachi and that was NOT GOOD to me at all. The beef was DEFINITELY not filet. And if it was it was a really shitty quality. The meat wasn't tender at all and I know what filet taste like. It also tasted funny. I think they are using a different cut of steak or it's just bad quality. The fried rice that it came with tasted barely anything like actual fried rice. It seems like they took a cup of white rice and through it into a pan for a few seconds and took it right back out. Yugen is easily one of the standout dining experiences in Rockford right now. From the moment we sat down, everything felt thoughtfully done from the ambiance to the service to the presentation of each dish. Every item we ordered was impressive. The golden tofu, chicken karaage, and special seaweed salad were all fresh, well seasoned, and a perfect start to the meal. The sushi was just as strong. The bonsai tree and BBQ eel roll were beautifully presented and tasted incredibly fresh with great balance in every bite. For entrees, the beef short ribs ramen and seafood ramen were rich, savory, and deeply satisfying without feeling too heavy. The hibachi 3 combo meats came out perfectly cooked with generous portions, making it a great value for the quality. The Rocky Mountain roll was another standout that we would absolutely order again. What really ties it all together is the consistency across the board. Great food, great service, and an atmosphere that works just as well for a date night as it does for dinner with friends or family. I took my wife to Yugen for her birthday. The experience was wonderful from the moment we walked in the door until we left. Our server Eva, was very attentive. She gave us great service! The food was phenomenal! I had the beef short rib ramen, and let me tell you. The short rib we very tender. The broth had a rich deep flavor. I came in with minimal expectations (how many restaurants claim they're "authentic" and end up being a letdown these days), and was pleasantly surprised. Ramen: came for their viral special beef rib ramen, which was disappointingly sold out. Ordered the Tonkatsu instead. Soup was creamy and flavorful, noodles were thin but had a good bite. Most impressive was the actual chashu that had a particularly smoky/grilled flavor. I have not seen other restaurants do that before and it worked amazingly. Chicken fried rice was very well seasoned despite the use of chicken breast. I usually have to add salt/soy sauce to fried rice but this one didn't need any modifications at all! Sushi: only had a few as sides. Eel nigiri was just ok, but the salmon maki seemed to use good quality fish and was PACKED (see photo, compared to other restos that skimp on the salmon) In short, I can't confirm if they're authentic or not, but what I can say is that everything I ordered was delicious.
