We…read morecame in to pick up a Desert Milkweed Seed Kit that were being given out today, Earth Day, at all Maricopa District libraries. The staff were so friendly and helpful here and my daughter also ended up getting her library card. It only took a few minutes. She chose a library card that has a scorpion on it that glows in the dark. Very cool. We enjoyed looking at all of the books, audiobooks, movies, and culture passes available. There's even an option to check out a ukulele at this branch! We checked out the Friends of the Library Bookstore attached to the library by a small hallway with restrooms, a relaxation room and a microfiche room. The bookstore is one of the nicest and most curated friends of the library bookstores I have seen. Everything is organized alphabetically and decorated and clean. Books are very affordable priced around $0.25 to $1.00. We were greeted by the friendliest staff helper when we walked in.

They hold interesting programs here so I went to learn about 3d printing. The librarian explained…read morethat because of the time consuming nature of the printer, all of the parts of our projects were made in advance so all we had to do was pick the colors of the various pieces, read the directions, and snap them together, but she had the machine going to we could see how it operates and we saw little orange spinners made. So what did we make? Fidgets. One black one like a mini joystick, an Oreo, and a clicking gear (all shown in my pics). She explained that they are fun for everyone, but that neurodivergent people like those with ADHD find them handy to help increase focus or for self soothing. She had books about neurodivergency lined up on the book cart so we could look through them and check them out if we wanted to. I wasn't expecting this extra educational aspect to what I thought was just seeing a 3d printer work, so it was a very well rounded program and all of us in this multi age group really enjoyed it.

Although I am not a resident of Surprise or Arizona for that matter, I was able to sign up for a free library card. I even got to choose my library card design that was created by residents in an annual contest. They have a variety of services here that you will find at other libraries across the country. You can check out physical books or download the Surprise Library app and find links to the Hoopla and Libby apps for free digital content downloads including movies, TV shows, podcasts, audiobooks, music, and more. They have laptops and WiFi devices available, but there seems to be a very long wait for these. People can check them out for a 3-week period. You can also use computers there at the facility. I loved seeing a group of friends playing games at a table. There was also a Seed Library for people wanting to grow their own plants. The Library of Things (LOTs) seems to be popular for kids to checkout toys. My favorite item was the cultural pass. They had available passes to a variety of museums and cultural establishments. You could checkout a pass and use it within a seven day period. I wanted to checkout the free pass to the Phoenix Art Museum. Unfortunately, this branch didn't have one available at the moment I came in, but the staff was kind enough to direct me to another branch that had it and they held it for me since they knew I was on my way. The pass was good for two free admissions to the art museum. This saved us over $50. What an amazing service offering! There are countless events on the calendar, especially for young families. It's definitely worth visiting your local branch to find entertainment and educational resources to enrich your life.

Amy was the friendly woman that helped me. First of all you need to know I have not had a library card for a lllooonnggg time. No reason just didn't have one. I have reached an age where buying books is just ridiculous. As soon as I read a book I donate or pass it on to a friend. I don't need a shelf of books. I also travel a lot and need to utilize ebooks more often. So back to Amy. She patiently told me how to access the local library when I'm in town and want an actual book but she also explained how to use Overdrive when I'm traveling to obtain ebooks. The library itself is small but well lit and just feels inviting. I know I will be using it for many years to come and am thankful it is here in El Mirage.

There is a nice, colorful area for tots and toddlers with books and computers just for them. That section is very well designed, I think; it reminds me of the seat in a bay window because of the way it is built. Even though there are many windows with a lot of sun coming in, it's still slightly claustrophobic because the windows are so cramped from top to bottom, with dark blinds to try to kill the glare, you can't really see outside in any direction. There is almost always a good selection of newly released DVDs in a wire rack on the librarians' desk. Of course, like all libraries, they have CDs and magazines as well. The staff is always great. There are few books in this location, maybe because it is so small. The bathrooms -- one toilet each -- are always kept nice. The parking lot is covered, and it's the best-guarded I have seen in such a small town -- due to the close proximity of the courthouse, there are cameras all over the place. It's ghetto fabulous!
