When I dropped my car off, the mechanic I spoke to quoted me 'approximately £200', and that if any additional work was required that they would phone me to discuss and approve. Later that day, I returned to collect my car. It had passed its MOT; a new cylinder and bearing had been fitted. The bill came to nearly double the quoted price - £376. I had had no discussions with the garage regarding any additional work or cost. The mechanic present was unable to negotiate the price and kept stating 'I thought the gaffer had rang you'. Eventually, he rang the owner, 'Ashley', who had done the work. He fully acknowledged that no discussion had taken place regarding additional work. It took a long and unpleasant discussion to reduce the price - initially Ashley had asked for £300 (in cash). In the end, I agreed to pay £250, but even then, I feel as though I have been taking advantage of. It is garages like this that give mechanics a bad name.

They offer accident repairs, resprays, general body repairs, MOTs, services and other mechanical repairs. They are reasonably priced too for the work that they do, you do need to book in advance though as they are often busy.

If you want to be 100% certain that your car has been honestly and correctly serviced then go to this garage. You will find that they will also give you good advice about your car when you have it serviced. I've been using this garage for about 5 years. All the staff are experienced proper mechanics (not just fitters like lots of places), have an amazing amount of knowledge about a very wide range of vehicles and are very helpful. Keith who owns the garage also has a very high reputation for repairing and renovating classic cars and fits LPG systems to cars, vans and motorhomes. They have looked after my LPG powered car very well. They are always very busy as they have such a good reputation and are totally honest. Because they always try to do their best for loyal customers and do an honest job, it means that sometimes they have urgent work that has to be done. All the staff are very down to earth and friendly and never talk down to you. If you are a woman, or if you know nothing about cars, you will be treated with respect and all the staff are very approachable. I very highly recommend this garage. I found them at random in the Yellow Pages, while looking for a local garage - they specialise in Volvos, and so having one myself, they seemed ideal. I'd always been a bit wary when using a garage for the first time without recommendation, especially as a woman - would they see me coming? But I needn't have worried here. They always take time to explain what needs doing, and never seem to carry out any unecessary repairs. Their invoices are clear and easy to follow, and prices are excellent - if you have a Volvo then they can usually source reconditioned spares at very good prices. When I showed my bills from Gelder's to my dad, who works in a garage at the other side of the country, he confirmed how reasonable they are. My Volvo has long been relegated to the scrap merchant, but I've continued to use Gelder's, as they will repair other car makes too, although it might take them a bit longer to source spares. They don't do MOTs, but they have an agreement with a MOT centre nearby, so they can usually complete the process within the day provided not too much needs doing. Highly recommended!

Who quoted me three weeks before they could look at my car. The guys agreed to take a quick look that afternoon, no problem, pushed back the front disc back plate which was catching and said that's it sorted, proper customer service. The Main dealer in Chesterfield had fitted the new discs two weeks earlier, suffice to say I wont be ringing them any time soon
