Am I the only one who thinks this place is kinda icky? It's all downhill from the initial "OOH, SUSHI!" reaction before you go in. I instantly apprehended that only maybe 4 items contain actual fish (no, I'm not counting Crabstick as fish), and one of them is FRIED Tuna Maki? Seriously? (Oh, and it was complete with a WTF-worthy "Non-Mayo" sticker...yeah, don't ask me...) Everything else is some variant on Chicken Maki. Spicy Chicken, Fried Chicken...you name it, they'll have found a way to roll it up with Nori and stick it in a pre-clingwrapped polystyrene tray. Yoshino is a great place for me to fall back onto when I cannot think of anything else to eat (really? in Central London?) but want something more healthy and less greasy, and most importantly, CHEAP! I used to think Yoshino was a branch out from Japan Centre to a closer avenue but these other reviewers all say that they used to supply the sushi to Japan Centre but went their own ways. This makes sense! Yes, admittedly their sushi is not the traditional sushi you will see in higher end restaurants, they have the usual California rolls, some fish (but not a lot, like Salmon/Tuna), Chicken etc. It's very Westernised as they have options for mayo/non-mayo, spicy or fried varieties. If you want authentic, this is not for you. If you want cheap and convenience? Keep reading. Taste? It's good for a cheap eat. I never go for mayo options as it just feels weird to have mayo in sushi. Usually I go for Californian rolls and Salmon rolls. 16 sushi will fill you up in no time. The best thing about this place is, the sushi is all wrapped and ready for takeaway, you have different portion sizes, like 4 sushi, 8, or even a bigger selection of different sushi to try. They also accommodate you if you want to put a few different sushi selections into a giant platter to take with you - they can wrap it up for you on the spot since you will always see their employees wrapping up and making even more sushi behind the counter. The prices range from £3-4 for 8 sushi. If you do not fancy takeaway they have several (limited) seats inside the place. One point to note is they only accept cash for purchases under £10. read more

Yoshino. We've had our ups and downs, our differences and complications over the years. And yes, you've changed, but you've stayed true enough to yourself to warrant 5 stars. I started coming to the delicatessen 4-5 years ago and still come at least once a month. Truth be told, no other fast sushi place comes close to Yoshino. They may not have a lot of fish or overwhelming selection, but they get the basics right. The rice is perfectly cooked every time (that alone is better than 90% of your sushi spots). The fish is fresh, yoshino always source the best tuna, hands down, all the mushy tuna fades in comparison to yoshino's cuts. I only go for the sushi with raw fish, the other stuff doesn't do it for me All the complaints I do have about Yoshino are really about how's it's changed, they always seem to remove my favourite offerings, like the tuna carpaccio roll and the squid nigiri. But I shall let bygones be bygones. If you're someone who gets and appreciates the simplicity of great sushi with great ingredients please don't bother with chains like itsu and wasabi for your fill. read more

Always a reliable safe bet for a quick lunch on the go, I've been coming here on and off for years. I've always found the food to be good but some friends have complained about it. It's probably not the best Sushi you've ever eaten but it's much better than the rubbish you find in a Wasabi or a supermarket for the same price. Yoshino has stopped supplying the sushi at The Japan Centre in Piccadilly, and has moved down the street to 59 Shaftesbury Avenue. It is basically a small and narrow little place which looks like a massive deli counter of assorted nigiri, small roll, inari mixed roll and medium roll sushi. Everything is packed in the same style, with a styrofoam bottom that is tightly wrapped in plastic and a little sticker in the corner with the name of the dish and price. When I say, cheap, I mean cheap. We are talking 8 sushi rolls for between £1.80-3.50, with the majority around the £2.00-2.80 mark. So, of course the problem with a place like this if you are like me is that you get really excited because you can try so many things for about £7-8. Like a kid in a candy shop if you like sushi, of course. I have been there a few times now to get a take-away for lunch (that's the only option, no eating in), and have been impresses by how much you can get for your money compared to other sushi joints in London. Overall, the quality is consistently passable, and at times quite good. In other words, everything is very fresh, and while I haven't had anything that I didn't think was okay, this sushi is not going to 'wow' you either in most cases. Some of the dishes I've had more than once are the sweet omelet, the carrot and sweet bean curd inari, and the prawn tempura and organic salmon rolls, all of which do the trick if you fancy a mixture of sweet and fishy sushi fare. The miso soup also isn't bad (the right amount of saltiness), and is choc full of mushrooms most of the time. So, if you feel like gorging yourself on some perfectly acceptable sushi for less than a tenner (or just filling your tummy for a fiver), Yoshino is your place. read more

The sushi revolution is slowly catching on in London. At the moment, the scene seems to be dominated by cheaper takeaway places or expensive sit down places. We still struggle to match the effortless inexpensive mom and pop places you find all over the west coast of the USA Yoshino has stiff competition for the takeaway sushi business in this part of London - off the top of my head, i can think of at least 5 similar businesses within a mile. Out of all these though, I think that Yoshino is the best. They certainly seem to have the most interesting combinations and most generous portions in their rolls. Are you into gorging yourself on loads of sushi for very little money? Me too. This is the place for you. I got a 6 piece cucumber and salmon roe roll for £1.30 and 4 (big) pieces of saba oshi sushi for £2.20. Delish and high-quality ingredients. This takeaway place is way better than their big competitor, the Japan Centre. Apparently they used to supply the sushi for the Japan Centre but have now jumped out on their own. I'm glad about this because their sushi is nicer and they have a lot more interesting combinations. It's not all salmon or tuna or cucumber. It's more exciting than that. I love sushi and back home, in Aus, we could buy big fat sushi rolls for a decent price [it would be around $2 AUD but the Melbourne sushi takeaways may have hiked up their prices by now...]. So when I moved to London a few years ago - you could imagine my utter shock to find it cost quite a few quid just for a few measly pieces of sushi from a supermarket - Until I was recommended Yoshino by a friend and I never looked back... For approx £2 you can buy 8 big fat sushi pieces - of fresh tuna and avocado, or fried chicken and cucumber. It's the best and cheapest sushi deli I have visited in London. And Yoshino is open 'til 8pm every night (or until all their sushi runs out). It's perfect for ducking in to grab a quick bite for lunch and moving on. The only thing is - there is only one Yoshino deli in London (they do have a restaurant but I have yet to try it) and I'm not always traveling through Piccadilly Circus - but when I'm there and I need my sushi fix I know where to go :) read more

We used to go there for lunch break to buy some take away sushi.... no more! terrible quality and also they've increased the prices. The colour and the taste of tuna maki were horrible and after the first piece I had to throw away the other 5. They don't have hot dishes but only sushi/sashimi. I go to Yoshino when it's sunny and I can pick up my sushi and eat it under the sun. Actually I go there more often (since the sun doesn't come out in London often), but that seems to be the appropriate ambiance for Yoshino's food. It's good and cheap and it does what it says on the tin. I usually buy loads of sushi, their hot dishes are OK, still better than Wasabi but their sushi is really the best take-away in London. read more

An embarrassment to sushi. I was here quite late, and there were people in front of me asking about 50% off sushi. Unfortunately for them, the only thing in that 50% off area was some type of chirashi. They didn't seem too happy as they were under the impression everything was supposed to be 50% off and to be honest that is what I'd heard too if you get there close to closing. Anyway I wanted to try the sushi as I'd heard for a while that they did the cheapest in chinatown. Yes it was cheap, but it was also horrible. I had some sort of fried chicken wrapped in what was suppposed to be sushi rice. Now I'm not a sushi connoisseur by any means, but the stuff the rice was pretty poor. Hardly any vinegar at all. There was a pack of soy sauce and get this, as soon as you empty it into your polystyrene tray, the tray absorbs it all up through these tiny holes that create a layer gap. It was all too funny till I remembered that I was the one eating this food. I had only turned away a second and looked back to wonder who had stolen by soy sauce, or whether I'd accidentally spilt it on myself. There were labels on certain packs of sushi saying non-mayo. However my pack that didn't have that sticker was lacking mayo too.I like mayo, particularly japanese mayo, so not impressed. In all, the sushi wasn't good. The presentation wasn't good. The price actually wasn't that good considering you can get better items from the McDonalds saver menu with more nutrition. In all, I would steer well clear of this place in the future. Even at 50% off (if that's still a thing) How they remain open in a prime real estate area like Soho with this fare is just unbelievable. Do yourself a favour and head to Misato in Chinatown. The quality of the fish sets Yoshino apart. Even at the time of my late afternoon visit everything still looked and tasted extremely fresh. This is my default destination for lunch, for when I don't want to think too hard about what to eat. You get quality sushi at low prices, with a decent selection of sashimi and miso soup as well. My personal favourites are the Uramaki Super Fried Tuna, the Organic Japanese Pumpkin Rolls, and the Inari (tofu dumplings stuffed with rice). Another item I like, but long since gone, is the Sweet And Sour White Fish. Bring it back, Yoshino! They say that familiarity breeds contempt, and if you come here every day you'll quickly grow bored of the menu. But once in a while Yoshino does experiment with new flavours, like the Japanese Scallop Rolls and the Tuna Carpaccio. Finally, a word to the wise; don't tamper with the glass handles on the display counters. The signs aren't for show, they really are alarmed and they will go off... read more

After renovation it's been so disappointing, they no longer do their sushi which was really good value. They still have the gyozas which is the same price as before however their claims as a truffle bar is extremely disappointing as their truffle oils/pots don't actually taste like truffle, more like mushroom instead. Good for simple gyoza, but not if you want try real tasting truffle. read more

est Sushi stop in the west end - full stop. Authentic, well made and great value for money. Never mind Yo Sushi or Wasabi - Yoshino is a hidden gem. Restaurant may be a little exaggerated but there are half a dozen stools if you want to eat your tray (or trays!) straight away and who could blame you. Great selection, including non mayo options. This is one of my favourite places to have lunch. Sushi is freshly made, delicious, and served by friendly staff who really know customer service. And it's really quick, too! It was recommended to me by an old work colleague who left our office two years ago. Our office systems have changed, as have the staff, but her lunch recommendation has outlived everything! One of my favourite places in London to get sushi. Excellent prices and excellent portions. I love the calamari tempura sushi. The sashimi is great and even the vegetarian beancurd options are great. This is the best take away sushi store in central London, it cannot be beaten on price. The sushi is always fresh with a great selection. I popped in one day after walking by several times, as the store isn't the most appealing but now I am in there all the time.
