Absolutely adored this place, with every grain of my granola personality. Its truly a blessing to have hostels such as these to foster a small budget mountain vacation. In addition, who doesn't wanna bunk up with their best buds and feel like your a kid at summer camp again? The room we had was a 6 person bunk bed room, with private restroom inside. Clean sheets, pillows and a blanket, but I brought my own too. AC in the room felt just right. The outside restrooms were co-ed and had 3 toilets, 3 showers with hot water, and 2 washers and dryer for your stinky hiking socks. They have their own cafe serving breakfast lunch and dinner. The lunch entrees had the option of trail mix and a apple, or a salad, and the trail mix is pretty awesome even has cookies!!! The cafe itself is a good size lodge with couches, tables and even a game shelf with Taboo! If we had more time, I would have taken more advantage of the spa facilities including soaks, hot tub, yoga classes, etc. The only downfall is the distance to the park, which was about 25 miles = 1 hour in the car, dang those windy roads and one way stop lights. Just roll those windows down and have some good ol' country music folks. read more

I have now stayed at Yosemite Bug twice and can say that this place is amazing. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the prices are reasonable, and the accommodations are comfortable. The cafe pumps out great food at great prices, even though there is no competition in the area. My first stay was in the hostel environment with a single bed. It was comfortable and exactly what you would expect from a standard HI anywhere you may visit, but at a great rate for Yosemite. Most recently, I stayed in a tent cabin with 2 friends that was also very comfortable. I would recommend the tent cabin for anyone traveling in a group of 2 or more. I will continue to stay here when I am in Yosemite and highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the area. read more

Amazing place to stay when visiting Yosemite. Came here I'm for valentines and the rooms were reasonably priced. The theme as you may have guessed is "bugs" but in reality most of the bugs on displays are insects and Beatles :p - but over the place is cozy, friendly staff. Free WIFI for those who have work to do On downtime, small selection of craft beer, and the dinner was amazing (got the tenderloin steak). They have yoga you can pay to participate in in the morning, shuttles, ping pong, Foosball, and of course a spa where you can relax! The new spa at the Bug is amazing!!! After a long day of winter fun, the herbal baths, sauna and fantastic 12 jet shower were just what the doctor ordered! The staff at the Bug were wonderful and we received friendly, personalized service. We stayed in the Gypsy Starlight cabin which was quiet, charming and perfect for a romantic weekend, but you definitely need love (or lots of firewood) to keep you warm on chilly nights! The location is perfect and now with the addition of a spa and even yoga classes- I can't imaging a better place to stay! read more

We have always loved the Bug and decided it would be an awesome location for our laid-back big family style wedding. Boy were we right! Best decision ever. During the planning stages, Carrie was on top of everything. She helped us through the chaos of room reservations, menu planning, venue set up, scheduling-- all while patiently answering every crazy question I fired at her. Because of the reasonable prices we figured we'd have to fend for ourselves through the actual wedding, but not so. Caroline and her staff were totally on it the whole time, making sure everything went off without a hitch. Seriously, they know what they are doing. Nobody had an empty wine glass the entire night. Oh and the food? AMAZING. The chefs prepared us a vegetarian and gluten-free feast that was the best wedding food I've ever had. There is some sort of magical nostalgic calm I always feel at the Bug. No better feeling after a long hike than sitting out on the porch under the stars sipping on a pint of beer. Or doing yoga in the sunny studio and chowing down on a big breakfast burrito under the checkered morning shade of the trees. I stayed in one of the beds at the male dorms. Pros: the two heaters keep the rooms plenty warm if you turn them up high enough. Beds are super comfortable, probably the best beds I've seen at a hostel. Cafe is conveniently located and food can be good or bad depending on what you order. The flat iron steak was pretty tough but the pork chop was above average. $10 for a day of hot tub access is worth it after a long day hiking in the valley! Cons: My cabin shower had no hot water. In the winter when it's nearly freezing outside, this makes the shower water pretty unbearable (like ice water) and I ended up just not showering the two days I stayed here. The lock to get into the dorm was just a key, which is fine when you have a private room but the other people staying in there never locked the door on their way out so the door was always unlocked and available for anyone to come in. Every other hostel I've been to has implemented an automatically locking door. I ended up keeping my valuables in my car. Cell service (on Verizon) is spotty at best, don't expect to do any web browsing. Wifi is pretty consistently unusable except for in the main office (where the router is). This is unfortunate as I was hoping to be able to get some work done before heading out to the park. I definitely wouldn't come back here in the winter because of the hot water problem. If you don't care about cell service or wifi, this is a cozy place to stay and would recommend, but be aware of the caveats read more

In brief, we loved the Yosemite Bug. It has everything you could want for a relaxing night in the woods. They have a wide range of conveniences, from tents to a spa house, and everything is very reasonably priced. Based on some things I see the Bug getting knocked for here, I'll start by saying what I said to a refined travel mate as we left an encounter with a member of the staff who didn't seem in any particular hurry: "Let's not forget where we are. Things move at a different pace." That said, the staff were quite friendly, helpful and attentive. On check in, they were quite patient as we sorted out how to best split up our payment for two rooms. We were traveling as a group of four, two of whom are here from Europe. I picked the Yosemite Bug as it looked like a nice mix of rustic and convenient for our one night stay. Morning cafe staff also helped us pick out a nice easy hike for our second day. I'd hoped we would take advantage of the live music house for a laugh at the end of our long first day's hike. A travel mate had designs on visiting the spa. In the end, we found ourselves quite content simply enjoying the cafe and each others' company. They were even kind enough to let us sit up outside on the patio after closing while we finished our drinks chatting (in fact, they insisted!). Given the outdoorsy vibe of the camp in general, we were pleasantly surprised by our two rooms. Decoration was quite tasteful, one done up in Italian Renaissance, the other Japanese decor. Beds were comfortable and the private showers were hot, most welcome after our 2000' ascent that day. Some have complained about evening noise, but we found camp to be quiet. Other guests seemed happy and considerate. Just quiet murmurs of folks having a nice night in the distance. Hardly audible once inside the room with windows open. The music house is up on the hill, mostly removed from the private quarters and distant from the tents. So unless you get the rooms closest to the party or you're unlucky and run up against a rowdy lot of neighbors, you'll have peace. Food at the cafe was quite good, but no, not five-star. They have a nice selection and accommodate vegetarians. Our three boyos all had steak that night, and the lady the mushroom veggie burger thing. All was fresh grilled and yummy, washed down with a couple beers. Still hungry in the morning, the breakfast also proved good and generous. All in all, it was a pleasant surprise. We thought the Yosemite Bug was the perfect blend of outdoorsy and comfortable for a convenient stop just outside the park! read more

Love this place.. Love. Not only is the food delicious, the relaxed, hippyish atmosphere makes it a great place for a meal, spa experience, massage... Occasionally there is live music and then the whole place becomes a party. Menu includes vegetarian fare, delicious locally made deserts, and some local brews. Pros: Great location (even a bus stop way out there) surrounded by wilderness, free parking, large lockers in room, reasonably comfortable bed, autolocking main door, 24 hour laundry room in Bodie Building at top of property ($1.25 wash, $2 dry) though no coin machine (Bring your own quarters or get quarters during office hours.) Cons: Wonky mislabled thermostat made it difficult to set the temp, no lighting from dorm buildings to 1st parking lot, limited desk hours, no box/means to drop off keys if you check out early, lack of outlets for top bunk guests, no individual bed lights, no cell reception and no wifi info provided, too hot in room Resort has a number of different types of accommodations including hostel style dorm rooms and is stretched out on various levels on a hill. The single sex rooms are actually small buildings that have showers and restrooms inside. When you enter you have a section with the restroom/shower facilities, a closing door with one set of beds then a 2nd closing door with the last set of beds. You are only allowed to drive down to the office in order to check in/out & load/unload luggage if needed. Parking is higher up on the hill. read more

TIP: Be prepared to drive 1 full hour to get to Yosemite Valley. The price and quality are totally worth it though. TIP #2: Book early! They're popular and cheap, so spots go quickly. Key amenities include cabins, dorms, and lodges at every price range. I stayed for two nights in a dorm with six beds (three bunk beds), and it was comfortable. The mattresses are super soft, the bedding is clean, and each dorm has its own bathroom. The people we stayed with were respectful and weren't a problem. There's air conditioning and heat, there are outlets and electricity. The people working at the front desk are very kind and helpful--willing to answer any questions you have about where to get gas, et cetera. If you forget sunscreen, bug spray, Band-Aids, what have you, the front desk has some for sale. I was really impressed by the food at the cafe at the Yosemite Bug - I was totally expecting sub-standard cafe food, and was surprised by a rather upscale dinner menu. I got a chance to talk to the staff and they are all chefs by trade (as opposed to itinerant workers who just happened to get stuck in the kitchen). I was only there a couple of nights but enjoyed a French dip sandwich and a really yummy, heaping quinoa and eggplant salad. Very clean and perfectly located about half an hour from the west entrance to Yosemite National Park. Amenities include: free wifi; a 24-hour kitchen; cafe and lounge area serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner on most days; a health spa (extra charge but very affordable); and yoga on Saturdays and Sundays! Like most hostels, there is a sense of community within this one as they try to get the guests together for various activities. Also, they offer a variety of lodging options for people who want to share rooms and those who don't. Overall we were happy with this hostel. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because there was a mix-up twice with the office staff booking us for 3 nights instead of 2 (it just seemed a bit disorganized, but it could've just been an off day). However, they were very polite and offered us the lowest rate for the 3 nights. I definitely recommend this hostel for cleanliness, location, and the overall feel of being surrounded by the beautiful wilderness! read more

For a hostel, this place is actually pretty nice. We came here under what I think was a group rate, so I paid $55 a night, and that also included 3 meals (breakfast buffet, sandwich packed lunch, and a hot meal for dinner). The beds were clean and comfy, and I blame it on being stuck in an all girl dorm, but sometimes the bathroom just got too crowded so I had to fight for sink space. And sometimes I got a dirty look because I was the last one to bed and one of the first to rise, but I tried my best to be as quiet as possible and used my headlamp instead of turning on the lights. But otherwise, the food was pretty good and there was a nice bonfire/amphitheater area where people could hang out. Staff was friendly too. read more

Driving by this place for years, I mistakenly thought that the tired little cabins by the road were the resort. Not so!! It is farther up a private road. I heard really good things about the place from reliable sources, so we went in July. We booked a private room, two beds and a bath. It was sort of like a duplex cabin. Very comfy, quiet and clean. There are dorms ( hostel) & tent cabins available. The dining hall was very nice for breakfast, generous portions of home cooking! The "Spa", was a delight after hiking all day. It's a jacuzzi, sauna, showers and services. The place is rustic, wooded, not luxurious. It's cabins, music, and many foreign visitors having a great time. Will go back for sure! update......We've gone back twice for spa and dinner. My friend ate Thanksgiving dinner there. Fantastic chefs! Wow the food is good! Generous portions! Found this resort online for our first trip to Yosemite. Didn't see anyone at the check-in desk so waited outside due to COVID until 3:15 at which time someone checked us in-have to agree with other reviewers that the office staff is not friendly or helpful; bordering instead on rude. Room seems nice and clean as far as I can tell but we just got here. Wish I had read some of the reviews prior to booking -started reading after my check-in encounter with the man and woman at the front desk. Seemed .... stressed?? Not sure. Now after reading reviews re same, worried about no hot water tonight for showers....: well we wanted an adventure!!!...update, there was enough hot water for us to shower so that was really nice :) read more

I love the Bug...Best place to stay near Yosemite. This is not just a hostel - it's for the whole family. You will see elderly and families with kids and dogs. There are nice cabins with private bath or if you are on a budget the tent cabins are a fine choice. I have stayed in both. The restaurant food is outstanding or if you are on a budget you can bring your own food and use the kitchen. I have had a few massages and the quality and price is great. The hot tub and spa is SO nice. I usually stay at 4 star hotels and I have to say this is an excellent place for the money. I love coming here to get away from it all... relax, hike, eat and soak in the hot tub. read more

Sooooo. As a few others have mentioned... Customer service is hit and miss. Phone customer service with the spa was great. Front desk customer service was rocky at best, refusing to acknowledge or apologize for mis information and with a thin veneer of tolerance rather than actual customer appreciation. As someone who works in customer service I don't critique customer service lightly. I've always had solid experiences in the cafe and it has good vegetarian options which can sometimes be hard to come by in the area. This isn't a reason not to go but I'd say be prepared for potential brusqueness and to push a bit if communication isn't happening well. read more

Great and recommended mountain vacation spot if you're looking to stay around Yosemite National Park with cheaper prices than in Yosemite. We went there around Christmas time and got the private dorm cabins for $55 a night. The room was clean and warm. They also have a spa & massage facility if you need to relax. The $10 all-day pass for spa, sauna & shower is a deal! The restaurant serves great breakfast, lunch and dinner and the venue is really cosy, with a friendly atmosphere. Fantastic HOSTEL !!! We LOVED the bug! It was only a gorgeous, 30 minute drive to yosemite valley. I came out with my two children, age 3 1/2 and 10 months and stayed for a few days in the cathedral room. The AC worked great, housekeeping service was spot on and the bathrooms were surprisingly nice for being communal! Everything was clean, there were washers and dryers available if you wanted to do laundry, which was convenient for us.The staff was so kind and friendly to us, my daughter had a blast meeting everyone. They had great recommendations for good hikes, and a local swimming hole very close by. We picked some fresh wild blackberries and hung out by the waterfall watching all the dragonflies and tadpoles, we even got to make s'mores by the campfire while some locals played us music! The restaurant in the lodge was SOOO GOOD, seriously, and totally reasonably priced. The menu changed daily, and they prepared food fresh from their own garden! We were very pleased!! Remember, it is a HOSTEL, so you might share some table space with a fellow traveler, and you bring up your dishes to the kitchen. (no biggie here, I like my children to learn to clean up after themselves!) We met some wonderful people, played some card games, and enjoyed the AC when it got too hot. The spa was an incredible surprise. The tea deck is full of plants and flowers which created a lovely atmosphere.The big hot tub is situated next to some open doors so you overlook trees and get to breath in all that fresh mountain air. They offer a sea salt/essential oil soak in these beautiful tubs which was DIVINE. Great on the muscles after a long day of hiking!! I also loved that they have a yoga studio, it was so nice to have a calm, quiet place to stretch and unwind. We will certainly be returning to this gem in the woods. read more

Got a single tent. It was clean but there was no heater as stated online. Wifi is super slow and the area doesn't work for Verizon LTE and 3G. There is one bathroom shared between dozens of guests. Had to wait a long time for teenage girls to be done. Staff was friendly but a bit aloof. This is a popular place for Europeans. The fire pit and community feel were nice. This place was perfect for us. The location is great - not a bad drive to yosemite park at all. We stayed in a private room and it was spacious and clean. We loved the rustic but updated feel of the place. There's a few special things about this place too: - The cafe is awesome. They have vegetarian and vegan options for every meal. They pack a lunch to take with you to the park. And they offer beer on tap, which is pretty hard to come by period, much less at a hostel. The night we were there they also had live music which was kinda fun. - The spa is cute and relaxing. It's nice to just get in the hot tub after a day of hiking. - The staff is friendly and happy to answer questions, give advice, tips, etc. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone traveling to the park who doesn't want to stay in the valley. read more

My friend and I had a great time at this place the other weekend. On a whim, we looked at hostels close to Yosemite and found two open beds (not in the same dorm room) for the next two nights. Yes, we were that spontaneous. Pros: - Vegan menu! I loved how thoughtful the kitchen staff is that they actually have a vegan item for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! I didn't try the breakfast, but I really enjoyed the dinner (Jamaican spiced tofu with kale salad, black beans, and rice) and the vegan lunch to-go option (sandwich with avocado, lettuce, peppers, onions, mustard, and hummus). They also had pie on their menu, but that wasn't labeled as vegan... that could be a future feature. - Friendly staff, so helpful :) - clean rooms and bathrooms - serene location (super relaxing, especially if you are coming straight from the city like me =P) Cons: - keep in mind it's an hour outside of Yosemite... having a car really helps here (although I hear public transportation is also an option) - I am confused, there were open beds in both my own dorm room and my friend's room. Why did everything show up as booked? Or why weren't we allowed to switch rooms when checking in and share the same room? Unfortunately, I didn't have time to really take advantage of the spa this time around (our trip was short enough as it was) but I'd like to come back and spend some more time here. read more

Great place to stay whenever you are Yosemite ........... its right on the edge of the park and our stay was comfortable ...... The only issue was in the kitchen which was terribly bad but that was because of some dirty people staying at the hostel..... we complained at the front desk and was taken care of ........the rooms were good and comfortable ...... One thing to suggest is the signage for the hostel on the road .. its almost impossible to catch it ....... please request clear signage's for fellow travelers in future ..... recommended when you are in the Yosemite Valley ...... read more

I was a little leery about this place because I've never been to a "hostel" before, but my son and I were desperate to get out of town (at least for one day!) on spring break. I was happy to even find a "room" on short notice and the price was def right ($50!), and I figured if it sucks that bad we can just turn around and go home.. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst! I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived - was expecting just a basic tent with two cots and that's all.. the tent was clean, had two nice mattresses with bedding, a little table and fan, electricity and wifi.. Like everyone on here says - the cafe is amazing! We had a really good dinner, delicious pumpkin curry soup.. Most options sounded good and were healthy. Prices were OK, and they have a good kids menu too - pizza, pb&J, mac n cheese.. The cafe is in the lodge- they also have board games and magazines, and a computer (don't know if there's a charge for it).. there's a nice hippy vibe all around. Under the lodge is the "spa" area - I peeked in there. Didn't feel like sitting in the hot tub with a bunch of strangers, it looks nice though. A couple negatives to note - this place is pretty far from Yosemite (about 40 mins drive without traffic), which is disappointing ( given the name, I figured it'd be closer). Also, the bathrooms are located kinda far from the tents - and up two REALLY steep hills with stairs. Thankfully I've been working out and I'm in decent shape - but I can see where people might have a real problem if they weren't expecting this, especially if they're older or handicapped. Also.. the parking! If you get there early in the day (like we did), not a problem. But then we left and came back at around 9:00pm and there was NO parking. I went into the store and asked about it, they directed me to park WAY up on top of the hill, to which I said NO I'm not doing that.. then they told me I can park in handicapped if I move in the morning (because they already knew no handicapped people were due to check in). But all in all , for the money I was really happy with the place, and would recommend it :) read more

Awesome place to stay! Soft, comfy beds, warm rooms, nice staff, and the food they turn out of the kitchen is GREAT! Fair prices all the way around. We stayed in a duplex unit with a shared bathroom. We never waited once to use the bathroom; hot water was consistent and water pressure was amazing. After long days hiking...it was perfect. The reason for 4 stars - only this: one hook in entire unit for jackets, daypacks, etc. A few well placed hooks would have made us feel like we didn't had stuff everywhere and we're tripping over our stuff. I initially booked a cabin here simply because it was cheap. I wasnt expecting much but The Bug COMPLETELY blew me away. The biggest standout was the food. Vegan and vegetarian options every day, a rotating nourishing menu, and a cozy home-y atmosphere. I had amazing chicken mac and cheese with spinach and tomato and my boyfriend got a loaded tuna melt with pasta salad. They have very generous portions and a reasonable price and I can honestly say it was better than ANY food I had in the Valley. All the staff were friendly and helpful and I loved the additional amenities-- a spa and yoga room? Clean updated bathrooms? A communal kitchen and place to store food? They have it all and I will be telling my friends and hope to return. read more

One of my all time favorite places to go to recharge and relax. It is a bit rustic but very clean. I love the fact that there's no cell phone service so you can really cut yourself off and recharge for a few days. The cafe serves really great food at very reasonable prices, especially when you take into account the portion size and food quality. It's so convenient to have a quality dining place on site- one less thing to worry about! We always seem to make friends with the other visitors and have had some great times around the large fire pit. I wouldn't recommend staying at the bug unless you possess the ability to relax a bit and go with the flow. However if you're looking for the opportunity to get away from it all and have an awesome experience in a place with a great vibe and a gorgeous escape to nature then the bug is for you. On a side note, we discovered the bug in 2007 when my father had his wedding there. They were extremely accommodating and we really had an awesome time with all of the guests staying for the whole weekend. We've been back multiple times since! If you're looking for a bit of a different wedding or even a group retreat I would highly recommend the Yosemite bug. read more

Not the Ahwahnee, but a way better Return On Investment We stayed in a "heated tent cabin." Far from bathroom. Bring bucket for pee-pee. Problem solved. The Cafe was excellent, big portions, hot and flavorful, reasonably priced. Cafe and lodge are comfy and inviting and there's WiFi, and there are a couple of courtesy computers, though the last thing we wanted was Internet! The tent cabin was comfortable, but stuffy; a small quiet exhaust fan mounted over the door would make a big difference. Bed was clean and comfortable. Co-ed bathroom facilities were awkward, but it's a hostel, so check some of your expectations at the counter. Communal kitchen is well equipped, and there's a large communal refrigerator as well. It's a quirky place, run in a friendly and thoughtful way. Nice drive in on 140 through Mariposa. Great job. We will DEFINITELY return! read more

We didn't stay here but ate lunch at their Cafe on our way home from Yosemite Valley. Staf was so-so, friendly enough. Food was adequate, just sandwiches for lunch (small selection at that). I think the dinner menu was good and that I would have liked it better. If we had more time, I would have stopped at their Spa, which looked really nice and clean. read more

My stay from Feb. 24 - 27 was just plain wonderful. The staff are the best. The room was (Bear A) very comfortable. The café....let me say this about the portions (large) and the taste of home cooking (yum) and the staff were just great and very pleasant.
