Overall, our experience was "OK", but i don't think we'll be back. This was my experience, from start to end:
Check in- when we arrived, no one was in the office and a ton of folks were outside smoking (no biggie, but i just quit smoking and i didn't expect to see so much of it in nature, but whatever). One of the smokers came in, checked us in quickly and efficiently. She did forget to mention to us that the power would be out from 830 in the morning on our check out day (this ended up being a total pain in the ass later).
Kitchen- we went from reception to the kitchen to drop of our food. It was a disaster. a complete and utter disaster. I can't blame the hostel for this entirely, but it looks like no one cleaned it all day. There was food in the fridge 5 days after checkout, and we had to move a ton of stuff around to make way for our stuff. and i wiped down all the counters and tables. (you're welcome.)
Cabin- so cute. we loved our accommodations, and honestly, i can't imagine a nicer place to sleep. the bed was great, private bathroom, cute little porch with a table and chairs. We stayed in the "liberty cap" A cabin and loved it. No tv, no phone, just a bunch of encyclopedias, it was PERFECT for us.
Layout of the grounds - very well thought out. great mix of cabins/tents/and what seemed to be dorm rooms. Grounds were well maintained/firepit was going everynight, easy to get around.
Cafe- I was skeptical of the cafe immediately for charging $2 for a tea bag, however, i will say, the vegan food coming out of this kitchen in stellar, the kitchen staff has their sh!t together, and are on it with the food. All dishes that we tried/ Everything vegan that they offered for 5 days straight/ was awesome. The staff were friendly, so friendly that it seemed that they were their own entity, no at all connected to the front reception desk, who were not that friendly or helpful.
Distance to Yosemite- the drive is gorgeous. I can't imagine needing to be closer to the park, we went there everyday and I didn't time it, but the drive is amazing.
Back to the kitchen- we went in the kitchen as infrequently as we possibly could due to the dishes in the sink, food scraps everywhere and no compost bin. the one time i did try to use it to open up a can, the can opener was bent up and useless. I brought it to the reception desk to see if they had a replacement. They didn't, and they suggested i get my can opened in the cafe. I left the broken can opener in the very capable hands of the front reception staff.
Spa- We had no luck at all with the spa, so much so that it turned into our running joke of the trip. We tried to sign up to get a massage on Tuesday, were told that bryce wasn't going to be doing any massages for the next two days. How is it possible that there is no other massage person to call?! We thought this was really irritating. We went back to schedule a muscle soak for 2, and it was all full that day. We went back the following day, and were able to get in for a 9pm soak. we were so excited, only to find out that there is no hot water after dinner because of the dish washing needs, so no muscle soak for us that night. We tried again a few days later and got lucky. we got our muscle soak, but due to the screaming children sharing the "spa" with us, it was about as far removed from a relaxing experience as we could get. It was helpful though, and i suggest it after 4 days of hiking in yosemite, we needed it badly.
Last day- woke up to no electricity. went to reception to let them know. the girl that checked us in told me that "oh, they should have told you that the power was going to be out." I laughed, made a joke, shrugged my shoulders, and wrote this place right off.
The reasons that we chose the bug to stay at were:
Cost (it's definitely the most affordable nice place to stay near the park)
Food (vegan options never exceeded 1 option for dinner, but it was delicious)
Kitchen (we know that we need to plan to cook most of our food/it was impossible and unpleasant to do so at the bug)
Accommodations (they were fantastic!)
More of:
vegan options - dessert??
composting
hot water after dinner in the spa
better pans in the kitchen
someone to clean the kitchen
a can opener that works
