Monkey House - My friend Wendy & a Monkey House Pint--PERFECT!

    Monkey House

As an American, I had to be taken to the "Monkey House" and pass the initiation. Lucky for me, I…read morepassed and am invited back at any time. That was 12 years ago, and every time I visit England, I visit Graham (the owner) and all the wonderful patrons at the Monk! This little neighborhood pub reminds me of what life must have been like back in 18th-century England. Folks gather round, drinking, telling stories, sharing their food (almost everyone brings food to share). My personal favorite food: Faggots. NO, NOT THOSE KIND (silly Yanks!). Faggots are equivalent to US meatballs with bread and spices. They're FANTASTIC! The local cheeses are also "brilliant", and you will not taste anything like it in stores. Now, the most important reason to visit the Monkey House: The Cider! Yep! Graham makes the world's best cider and pours it into an "Imperial" pint glass. If you're a "dandy", order a "Shandy", which is cider and lemonade. No joke: I have driven from London, 2.5 hours to Defford to take back 2 litres of cider with me on an airplane! It's that good! Plus, I guarantee you cannot drink more than 6 pints. I did . . . once . . . and I don't remember anything after the last sip! By the way, I am 6' 3" tall (191 cm) and weigh 200 pounds (14 stones)--so I'm not a "girly man"! Now, before you go, learn the rules! After all, you are visiting Graham's private home, so be respectful. The Monkey House Rules: - No swearing - No smoking - No moving furniture around in the fireplace cottage - No checks, credit cards, or IOUs (cash only) - Mingle and tell your stories! Violation of the rules will get you barred! I cannot say enough about the Monkey House, Graham, his lovely wife, Tapper (the dog), and all the patrons! I love this place!
