Classic beachside ice cream stand! The perfect solution to a hot after noon walking along the beachside. I wish I ordered the coffee soft serve because that sounds awesome, but I opted for the chocolate vanilla swirl - a classic!

Hands down, year after year after year, this place has the best fried dough on the New England coast. Seriously.

The lines barely moved and there were longgggg lines and such confusion :( FYI- *cash only ** The flavors we all picked didn't seem as special and enjoyable. I don't think we would wait again those extremely disorganized lines that were all over in zig zags with no structure. While I/ we enjoyed talking to others in line- everyone was constantly making jokes about what was going on and where the lines formed and all. Way too much confusion for us and we all agreed on plenty of other places to go next time. Also, a bunch of flavors were not available and the signs did not reflect that so some of us couldn't get what flavors we wanted. After waiting 30 + minutes we all left frustrated, unhappy, and dissatisfied with our ice cream. :(

The roots of the ice cream parlor, however, go all the way back to 1967. At that time, husband and wife Byron & Betty Brown, along with their two children, turned one of their cottages on the York Nubble into an ice cream parlor that they dubbed "Brown's Old Fashioned Ice Cream". The Browns made their own ice cream on the premises. The business was very successful for multiple decades, but by 1990 they had closed down. Dunne, a civil engineer by trade, was originally from New Jersey (and then Connecticut) but had purchase some property in York. In 1991, Dunne entered into an agreement with the Browns. He would purchase and reopen Brown's but leased the building and the land from the Browns. Dunne also chose Shain's of Maine Ice Cream to be the ice cream supplier. The following year, Dunne married Phyllis Fox: owner of Fox's Lobster House which is also located on the York Nubble. In 2014, the property owner decided to sell the land that Brown's was located on, so it closed down. The Dunnes decided to build a brand new ice cream parlor 300 feet down the street which they dubbed "Dunne's Ice Cream". Today Dunne's carries more than 50 flavors of ice cream, as well as frozen yogurt, soft serve, no sugar added ice cream, sherbet, sorbet, smoothies, frappes, ice cream specialties, and even Dole Whip! My extended family and I visited Dunne's this past summer while we were on a week-long vacation in York. York has several great seasonal ice cream spots in town, but several locals told us to check out Dunne's. There was quite a crowd congregating there when we arrived one evening. We were able to grab a table outside to sit at. After looking over the extensive menu, I had a cup of "Shark Attack" (vanilla ice cream base with a raspberry swirl and raspberry chocolate truffles), my wife had a cup of "Maine Sea Salt Caramel Truffle", our older son had a cup of "Mint Oreo", and our younger son had a cup of "Cookies & Cream". The ice cream was out-of-this-world! We can see why Dunne's has quite a good reputation in a town that's full of great ice cream options. If you're planning on visiting York, we highly recommend a visit to Dunne's!

It was founded by Margaret "Peggy" Shaheen Fennelly, who named it for her mother Josephine "Josie" Skeip Shaheen. The shop specializes in over 60 flavors of homemade fudge, old-fashioned hard candies, gummies, saltwater taffy, and other classic candies. The shop also serves Gifford's brand ice cream and Richie's brand Italian ice. After Peggy passed away in 2021, the shop was taken over by her daughter Kathleen Fennelly Perez and her husband Jose. As of 2025, Sweet Josie's is now under new ownership. The shop operates from late April through mid October. My family and I recently visited Sweet Josie's this summer while we were spending the week in York. We were really impressed with the interior of the shop; it was so colorful. All of the candy looked so delicious, especially the fudge! However, we were actually on the hunt for some delicious ice cream. After looking over all of the flavors, I got a cup of "Dinosaur Crunch" (blue vanilla ice cream, fudge swirl, chocolate-covered Rice Krispies), my wife had a cup of "Sea Salt Caramel Truffle", and our sons both had cups of "Cookie Monster". That ice cream really hit the spot; it was exactly what we were looking for. The next time we make a trip to York, we'll have to stop at Sweet Josie's again and try out their homemade fudge!

My partner and I were in search of some fudge for a Mother's Day gift. We walked in as the usual one she goes to across the street wasn't open for the season yet. Walking in we were greeted by a very welcoming atmosphere- adorned with many colorful decorations befitting of a candy shop. Further, we were immediately greeted by a staff member of the shop. This woman was extremely kind (I wish we knew her name!) and since we were not familiar with the shop, she helped familiarize us with the flavors Sweet Josie's has. They have a wonderful selection with many kinds of peanut butter, vanilla, chocolate, caramel and more for flavors. They even have a 'Cookie Monster' flavor that takes its color and decor scheme from the character! We were able to quickly make some choices while hearing some good conversation about local lore and stories about the shop. We went about our way much better for it, too, and it made my partner and I's day going in there. So next time the usual store is closed, try the one nearby you never have. You might be pleasantly surprised!
