This historic station serving both MTA MetroNorth and Amtrak is gorgeous, built by the same architects as Grand Central Terminal. A restoration a few years ago did a nice job, and cleaned the Guastavino tiles on the main lobby ceiling and the wood beams in the waiting room. While there are homeless people in the station, the station vicinity is much improved.
The old bus depot on the south side of the station is now a nice pocket park with a statue of Ella Fitzgerald, who lived in Yonkers. On the Hudson River side -- yes, the river is right out the west side door -- is a nice waterfront promenade with the very cool Science Barge moored there and open on non-winter weekends. But the real eye-opener is that the surface parking lot on the east side of the station is now Van Der Donck Park, and the buried Saw Mill River has been "daylighted" after a century. The park is lovely, and you can watch the fish while you wait for your train. Bike racks are there too. Also, if you dislike the station bathrooms, the Yonkers Library next to Van Der Donck Park has clean bathrooms.
Businesses near the station are good and getting better all the time. Highlight is the Yonkers Brewery brewpub to the south, and Dolphin and X2O to the west. read more
