With so many Thai restaurants around in Australia, they can sometimes become all to common. However, Riverside Thai would be described more as upscale Thai. They are serving Northern Thai food (where the owner is from) demonstrated by the use of spices and sauces. They like to combine an influence of Australia too, seen through the use of Lobster with the pad thai. We felt this was a standout from the menu. It was a lovely take on the traditional Pad Thai in an egg net with a half a Lobster with bean, bean sprout, chives and accompanying the flavoursome noodles. Some of the smaller dishes we tried included Mieng Kham - grilled scallop on a fresh betel leaf, lime, Spanish onion, peanut and ginger & the other was Roti Gallery - northern thai pork mince and cherry tomatoes dip with roti. We also enjoyed the spicy coconut Jungle Curry Quail with thai eggplant, peppercorn, basil and Kra chai. Beautiful colour and flavour to it and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The chef come to Riverside Thai with a wealth of experience. Paul has worked with Luke Nguyen and Chase Kojima to name a few. This experience shows in the dishes that are presented and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. You are dining in a classy restaurant space with a rustic and tasteful decor and the ambience is relaxed. Staff are extremely friendly, which is the Thai way and were very helpful with recommending dishes. When I sat down the manager came over and cracked a big smile and told me all sushi was $3.60 today, in fact that was the deal Monday through Thursday, and it's a hell of a deal because I stuffed myself with freshness for, like, $12, or something similarly ridiculous. So she grabbed us a table at Umi Sushi & Udon.... her favorite on a Friday night at Happy Hour. First off, the moment I sat down I was beaming. I was hungry and fascinated - the movement, the smells the color the excitement... I was transfixed. And what was even better... the Sushi plates were $3.60 each that night. At first I watched that train go round and round. Do I want tuna? salmon? scallops? I wanted to choose the right one, the right roll. And in the end, it didn't really matter. Each plate was as delicious as the next. We drank, we ate, we counted plates, we watched the train go around. We even asked for a special roll which the sushi chef whipped up for us in a flash. The service is great, the food is great and the sushi ain't bad as well :) If you pop on over M-F they have $5 Happy Hour between Monday to Friday at 3-6pm. Drinks included: $5 house wine and bubbles, $5 house beer and Coronas, and $7 special margaritas - what a steal. However, this is where I am not sure if I would pay this much just to eat Asian food buffet. I am Asain, born and raised, by the way. The service was fine, but their staff didn't really explain how anything works when they seated us. We had to approach one of the staff to make sure what to do and how to pay for the meal. For the Americans who had been to buffet in Las Vegas, this place would not exceed the expectations. Though the ambiance is nice but the variety of the buffet overall is not a 10 out of 10 rating. The meat section here is underwhelming. If you are a meat eater, the pork dishes are delicious. I wish they offered better meat selections. The dessert and the fruit are good. It's just enough variety and not too overwhelming. Overall, if you visit Sydney, this buffet is located in a beautiful Crown Hotel, and it is worth visiting. We started with some Spring rolls and they were out within 5 minutes. Not bad, seemed pretty fresh and tasty. For the mains we ordered papaya salad, red duck curry, and pad Thai. The Pad Thai and red duck curry were both really nice but I have to say, the papaya salad was excellent. This is my wife's favourite dish and normally when we order it at other places I find it way too spicy. The one here was beautiful though. With just a touch of spice, it's made my night. Finished of dinner with a nice little treat of sticky rice. Yum! And away we went. Definitely stop in if you're in the area. They're a Thai and Lao restaurant, so on top of your favourite Thai dishes they've also got traditional Lao yummies like papaya salad with anchovies, larb (mince) salad and sticky rice. These guys are also not afraid to use spices and herbs in their dishes, which I love, unlike many of their competitors. To top it all off, they have an unusual but amazing fried icecream.
