I decided, along with a couple of friends, to sign up for their 6 week beginners course, which came in at £48, which I thought was pretty darn reasonable! We turned up and were quickly shown where the mats and blocks were, got set up on the floor and got our payment and paperwork sorted. Anthea, the instructor, was friendly and made sure everyone was ready before moving on to the next posture or movement. We started with learning the basic yoga techniques, learning to open up our chests and really allow our bodies to relax. Once we'd got this down, we started moving into some of the more straightforward postures, helping us to stretch and open up our bodies. What we did in our first class was really easing us into it slowly, but that was great for a complete novice like myself, and Anthea talked us through every breathing technique, every movement and posture, as well as why we were doing it. My tummy muscles are a teensy bit sore this morning, but after the class I felt so calm and relaxed! I can't wait for next week and would definitely recommend the course for any novices looking to step into the world of yoga!

Unfortunately, due to starting Uni, working and any other excuses I can make up for becoming lazy I just can't seem to find time for dancing apart from a boogie on a night out. This is a real shame as it's something I've always loved doing. I've seen various classes advertised for adults but what puts me off is that fact that you usually have to pay a subscription fee and a lump sum for a block of classes most of which I'll probably miss. So, when I found out that Dance Glasgow offer classes where you pay whenever you go I was ecstatic! On average the price for a class is around £6 but usually £4 if you are a student which is amazing. They offer an extensive range of classes, better than I've seen anywhere else and they're always held in central city centre locations. Adult classes include; Beginners and intermediate ballet Pop videos - I definitely need to check this one out as it would be so much fun learning a popular dance routine and it's such an excellent idea! Hip Hop Pussycat Dolls Workout Contemporary Dance and they even have a Glee club on a Monday night where you learn a song from Glee and the dance moves too... this class lasts for two hours and is £8 (£6). Amazing! If, like me, the thought of going to the gym in unbearably boring then grab some friends and pick a class from Dance Glasgow, you'll be getting fit and have a great time too.

They even have student discounts on some classes, or you can buy gift vouchers and 10-class or unlimited cards. I've been coming here for years and everyone's welcome, there's always a mixture of ages, shapes and sizes so don't feel like you have to be a skelf or super-fit already to get involved. All the staff and instructors are encouraging and know what they're doing. Nobody's going to tell you off for not keeping up with the routines. Nobody's going to make you pay for anything in sweat. I can particularly recommend Karoliina's dancehall classes for ladies who know they have a bum, but aren't quite sure what to do with it on a dancefloor :-) The yoga and stretch and tone classes are also excellent. They have a venue in the west end and a newer location in Jamaica Street as well, check their website or Facebook page to see a timetable of what's on where. Both locations are in old buildings, and the west end one in particular is a bit cold in winter and roasting in the summer, but dress accordingly and you'll be fine. Get dancing!

Before yoga, I could feel my body weakening and becoming lazier by the day. I'm glad that I decided to sign up for classes again and have someone like Pol as my instructor! He's very attentive to all of his students, even if there are many of us in one session. He pushes us to try and go beyond our limits ("through pain and suffering, always smile!" as he says). I also like that the classes are quite intense so not only do you train your flexibility, but you also push your cardio and work the strength of muscles that you didn't know existed. My weaker parts of the body, the core (stomach and back) have improved so much in terms of strength, and my upper body (lungs, arms and shoulders) have also shown very positive changes! After 3 continuous months of practice, I can easily do the head stand and am in the process of getting the hand stand and the crow pose (which are not easy to do, I kid you not). I've also improved on my breathing (expansion of lung capacity) and overall focus technique (through meditation practices with Pol). If ever anyone wants to keep fit and try to challenge their body beyond its limits, I highly HIGHLY recommend yoga, and to be a student under an instructor like Pol would be a gift!

Bikram sessions consist of a sequence of set yoga poses and last 90 minutes, in a studio heated at about 40 degrees C° (please don't rely on me for precise measures :-)) I love going there anytime I need to be energised and revitalised. I get truly relaxed after a session, and at the same time full of energy. I should go more often than I do, but I find it hard to keep a routine. After taking their £20 for 20 session offer though, I could really see a difference. Spaced one-off sessions work as well! Make sure that you drink a lot before going and avoid eating for 3 hours prior (also avoid drinking the day before, or over-eating...unless you don't mind getting a bit sick). I've done both early morning and evening sessions. The advantage of the early morning (8.15 in particular) is that you have plenty of space because there is way fewer people attending. The advantage of the evening is that you don't need to go without having had breakfast :-) Staff if really nice too. Don't forget to bring a mat, towel and bottle of water, although you can rent them out as well. Enjoy!

In a world where judgement is a constant, it's nice to walk in the Bikram Yoga West End doors and know that not a single person is there to judge you, rather, are there to focus on taking care of themselves. It's a wonderful thing. Unassuming, down an alley off Byres road, this place is a gem. I have been practicing here for roughly 3 months (with a few weeks here and there taken off due to visitors to Glasgow and other things happening), but I'm back and I'm well and truly on my way back to the level of fitness I was prior to taking a break. I never practiced with Stephen and the gang before they opened this Byres Road location, but they have loads of regulars who have been with them from the beginning. I've practiced Bikram yoga in the states, so I get the idea of it, but for those of you who have never been, or who are new to start, it's basically a series of 26 postures done one right after each other in a hot and humid room. It's 90 minutes of a cardiovascular (no, not running about) yoga workout, all while centering yourself and clearing your head preparing you for your day/night. It really is the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I really start feeling the benefits after day 1. Don't be scared to come in and say hello (make sure to take your shoes off at the top of the stairs), the staff and all the teachers are warm and welcoming, as a Yoga studio should be. They have crackin' deals if you're a student, and if you're a student or non-student, it's totally worth trying out Bikram Yoga West End as they do a 30 days for £30 deal, with a huge discount on top of the membership prices if you join before the 30 days is over. Aside from all that loveliness, they have towel and mat rental, and locks for lockers to borrow on the day. They have bottles of plain water and coconut water for sale, and various other snacks and clothing to buy. What's best is there is a rest and relaxation area where you can gather your thoughts before and/or after class, have a cup of (free) tea (they usually have 2 flavours going at any moment) and chat with the friends you'll make. There are also changing areas and showers for those of you on the move and needing to be cleaned up after sweating like crazy! I'm almost certain I've practiced with every teacher here so far, and can assure you that each and every one of them are amazing and teach a little different than the next. All with the same script and postures, but some will correct you if you're not in the proper posture, and some will just let you on your way and figure it out with your class mates. Personally, I enjoy Sherands classes the best, but maybe that's just because we're both American. Hehe, I kid, but she's really great and is one of the teachers who help you correct your postures to get the maximum benefit from your practice. All in all, this place is great. Do yourself a favour and check it out. You'll thank yourself for it!!

The pool remains the facility's main selling point and is situated in a truly grand hall lined with lovingly-restored balconies. I emailed The Yoga Kitchen with an email along the lines of "SAVE ME!" and waited for their reply. So what is The Yoga Kitchen? As Lucy B has explained, they do home cooked meals delivered to your door on a Monday night. For one person it's £50 (depending on where you live, you might have to pay a delivery fee, and you pay a £5 deposit for the tupperware containers) and that gets you around 3-4 days worth of meals. The food is vegan/vegetarian and they will also take into account any dietary requirements you have, like gluten free. The menu arrives by email on the Monday with all preparation instructions (everything I've had has been super basic, like reheating on the stove/microwave or in the oven for less than 15 minutes) and they will text you to let you know what time they'll be at your door. I've found their communication to be amazing, especially when I've asked questions about the food ("what is this magical bar of deliciousness?" - re: a protein bar they included in my first order!). But the real question is, what's the food like? I'm not a super-fussy eater but of course there are things I don't like. Black beans, chickpeas, squash ... just to name a few. Last week I had black bean and mushroom burgers for dinner on the first night and they were amazing - seriously meaty tasting and delicious. There goes my theory I didn't like black beans. Last night I had a veggie curry with chickpeas and squash, and again, I really loved it. The food lasts well in the fridge and I find it really handy having delicious, fresh, nutritious food on hand to eat when I'm a bit short on time (and motivation) to cook for myself. I've also found the meals can actually feed two people, so the cost isn't really too bad. I've tended to split the dishes up for lunches and dinner and found that each portion is really generous, and if you can be bothered adding in your own sides (like rice) then it'll go even further. I love that The Yoga Kitchen exists, and really appreciate how good it is to get delicious food delivered to my door. It's like takeaway, but guilt-free! Amazing.

The really unique service they provide is a weekly home meal delivery service. They deliver awesome, super healthy, and delicious food straight to your door. Normally, there's at least 5 or 6 different items, designed to provide around 3 - 4 days worth of healthy dinners. For example, this week I have received a spinach and asparagus soup, a fennell and coconut tart, a sweet potato and pepper dal, a cannelllini bean salad and a pea, mint, almond and chilli dip. Oh and a wee extra of sweet chilli jam, because they know I love it! The dishes are really inventive, and I would never ever bother going to this much effort if I was making things myself. They even make salad amazing, which in my opinion, is quite a feat. So i'm getting much more variety in my diet and eating more veg and salad that I normally would. They've been great about my dietary requirements too which are primarily vegan and wheat free, but there's other bits and bobs I can't eat, and they've never made a fuss about this. The ingredients are from ethically and organically sourced ingredients where possible, which I also really appreciate, as this is the sort of thing I consider when cooking for myself, and there hasn't been a single dish that I haven't enjoyed. They also catered for my 40th birthday - just a small family gathering, and everyone loved the food. Even if it was super healthy and not your usual birthday party fare! It went down really well with everyone. I'm so glad I discovered the Yoga Kitchen. Being able to rely on them to deliver food that's good for me has really freed me up from being in the kitchen so much, and I would highly recommend them.
