I've used Class Pass a few times to take the hot yoga class. I do enjoy that class and the receptionist is friendly. If you do no have a mat you have to rent one. My only reason for the minus 1 star is that I've gone a few weeks to the same class but have had different instructors. This usually wouldn't be a bad thing but each has their own level of difficulty and poses they wanted to focus on. I would prefer a bit more consistency. read more

I've taken several classes here through classpass and have found it very welcoming! They offer a good variety of classes (my favorite so far has been Power Yoga, which is a little more of a workout). The teachers are all very friendly and they do a good job of demonstrating and explaining the flow. Some are much slower-paced - such as the back to basics classes - but they do a good job providing modifications in all the classes. read more

Yoga Heights is such a great studio. It has served as a great introduction to yoga, as the instructors are incredibly welcoming for new yogis. I've just joined Yoga Heights and am quite satisfied so far! I've never taken a yoga class before, but it really kicked my butt the first class on Thursday night to make me want to come back for more! The instructor was tough and seem to want to push us beyond certain limits, which is great if you like a challenge! There is a variety of classes for beginners and each one seems to vary which is exciting. The basic class is definitely good for beginners, but the all Levels flow is worth trying too. The instructors give options depending on your level and aren't intimidating when asking for explanation. I do like how everyone is friendly and accommodating. The instructors are very hands on and willing to answer questions or just lend a hand with poses. Some members don't seem particularly friendly, but I guess that's a city vibe. All in all, I'd recommend trying a free first class of the $39/unlimited 3 week special. I'm enjoying my unlimited membership now! read more

I joined YH for 6 months after winning a charity raffle-- so points to YH from the beginning for being a part of helping the community. It was a very generous prize too THANKS! They were wonderful in setting up my account and flexible with the start date too as I was recovering from injury and couldn't really flow.... eventually, I was ready and found a full schedule with a plethora of options. I really enjoyed the 45 minute classes that I could sneak in on a busy workday between emails and calls. I participated in virtual classes only but I found them really great! I did yoga, barre, yin...a variety of instructors who were kind and created a relaxing setting even through our virtual situation. I'm sorry I never got to an in person/outdoor class. Hoping to continue with them because my body will be very mad if I don't. read more

I visited Yoga Heights last night because I needed a relaxing setting to clear my mind, stretch my body, and wind down for the evening. I saw the Gentle Candlelight Yoga class and chose it because it seemed to be the best fit being that that was the description. I am not a Yogi at all and haven't taken a class in years so I figured this would be good for all levels. I used Classpass and hadn't checked the reviews before hand but one review was my same exact experience. I took Alexandria's class and from the moment I walked in she seemed stern and dismissive. I said that I was new and was looking around to see people grabbing items and she just said "grab a block and a strap" and I'm looking like okaayyy I see the blocks but where are the straps and she just pointed and turned away, another student showed me where they were. When I struggled with knowing what to do or looking around at other students, no assistance was offered and when I asked, she answered in a dismissive and annoyed tone as if I should've known what to do (but I overheard her assisting a member she was clearly familiar with later on in the class in a nicer tone). I don't want to seem like I wanted her to fall at my feet she just didn't give a welcoming and inviting vibe for a first timer or offer any assistance. This killed my whole "I'm trying to relax" mood and thirty minutes in I just wanted to leave but didn't want to disrupt other students. Also, the mat I rented smelled like feet and was super distracting during class. Lol The two stars was for the woman working the front desk who was nice and helpful. read more

My first time at this relaxed and cozy studio. I went for the Friday evening 'beats' yoga class, known for its great music. It exceeded even my high expectations! Helen, our talented instructor, continually reminded us to go at our own pace which was so reassuring and allowed the pros and novices to all feel included and challenged appropriately. It's an uplifting and energizing workout. Definitely worked up a sweat and it's a great to destress from the work week. I got hooked on Yoga Heights via their "unlimited classes for 3 weeks" deal. I have since then taken the Flow and Yin classes many times and cannot imagine my week without them. Great facility with 2 yoga rooms and I have yet to have a yoga instructor I do not like. In addition they have great special classes. Friends rave about the boot camp and I love the candlelight classes on Fridays. Great way to wrap up the week and get ready for the weekend. And then there is the magical "Cosmic Flow" - only offered on the first Saturday of the month - vinyasa yoga with music and night sky with stars. It books up quickly so I usually sign up weeks in advance for fear of missing it. Yes, sad! I also just saw they offer outdoor classes on the roof of a nearby apartment building and a community garden over by Washington Hospital Center. What does set Yoga Heights apart is their connection with the community and trying to be inclusive. While I have worked out at many yoga studios and enjoyed them this really made me a true fan of the studio. They partner with community groups and non-profits, highlighting their programs and providing support. In March the team had a tracker for yogis on which we would place stars for work outs, civic engagement, volunteering and each start earned you a discount for class attendance. They also have their administration down with an App for easy sign-up and different class packages and specials for "every wallet". read more

The instructors have been great for myself (Total beginner 40 year old male) as well as my girlfriend who has probably been to every yoga studio in DC. I think a mark of a great studio is one that can serve all levels and all bodies at the same time, in the same class. I first came to YH as a very beginner, couldn't touch my toes, and suffered from general uncoordination (the latter has only improved slightly). After almost a year of consistent practice, and huge changes in my strength, flexibility, and ability, I find myself still feeling challenged by many of the same classes and instructors I visited as a complete beginner. Taken with the grain of salt that I would probably fit the "yoga-body" mold, the reality is your body is different every day, and I have only felt encouraged to accept and embrace that. Some days are victorious-pretzel-on-arms days, but I never felt judgment as a stiffie, taking a lot of child's poses because I just can't today, modifying for terrible knees, when my body just won't do whatever, or falling on my face trying the new thing. I definitely have left yoga classes elsewhere feeling worse than when I started, frustrated or stressed by my inabilities, but I've never felt that way here. The attitude overall seems to be: respect your body, try, and have fun as you do you as you come today. The studio doesn't have a lot of frills. There are basic bathrooms with showers and some toiletries if you're in a pinch; I'm not sure what else you really need. Yes the liquor store causes people to hang around who lack manners especially towards women. Welcome to DC and to Trump's America. Nothing the studio can do about that. You can have affordable yoga or frills. Some classes can be crowded, but most of the time there's plenty of room; it varies. I don't like every instructor, and some instructors are brand new, but the majority of the instructors are very experienced and very talented, and there is a TON of variety in class types. I visited a lot of other studios as a ClassPasser before joining as a member here, even though I neither live nor work in Petworth. Overall I found this studio had the best mix of welcoming attitude, experienced instructors, and the type of yoga I like: minimal chanting, fun playlists, and non-heated physically challenging classes in both the early morning and late evening. read more

The yoga offered is not worth the price. I hit up three classes just to make sure: Power Flow, Hot Flow and Prenatal. I've been practicing yoga for 10 years, and the quality of instructors is not worth $18 a class, or even worse $155/month! I really wanted to like this studio, because it is close to my house, but I cannot bring myself to pay these prices. Yoga, for most active DC residents, is a complimentary practice on top of other athletic pursuits. I would not recommend this overpriced studio for athletes looking for yoga. I believe Yoga Heights has the same philosophy as most Crossfit boxes: that you are paying for the community as well as the service offered. I'm sorry, but that is not for me, and I'm sure many others (who are already paying gym prices) are not buying into it was well. read more

PROS -less than 10min walk from my house -doesn't smell like feet -air conditioning works pretty well (most yoga studios are very skimpy on a/c!) -decent music -still new so classes aren't too crowded (but it's growing rapidly!) CONS -the class packs expire too quickly! The whole point of buying a class pack instead of a monthly pass is because you know you're not going to be able to go as often as you'd like. I'm interested in getting the 10 class pack but i'm worried I won't be able to go 10 times in 2 months. -floor is really hard! lol (i always grab a blanket for some cushion) -not enough 'regular' yoga classes (I don't like heated yoga classes and I'm not a big pilates person...so that limits me a lot. I really did have a great experience here overall. First, the positive: I went onto their website and decided on the 39.00 unlimited 3 week membership. What a wonderful idea to test out a studio. For 3 weeks I tried all sorts of classes: All Levels Yoga, Candlelight Yoga, Cosmic Yoga, Power Yoga, a constructive rest class, Restorative Yin, Beats Flow. It was great and I got to experience many different teachers and their styles. Kudos to them for that. I found some really wonderful instructors who were very warm and welcoming and just really good teachers, specifically Liz, Michelle, Sadie, Jess S., and Alexandria. And I must say that by far the nicest front of house staff are Isabel and a curly haired lady with a nose ring-I have forgotten her name and feel terrible about it. Now, the not so great: The vibe at first is not very inviting to new members. When you walk in and the front desk person sees you, there is a 50-50 chance they will greet you. I had never been to the studio before and the woman at the desk asked me for my last name, so I told her and then she said I was all set and started talking to the woman next to her. I didn't know where anything was, so I kinda just wandered around, found the restrooms and followed other practitioners into the room. The instructor for my first class, an all levels yoga, didn't come and say hello or seem to acknowledge that there was a person she had never seen before. New studios don't have to be intimidating, especially when it is an all levels class. After I had purchased the 39.00 membership, I checked in on yelp and saw that I had a 10% off coupon good for the first purchase. I noticed that the 39.00 was also considered a deal, so I wasn't sure if I could combine them. In hindsight, I should have asked, but instead I waited until closer to the end of my 3 week trial and inquired about the Yelp deal through email. The response was that, no, I couldn't use the Yelp coupon because it had to be used on the first purchase. I decided to go in and speak to the front desk to just check if the coupon could be either added to my first purchase-which I made before I checked in so the coupon was not yet available to me-or if they would honor it on my second purchase-a month of unlimited membership-which I was ready to make. Again, the front desk proved less than helpful. I inquired twice about the coupon. The first time, the person at the front desk said she was just an instructor filling in and that I would need to either come back later that day or the following one. So I did, and I spoke with a different person who said she would need to contact the owner. I did this right before a class and when I came out of class I checked to see if any information had been discovered and there was a different person at the desk who said that they would be in touch with me. That was a week ago and I have heard nothing. The lack of customer service and follow up is the primary reason I have not returned. I think the studio has great potential. They offer a variety of classes and have some really wonderful teachers. I hope they can figure out how to make the overall experience positive, because that cold first impression could be turning people away. read more

I first heard about Yoga Heights when Jess, one of the owners(?), taught free community classes at Mary's Center. I was really impressed with her classes and that they were invested in making yoga accessible to everyone. Since then, I've tried a couple of the 4:30pm weekday classes, which are incredibly affordable compared to most drop in classes at $5 for a 1 hour session. It's an all levels flow, and both instructors I've had were great though definitely had their own styles. The room was never too full, and I was able to walk in and grab a spot even coming about 5 minutes before class started. I would recommend starting with a beginners' class though if you're a true beginner rather than going straight to the all levels flow. The instructors will often say the name of the pose rather than demonstrating it unless everyone looks confused. The studio is a convenient short walk from the Petworth Metro. I love the setup that there are cubbies by the check in desk to store shoes or outerwear, but then there's cubbies in the class room itself for you to store your valuables. Very secure. There's plenty of blocks and straps to borrow for free, and they also provide a face towel by the check in cubbies if you need one. Mat rental is $2. read more

After trying the Takoma location, I decided to give the Petworth location a shot. I attended the 7:45pm Hot Flow class with Colleen McClintock. It was my first heated yoga class. So good! The warmth really helped with the flexibility of my muscles. Colleen was a good instructor. She did a great job verbally and visually showing the poses. Her hands-on assists were good, too! I've been to a handful of classes in the mornings and I really like this studio. The "hot yoga" is set at 88 degrees and it's just hot enough to really jump start your day! You can't beat the $30 for 30 days unlimited deal for new students. The studio has classes at convenient times throughout the day so it's a good way to sample a bit of everything. Super convenient location if you're on the green line. I live just down Georgia Ave and it's been impossible to find a good studio that isn't on the red line or on U street. If you live in Petworth or Columbia Heights or somewhere in between, you can't beat the location. Love the classes, love the teachers, love the vibe, and love the hot yoga. read more

I've been going to this new yoga studio in my neighborhood since just after it opened and I've been really impressed. Each of the five instructors I've had bring something new. I've only ever done yoga sporadically over the years but I felt like the class offerings strike the balance between being meaningful yet safe, if that makes sense. One thing I particularly appreciate is the extra bit of personal attention the teachers offer. I generally have some nagging athletic injury or other so the early teacher check-ins keep me from overdoing it. read more

I really have enjoyed my time at Yoga Heights. They have a great deal where you can just pop in up to 4 times a month and pay $5 a class. It's a great situation if you live in the area and you want to be flexible with your schedule. The only problem lies if you get boxed out of a class because it's full. The vibe at this studio is really nice, comfortable, and welcoming. It's great to see children around the studio a lot. Some of the classes I took that were slightly above my level and a good level of challenging felt like I wasn't really welcome there. Many studios talk about the ego and doing what feels good to you in that moment, not what looks good to your neighbor on the mat. At a few of the more challenging classes, I felt a pressure -- that I had to fight -- to impress everyone else in the class. That does not line up with my yoga philosophy at all and made me feel pretty bad. As long as I avoid those classes, though, and go to the general vinyasa flow classes, I've found that vibe to not be prevalent. read more

PROS -Variety of classes at different times--should suit most people's needs -Child Care is offered at an affordable rate for those who need it -On site showers -It's AWESOME that they emphasize affordability and never turn anyone away - People who attend classes there are decent human beings for the most part (unlike some other studios where people seem snooty) NEUTRAL Instructors-some are very good, none are horrific or anything but most are just okay. I like Amy Rizzotto's classes a lot though. CONS -classes can get pretty large (26 people) -All Levels Flow classes can be heavy in the chataranga department (which is great for some, not for others) -Dicey neighborhood (Georgia Ave by a liquor store ..need I say more?) -The late policy is extraordinarily distracting. People are allowed to walk into classes up to 10 minutes late which really isn't fair to every one who got there on time in my opinion. read more

When I saw a yoga studio was coming to the Columbia Heights neighborhood the same time I was going to be moving there, I knew it was meant to be! And I wasn't disappointed. My favorite part of Yoga Heights is the VARIETY of classes, I can't stand when a studio only has two or three variations of classes, I want to explore! Hot flows, restorative, basic vinyasas, prenatal (NOT that I need that at any point in the near future,) Yoga Heights does it all! Not only do they do they do it all, but they do it well, as I have yet to attend a subpar class. Also, the feeling of community a big draw. If you are new to yoga and would like a welcoming and kind space to get started, you must try Yoga Heights! I cannot say enough about this fun studio. The lunchtime yoga class with Michelle was great. True to the description, this really was an all levels class. We warmed up with a few sun salutations then cycled through a series of twists and warriors, with Michelle attentively walking around the class and helping people adjustments. The studio is brand new and the front yoga room was nice and sunny! Mat/towel rentals were nice, and make for easy, spontaneous yoga dates. I hope that they'll add more lunchtime classes -- this was a nice break from the office. Also looking forward to trying more intermediate level classes. read more

I usually prefer their Takoma location but I love that they offer community events and different class offerings like clothes swaps, mindfulness, and other workshops. I love this studio!! I live in the neighborhood and eagerly awaited the opening, and was not disappointed in my expectations for it! It is a great space, with a good variety of wonderful teachers (I am impressed how much they mix for a relatively small studio). There are lots of class times so I have found it easy to work into my schedule. And everyone is VERY nice. I also really appreciate the low key and welcoming vibe - definitely a place everyone would feel welcome. e.g. not one of those studios you feel like you need to be wearing matching lulu lemon yoga gear just to fit in. read more

I have been going to Yoga Heights for the last year and am grateful for this studio opening in my neighborhood. I've gone to other studios in DC and never felt the sense of community or welcoming that I did when I walked into my first class at YH. I never thought of myself as a "yoga" person and now I'm going 3-4 times a week. I've gone to a lot of the different class offerings and particularly enjoy the All Levels Flow, Hot Yoga, and Restorative Yin classes. The Back to Basics was also really helpful when I started coming to the studio to practice alignment and other poses. Hoping to continue my practice here when I move to Silver Spring next month. After that first class, I tried their awesome Unlimited First Month deal. After that...I never looked back. Their classes are one of the things getting me through this year. Even when things went virtual, they did a lot to help people feel connected. I always have positive experiences at Yoga Heights. The one on Georgia Ave is a nice walk away from my house, but I go to both locations. The staff at both locations are always welcoming and both places are very clean. I go to all of Alex Hall's classes and workshops. She is an amazing yoga instructor who truly cares about her students. I always leave feeling calm, refreshed, and loved. If you haven't taken one of her classes or gone to a workshop, do yourself a favor and sign up. read more
