I took the (all lev) Rest & Reset Restorative Yoga class with Janelle this Sunday evening. It was a much-needed break after a long week. Took a minute to find the studio (look for the Chipotle and the door will be right next to it!) take the stairs to the third floor and you'll be greeted with a wonderful, calming space and a lovely receptionist. I loved the free herbal tea before and after class, really brought the whole experience together. The class was full with around ~15 ladies, but the studio space is large to accommodate. The only reason this studio didn't get 5 stars was the smell of Chipotle during class. Might not bother some people but imagine getting a big whiff of grilled chicken during your Shavasana! Haha There will also be some car honking and ambulances since the studio is located on a busy street. Other than that, the studio was clean and lovely. read more

April 2022, after a meditation with the intention of "flow", I went for a walk found Flow in my neighborhood. I walked into the spacious studio and knew this was my new yoga home. I enjoy the diversity of the yoga teachers and all the class offerings. There are heated power, flow classes and more meditative classes. Whereas most people are more takers than givers, Debra is a way more giving person. I can see how that impacts her Yoga Studio. Her business is only an extension of her passion for Yoga and serving society to better it. She is approachable and flexible understanding individual needs from the bottom level of a Senior like me to the top level of training teachers of Yoga. Flow Yoga in Washington D.C. has earned the designation of 'BEST' Yoga Studio from independent sources. Teachers are fine and the classes are...fine. The comments about overcrowding are absolutely correct, it's nearly a fire hazard with how squished people can get. Also, annoying when you have that one show-off in every class who wants to do head stands the entire time while the rest of the class flows. That's the main problem I have with this studio - the clientele. Some of the least friendly, most stuck-up people I have ever met practice here, and I've practiced at a variety of studios in major cities. Sure, their chaturangas are perfect and they energetically hop to the front of their mat unlike us mere mortals who have to step (eyeroll) but the spiritual practice of the yoga is sorely lacking. Part of that is on the studio which doesn't do too much to incorporate that but I also just think the people that come here are super unpleasant. read more

I think it is finally time that I review Flow since I have been here 20+ times! I have nothing bad to say, honestly is the best studio in DC. The teachers and staff are wonderful, and the people that come here are so nice. This isn't one of those studios where you come in and people judge you for your appearance or what you are wearing. They offer such a wide range of classes from hatha, vinyasa, dharma, ashtanga, rocket, etc., as well as workshops. If you want a real workout, come to these classes. You can keep your mat there for $10/month and they have mats and towels that you can rent. This place has two locations, so make sure you know which one you are going to prior to arrival. I would give this place negative stars if I could. I have been going to flow since the beginning of the pandemic primarily for their mysore class. Recently, a substitute instructor adjusted me very inappropriately. I reached out to the owner, Debra, about it. At first she seemed very apologetic and suggested a phone call. When I took her up on the offer to tell her in full detail what happened, I never heard back from her. A few months later I reached out again to Debra, but this time to cancel because I still have ptsd from the incident. She had another team meme er send a message to me with instructions on how to cancel. I will not continue to support a business that allows their instructors to take advantage of the students going in to practice yoga. Avoid this place. read more

I took Ryan Daniel Smith's Prana Flow class on Tuesday of this week, and loved his West Coast vibe. Relaxed, chill, welcoming - it was refreshing to have a teacher from California. He adjusted our alignment - but in a gentle, no pressure/judgement sort of way. The music was amazing, and practicing at sunset on a warm evening was sweet. read more

Unresponsive front desk staff. Finally got them on the phone and was on the phone with them for one hour trying arguing about ONE class which i lost due to their unresponsiveness by email. They didnt give me the class. Second thing - the classes are packed. Some are definitely a fire hazard. They told me it is a 50 person capacity in the 14th street studio, which is insane. They just want to pack the classes to the maximum to make the most profit. I dont recommend this studio. There are many other options in the area. read more

This one star is for the front desk on the 14th Street. Came to ask some questions because No response from the email. If you could just find everything online by yourself, DO NOT try to ask their assistance. Because the lady at the front desk would ask you whether you have a smart phone and said you could download an app then found everything there. No concept of what customer service means at all. Attitude is rude and makes you feel you are not welcomed at all. I have been to yoga places all over the world, worst experience ever. Decided not to be a customer here. read more

I have tried several yoga studios since I moved to DC and I can honestly say I'm so grateful for having found Flow Yoga. They have an amazing variety of classes across both of their studios, including Ashatanga and Ashatanga Mysore, the teachers really know what they are doing and the staff is super friendly and helpful. They have classes for all levels and teachers always offer alternatives depending on your level, and if you are quite advanced you'll love it even more, since they have very challenging classes too. Both studios have such a lovely vibe! they also have sofa area where you can sit and enjoy tea before or after the class. Flow Yoga seems to be a lovely community and I highly recommend it! read more

This place stresses me out. To be frank, the teachers that I've had are...a little...mean! They make corrections that come off as unsupportive like "No, that's wrong!" Or "You guys aren't doing this right!" Instead of approaching corrections with a more strengths based "Try this instead" model. Another note on the teachers: some of them talk, and by talk I mean GOSSIP. Uhmm, what part of yoga includes gossip? For me, Flow is also fancier and posher than it needs to be, and gives off an almost "fake zen" vibe. I don't need a boutique and new agey music to deepen my practice. I also don't like fighting with people for a spot for my mat, but that seems to be problematic at a lot of studios, so eh. read more

I have mixed feelings about Flow. I am currently a member, but debating whether to retain my membership for another month before I leave the capital back to Chicago. Below is a summary of the studio's pros and cons, from my perspective: Pros: 1. Some of the instructors are really excellent - Specifically, Angela - Afro-Brazilian dance, Juliet - yoga fit, Leah and Gopi -Yoga. 2. Great variety of classes: Dance, meditation, Pilates and different types of yoga. 3. The waiting room - is a great place to relax with some tea and cookies after a hard class. 4. Great Location- Close to Whole Foods and Sweet Greens! Cons: 1. A few instructors are very inattentive and even mean. They make you feel uncomfortable and that you are not good enough for their class. I have never encounter such behaviors in other yoga studios/gyms. 2. The reservation systam- even when reserving 2 weeks ahead it is still hard to get a spot in the class you want- so unlimited pass can be rather limited. 3. The classes are very crowded, which many times effects one's range of motion. Definitely not an intimate studio. 4. The prices for all passes are very high. read more

Claustrophobic cluster-!@#$. It is common to be packed very closely while inside a yoga class in DC, but getting in and out of class is the issue here. This place is just too small for the amount of classes that they offer. The stairs to get in are not even wide enough to fit two people side to side without turning sideways and the check in area is always a mad house. The last two times I have taken class here, someone moved my jacket and shoes to a totally different area in the closet/storage area, not even keeping my jacket and shoes together like I had left them. Who does that? I don't think that person is living the yogi lifestyle. It took forever to find my stuff, especially the last time when the person put one of my shoes on the left side of the room and the other on the right side of the room. Very irritating. Flow does offer a huge variety of classes though. My favorites teachers were Leticia and Mariska. Being that they offer such a variety, it could take a little bit to find one that suits your level and interest, which leads me to say that they have a new student special of $50 for an unlimited month of classes. You can also take a free class on your birthday. If they ever expand their studio space to maybe three times its current size, I will certainly try it out again, but I don't think that is going to happen in the near future. read more

I love my sunday morning sessions here at Flow Yoga. It's challenging but somehow calming. I leave each class feeling great. My only complaint is that these classes are WAYYY too crowded. There have been times that I had to squeeze in between two people and we were so close that our mats were pretty much touching. I think this inhibits a really effective yoga practice because you can't do some of the moves correctly due to lack of space. I was at a session recently where a guys foot was right in my face because there just wasn't enough room. I wish this would be addressed. Otherwise I do love this studio and the classes. read more

I want to caveat this review by stating that I am typically the kind of girl that would rather chase a ball than go to yoga, but I recently realized that strength and flexibility were two qualities that yoga might be able to help out with. My warning to new yoga-goers is that Flow is great for the introductory Fundamentals classes, but it is a tough transition to go from Fundamentals to Flow 1. The confidence and calm that I experienced in Fundamentals was quickly whisked away as I tried my first Flow 1 class. Not only did the instructor point me out as "what not to do" when attempting some sort of headstand maneuver (in sports you're always taught to try, right?) but another yoga patron gave me tips on breathing in a slightly condescending manner. I ended up leaving the studio feeling more deflated and stressed out than when I entered. So, I'm not giving up yet....I just choose the back corners of the studio now and make sure I go with a friend for moral support. So yelpers beware, if you're not a yoga natural, come armed with friends and a thick outer shell. read more

Caveat: This place gets crowded, and hectic. I think that another reviewer's complaint that it often feels like a "yoga factory" is spot-on. Also: This is far and AWAY the most expensive studio I've been to in DC. Can you say $147.50 for one month unlimited?! Holy granolas, batman! The tranquil masses pay though, because this studio offers the very best. To explain: a) The classes flow through space and time: Get up early for a 7:00 am flow before hitting the office, or drop by late for an 8:00 pm class, or even later for the Friday midnight flow to get your groove on before hitting the clubs. Flow holds classes throughout the day, ensuring you can get your shanti on when you most need it -perfect for the over-extended professional on a tight schedule, or the underemployed (trust-funder) yoga nut who wants to spend all day inverting. b) embraces diversity: In addition to all levels of vinyasa flow, get your ashtanga, iyengar, jivamukti, pilates, insert-esoteric-yoga-style here. Chant sanskrit or rock out to Madonna. Live music on occasion, kirtan or DJ'ed. Yowza! c) top teachers: They charge you the most so they can pay their instructors the most - and they've attracted the best. Of my top five DC instructors, three of them are here, along with their followings of serious, flexible students. I don't like to name names in reviews, but really, they're all great at Flow. For reals. (PS to the in-crowd: John Schumacher's protegee teaches here!) If you're the type that likes the very best, get yourself to Flow! Pick up fancy Lululemon gear across the street, and after class swing by the Whole Foods next door for fancy orgo-dinner and orgo-groceries! For the rest of us, there's the $50 first month newbie special - give it a go, and it might be the motivation you need to bust ass for that raise/promotion/bank heist! First a little background about me. I'm a guy, late 30's, in mediocre shape. I had always wanted to try yoga but my beer-drinking, football-watching mindset left me feeling more than a bit intimidated at the prospect of showing up cold to a full-fledged yoga studio. After many "I almost went's" and "meant to go's," I finally went to Flow. I researched many studios in the Logan/Dupont area and ultimately I decided on Flow because of 1) good reviews, 2) lots of types of classes at different times, 3) proximity to my apartment (about 100 feet). I signed up for the intro month pass late 2013 and then continued with the monthly unlimited pass. I don't have any other studios to compare with Flow, so keep that in mind. I've been to Vinyasa Flow 1 classes with Leah, Tori, Gopi, and Joan. Each are different in their styles. My first class ever at flow was with Leah and it was a great experience. It was a good pace for newbies; she spent time one on one to make adjustments; she paused the class to demonstrate some techniques. Tori adds more of a spiritual element to her class. I didn't think I'd like this as an atheist (and all around curmudgeon). I thought it'd be too new-age or hokey for me. It wasn't (sorry Tori!). It was actually really nice, calming, and thoughtful. I have anxiety issues, and Tori emphasized relaxation--particularly at the end of the class. I've only taken Gopi's class a few times but I very much enjoyed the change of pace--the sequences are different and there were moments of more aggressive energy (in a good way). I've taken both beginner (1) and intermediate (1.5) classes with Joan. Joan is amazingly graceful and I aspire to practice yoga like her one day. I've found her 1.5 classes to be a great transition from beginner to intermediate. It's challenging, faster paced, but I don't feel out of place there even though I'm likely often the least advanced beginner in the room. I've taken one class with Greg (9:30 pm, 1.5) and what a treat! The class was chill and challenging at the same time. One of my best classes ever at Flow. So that's the yoga, but what I REALLY love about Flow is they offer Pilates, yoga barre, and flow fit. I've taken power Pilates with Sarah who is pleasant and amazing in how strong she is. I had never taken Pilates before when I strolled into power Pilates one Tuesday evening. For the uninitiated, power = harder. This class kicked my ass. At one point, as I lay half way on my mat, in a pool of my own sweat, I whispered "leave me here to die." I'm pretty sure Sarah didn't hear me or if she did, she thought I said, "One more teaser." I can actually do a sit up now, several on a good day! :) If you are new, let her know so she can give you lots of mod options ranging from hard to how-the-heck-does-she-do-that-hard:) I've also taken Pilates with Clare, Jennifer, and Katy--but mostly with Clare. Clare is fun, and she offers options for both beginner and those who are advanced. She's stayed after class to help me improve my technique. I adore the yoga barre class with Megna. Flow only offers this class once a week at 7am. I am NOT a morning person, but I make an exception for Megna. I think of it like Pilates, but somehow harder. Megna really pushes you. I try to cheat when she's not looking but somehow she knows. She always knows! It is NOT for the faint of heart (or arms, thighs, gluttes, or abs). If you are on the fence, go! I'll be the guy in child's pose every time Megna isn't looking. Finally--flow fit. Juliet is strong, energetic, funny, and her classes are a joy...and by joy I mean a cardio torture chamber...but in a joyous way:) I LOVE this class. Bring water, and bring all the guile and fortitude you can muster. Okay, so what don't I love? As others have pointed out, the stairways are cramped and the front desk gets swamped during peak times. I've spent considerable time coming up with a solution to this: 1) get there a few minutes early, 2) relax. But you should be aware of this before you arrive. It's easy to be intimated by the crowds and occasional chaos during peak times. And yes, the classes can also get crowded. This can be especially tricky as a taller guy. So this is an insanely long review. But I wanted folks out there who are where I was a few months ago--an intimidated newbie--to feel more comfortable about what to expect. The bottom line is my yoga experience has been excellent and there are enough teachers and times that you should be able to find something/one that works for you. The feature that really sets Flow apart, in my opinion, and why I intend to remain a faithful customer is the variety of classes they offer in addition to yoga: the many Pilates classes, the great flow barre class, and the flow fit class. Finally found home. Moving across the nation is no easy feat, but finding your home yoga studio is an even greater task. After exploring a number of studios around the District (hallelujah for new member kickbacks), Flow Yoga sticks the landing for my new found home. My first time round was through Classpass for Mimi's Flow Power 2..I was absolutely blown outta the water! It's been quite a while since an instructor has really challenged me and pushed me to new heights, but Mimi knows just how to advance you to the next level. (Note: This is an advanced class so work your way up to it). I tried a few other sessions the next week: heated power 1.5 by Angela, rocket vinyasa by Jonathan, and a candlelight gentle 1 w/ Corinna. All were therapeutic and memorable. As for the vibes, nothing but great. They have a dedicated customer happiness team that works on social media and customer escalations - IR and VR. There's also yoga mats and towels for rent, hot tea, a sweet balcony, and animal crackers :) *Perhaps the team could add granola to the mix? **Special shoutouts to Christina and T for making my first visit an awesome experience read more

Caveat: I just started practicing yoga recently and am trying different studios to see which one(s) I like the best. I box and kickbox for my normal exercise routine and am learning yoga to balance me out. I attended Flow on Saturday afternoon for the Yoga Fundamentals class. Upon entering, I noticed the large and tastefully decorated waiting area. The front desk personnel seemed genuine, helpful, and attentive until both of them forgot that they had signed me in already (it wasn't THAT busy). They both asked if they could help me...again. Really impersonal. The class was okay. I went to Yoga District the day before and thought I received better instruction there (the class was Alignment 1). The instructor at Flow seemed a little disconnected and really didn't assist anyone in the class with their technique which I found irritating. I want to hold these poses correctly and need assistance doing that. He also used a lot of "yoga words" that I didn't understand and he didn't explain them. At Yoga District, the instructors are very helpful with correcting technique and explaining the meaning of " yoga words." I think Flow charges astronomical amounts of money for memberships and I don't think it's worth it. Although a nice touch, I don't need or expect free cookies and tea. I am paying for a good yoga instructor. At Yoga District, it's $10 for a drop-in class! It's also a no-frills studio, but I prefer that. It's the same reason I belong to a no-frills boxing gym - all I need are bags to beat on. No complimentary protein drinks or locker rooms required. This place doesn't have the Zen atmosphere I was hoping for. It almost feels like a place to "be seen" rather than a place to actually practice yoga. Once my "Two for $20" runs out, I will not buy a membership or class pass. It's just too expensive (drop in classes are $18!!) and I didn't leave there super excited about my experience. read more

$45 for a month's introductory offer is a good deal. They also offer many classes to suit different people's schedules. I liked the 7am pilates on Tuesdays and Thursdays taught by Katy, who is always energetic and precise in her instructions. The 7am Wednesday vinyasa class with Mimi is also a good one - one of the more rigorous classes Flow offers. I tried two full-led ashtanga classes on Monday afternoons as well. As a newbie to the style it was challenging, but not completely beyond my abilities so it was nice to have the instructor and assistant push me to new levels. Besides those, prana flow on Sunday afternoons is a good alternative. Plenty of consistent and smooth series of flow coupled with challenging arm balance poses. Besides these, though, I unfortunately did not find Flow a solid studio with solid teachers. It may well be because I didn't try out all the other classes since I only went for a month (although almost every single day during my trial period). There were a handful of classes where I found myself secretly wishing time would go faster. I do not understand why in a vinyasa class a teacher would tell students to do sets of squats and other cardio exercises. A few of the classes were also just way too watered down in terms of intensity (and they weren't labeled as "1.0" or "beginner" series). I would say pick your favorites once you've figured out which classes you like; so far I've found them a bit uneven in terms of quality here. read more

I've been a devotee of Flow for the last twelve years or so, with a five-year hiatus while I was living on Capitol Hill. It's a wonderful studio. The classes are rigorous and the practitioners are all serious about yoga. I'm always learning and pushing and improving at Flow, and I absolutely prefer it to any other studio in DC. There are many outstanding teachers offering a range of different styles, from Jiva to Rocket to Dharma, and it's a great bonus that the studio supplements these yoga classes with cardio options (Flow Fit or Pilates). I adore Mimi Reiger's classes because they are so exhausting, but there are many terrific instructors, including Cory Bryant, Jen Rene, Angela Cerkevich, Alicia Moyer, Sam Breschi and Chris Reber. My best advice to those interested in trying out Flow is that yoga newbies should probably be careful about taking intermediate classes. There is some instruction offered in them, but they aren't intended to teach the basics of a safe practice. If you are misaligned, you are extremely unlikely to get a correction in a class of 40+ practitioners. On the other hand, if you have a halfway strong practice, it can be really inspiring to learn from watching other, more advanced students in the class. I've tried a number of crazy modifications that I would never have thought to try out after watching someone next to me pull it off. On the downside, there are also occasionally some disrespectful practitioners (usually guys, let's face it) who will be falling out of headstands onto your mat or whacking you in the head with their feet. This is something that I've encountered more at Flow than at any other studio. You absoutely have to be able to tolerate a degree of crowding and chaos, so if that's a turnoff, I'd steer clear of the busier classes. It's also not a particularly friendly place. (I'm so surprised to read other reviews that say it is!) The staff are cheery, of course, but I rarely see people chatting and teachers will often actually instruct you to make eye contact with the person next to you at the beginning of class, because otherwise it wouldn't happen. There is a sense of community, but it's one that is definitely based on the routine of getting in, sweating and getting right on out. I've been practicing at Flow for the better part of a decade -- and I feel like it is my yoga home. But I'm always surprised when someone speaks to me hile I'm there. I don't mean that as a bad thing - but be forewarned that Flow is much chillier than other studios I've practiced at. This is a competitive not a supportive environment, and even I (former ballet dancer with 15+ years of yoga behind me) often feel a little intimidated. I wholeheartedly recommend Flow to anyone who's looking for a challenging practice and strong instruction without a lot of frills. read more

I'm not qualified to do yoga, much less review a yoga studio. But if you're just kind of curious about yoga, and one day stumble into Flow to try it out, you might find this review useful. Here's what not to do. Don't make your first attempt at yoga the "midnight yoga" course at Flow. It starts at like 10:30 PM and is supposed to go till midnight, but I swear it went on for seven hours with all the real yoga masters bending themselves silly. The instructor was very yoga-ey. He was wearing yoga pants and telling us about Shiva, the whole bit. Look, it wasn't for beginners and I was wrong, very wrong, to try. But there I was, at midnight on a Friday, with twenty of of the kind of people who go to Yoga studios at midnight on Fridays. It was my girlfriend's idea. In any case, we went back and tried a more normal, relaxed session led by a very nice instructor named Leticia, I think. Space is a problem in the studio, but people seemed amenable to moving around and adjusting. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty serious yoga place. As a complete yoga neophyte, I'd say it's hard to feel really comfortable. But in Flow's defense, I probably just took the wrong classes. And, in truth, I'm probably just lousy at yoga. So really, I'd give Flow four stars as a serious Yoga place, but I'd award myself 2 stars as a yoga flop. So that averages to three. Namaste. read more

The studio is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of a small row house. The lounge area is decorated very nicely with a middle eastern feel with fabric and lamps. Inside one of the classrooms is a pretty purple wall with a painting on it, candles are always burning. Animal cookies and Teaism tea is offered which is a nice touch, grapes on the weekend. The owner Ian is very welcoming and the front desk staff have all been friendly. The customer service here is top notch, they resolve any problems you have, going above and beyond. The mats thay have for rental are Jade which is just amazing and it's only $1. The teachers comment that they recognize the usual faces or see new ones, I've noticed there is a regular following. They have really interesting workshops and bring all the yoga celebs to town. Here's a review of my favorite teachers: Kathy Judd teaches an amazing Jivamukti class! Normally in yoga class I'm thinking to myself "when is this going to end" but hers flows so nicely it just goes by so fast. She teaches very alignment based which I liked. Gopi teaches a very unique style of yoga that I have never had before that was just so incredible! She teaches in the flowy style as Shiva Rea who by the way Flow had come visit! Gail teaches a vigorous ashtanga class and walks around to make sure every student is encouraged to get all the postures because let me tell you I felt like quitting many times during her class. Brittanie teaches a challenging flow class and is always telling us to be nice to one another. I definitely work up a sweat in her class! Some things I didn't like: Not a fan of the fact that men don't have to wear shirts here. I hated taking classes in the Shakti studio, they fit 12 mats in the tiniest room so there literally was only 2 inches between each mat. In the other 2 studios they have the class split in half facing each other so the instructor doesn't usually have space to practice along with you. It also means you are staring right into someone else's eyes a foot away from you as you practice. I have to say that the overcrowding issue really does put a damper on my experience here. Their business motto is "we need to find a way to up the numbers for this class" when all the classes during evening rush hour are already full. read more

Flow Yoga would be an easy 4 stars for me if it didn't lose a whole one over its cost-prohibitive class prices. I went here just about every day for an entire month when I bought their $50 unlimited yoga new member pass. I loved the wide variety of classes, the knowledgeable and kind instructors, and the clean studios. In particular I became a huge fan of Pilates on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Brittany, who was absolutely delightful. But at the end of the one month unlimited, the price completely skyrockets. That first month is in no way reflective of what it actually costs to buy a package here. A normal one month unlimited pass is $142, or you can get 20 classes for $245. Considering I also belong to the very spendy Vida Fitness across the street, there is no way to afford both. A single class at $16.50 is doable on occasion, but I still have a hard time justifying it. I am new to ClassPass and new to Flow Yoga Center-- and so far this is the friendliest studio I've been too in my quest to try out all the different yoga studios in the DC/VA area. First, be sure you are going to the right location. There is one on P street and also one on 14th street. Secondly, there is a first time free mat and towel rental which was greatly appreciated so I didn't have to lug my mat around town. I went to a class on the 14th street location and I appreciated the various cubbies where you can place your belongings (outside the room and inside the room). Also, the instructor and staff were overall very friendly and showed me where things were, offered me tea/animal cookies and gave me a brief overview of the studio. I understand that with ClassPass you get a lot of new clientele (some of which may not be consistent clientele) but it's still important to let people know they are welcomed and to give them a brief intro to the studio including layout (bathroom, cubbies, etc). I appreciated them taking the time (as compared to other places that assume you should just know where everything is) and will definitely be back to try other classes. read more

Great yoga classes, unless you go after work hours or on the weekends. Extremely expensive and full of pretentiously stressed out and arrogant people. Love the cushions, but you can't join unless you buy a $1,000 yearly pass or constantly put up with their nickel and diming you out of hundreds of dollars for classes which expire if you don't use them within a certain amount of time or cancel within 24 hours. Hi Debra, unless you have updated your policies in the last week, what you are telling me is the opposite of what your receptionists have told me multiple times. After going to flow yoga for a couple months and overall enjoying it, I recently had one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. I was dragged out of class not once but twice by a yoga teacher working the front desk. He told me I had a discrepancy with my account and needed to pay for a class I had not shown up to the night before. Umm what?! A. I had not been to flow yoga in 2 weeks B. I'm not aware that you can sign up for a class without paying for it online He proceeded to treat me like I was lying. On a Friday night after a long week at work, this is not how I wanted to spend my preclass moments. I had a terrible class, even though Mimi is one of the best I just couldn't shake how disrespectfully I've been treated. Bye flow yoga!! The "best yoga studio in DC" can feel like a yoga factory. It is unbelievable how crowded and busy that place can get in between classes. All that said, they have so many rooms and hidden spaces that it feels like a yoga labrynth. I took a yoga 2-3 level class with a dancer type guy. He was really into movement (shiva rea-esque). How lucky am I? So lucky that I live a 7 minute walk away from Flow. This means that I can roll out of bed at 6:30 and easily make it to one of their 7am classes. And I'm not a morning person. They are just that good! The first month $45 unlimited special is an amazing deal. And, if you sign up for 3 month membership before your month runs out, you get a special $90 rate. Worth it? If you go to 3+ classes per week, definitely! As some of the reviewers have mentioned, space is an issue. This is especially true for say, Mimi's cult-following 7am class that sometimes is completely full. 7 people in a row, inches away from someone else. It's only really awkward in standing wide-legged forward bend if people forget to stagger. Otherwise, you mostly get over it and just try and focus on your own practice! The teachers: there is something and someone for everyone! Just try a bunch of classes, find who you like, and stick with them! If you don't like one teacher (I personally was not a fan of a teacher playing MJ's thriller on repeat), there are so many other awesome options. Krista Block is one of my favorites. Her Jivamukti classes are challenging and playful, and she is encouraging and helps you get into advanced poses with great tips and demos. I also really like how she interweaves yogic philosophy and her own personal stories into the class. Time flies with her! I also really love the rhythmic, challenging Ashtanga full led primary with Gail Harris. My goal is to be able to do all of the poses by the end of the year and each week I improve, with Gail's helpful adjustments. She can be a little tough love sometimes, but you can tell that she really cares about her students. Brittanie DeChino's classes are like therapy for me. Her classes don't make me sweat as much as some others, but afterwards I feel like all of the tension and stress has left my body and often I've come to some great realization in savasana. She is a truly gifted teacher. I do also frequent Katy Stearns' Pilates classes. She is so bubbly and supportive. It's a great alternative to yoga if you're feeling sore or tired. I'm obsessed with flow and their teachers! It's added such a great element to my life in DC. Highly recommended if you are serious (or want to get serious) about yoga. read more

I feel mixed about this studio. I definitely think they have the best workshops in town - they bring in some of the best yoga teachers in the world. My absolute favorite yoga teacher in the world teaches here when she's in town (I cried when she moved out of DC). Their waiting area is really nice, super comfy. Their classes are always SO crowded though. Every single class and workshop I've taken here have mats touching it's so packed. It is an intimidating crowd too and not a super friendly atmosphere. I would only recommend checking out if you are a super serious yogi looking to train with some of the best. It's not great if you're looking for a chill atmosphere to practice. read more

Gail's Ashtanga class First, I did yoga for a semester in high school. I had not done yoga since and my 10 year reunion is later this month. Now that you've done the math, you can tell that I have no business doing a high level yoga class. But I'm ballsy and my friend invited me so I went for it. This is an intense class. 1.5 hours of sweating and posing and struggling offered three days a week. But it's so worth it and each class you'll get better and better and the support you get from Gail, the instructor, and Todd, her assistant, is incredibly motivating. The studio/center itself is small, busy and expensive. Granted I've never been to another studio, but with all it's flaws, Flow is welcoming and not intimidating. That's worth a lot to an awkward, self-conscious, non-yogi. Their $$$ and reservation policy keeps me in check and makes me motivated to regularly attend class. If you miss one it's not the end of the world, I like that they cut you slack if you have a few no-shows or if you're late for a class. I'm three months in, and maybe I'm not a full convert yet, but I think the reason I've stuck around is because of how great Gail's class is. If you're on the fence, definitely give her's a try, it's worth the price! read more

This place is a delight. The client base seems very loyal, the waiting area is super cozy (with complimentary cookies and wonderful free tea from Teaism!), and the instructors are great. I have been doing yoga for ten years but never very seriously, and Gopi's classes made me seriously consider going on a yoga retreat--something I never thought would interest me. I also love that there are frequent Pilates classes. Flow Fit, a cardio class with weights, is also an awesome and serious workout. If Flow had a few more classes like that per week, it could serve as your sole gym membership. This is the best yoga studio I've seen in my four years in DC, though I've enjoyed some other good ones. read more

I did the one month intro trial for new members. Overall, it's a great yoga studio. The spaces are really nice and open. In most classes I went to there was a teacher and an assistant, allowing for lots of hands-on help to get into proper positioning. It's definitely more of a serious yoga place, as even the intermediate classes seemed full of pretty advanced people. The only downside is the price. I think $19/class is a bit much. The multi-class passes don't decrease the price very much either. Yoga District up the street is only $11 per class, even without a multi-class pass. It's not quite as fancy, but it definitely works. read more

During my vacation this year I decided to stay Districted... It turned out to be a great decision, partly thanks to this haven of a community. Flow became my first encounter with the world of Yoga/Pilates. It turned out to be love at first try. The employees at the front desk really do anything they can to make you feel comfortable, and everyone is super helpful. ex: Coreen and Tori All the teachers are very encouraging, supportive, and patient. During each class I received plenty of support and adjustment. ex: Leah, Joan, Jenn, Juliet, Megan, Rob, Greg... The center also offers lots of workshops/information sessions to further your understanding and appreciation of what yoga is all about. It really is a great community. read more

Decided it was time to re-review Flow after a wonderful experience there today with Rob Hess on a lovely little birthday class for me. Flow can be the best studio ever as long as you go when it's not too crowded. (Generally anytime but 5-7pm on weekdays.) Daytime classes during the week are really wonderful! Rob, Gopi, Leticia and Johanna all have a really lovely, flowing style of yoga that is hard to fins at any other studio. I don't recommend the Pilates for beginners b/c there isn't much instruction. The downsides are the crowds and the price. They do have an amazing new intro deal though, which is the same as Tranquil Space and one of the best in the area - $50 for a month unlimited. This is such a good deal for people new to yoga because Flow has such a huge cariety of classes so you can see what you like and experiment. read more

I'll quote another reviewer by saying that Flow has the x-factor. I'm not sure what it is, but they've managed to outdo the other studios I've been to in DC. As soon as I walk in the door I just feel better because I know that I will have a great class and can let go of whatever the day has dealt me. Yes, it's crowded at times and the stairwell is narrow. In the end though, those things don't matter to me. I even kind of like the crowded classes sometimes because it feels more like a community of people working together rather than me alone on my mat...it also adds a sense of humor to things. And in my experience, for all of the reviewers referring to a teacher being rude, abrasive or insulting, I think these people are all referring to the same 1-2 instructors. So just know if you end up thinking that way at the end of your class, you need to come back and try a different person - there are so many instructors here! You won't regret the second chance, I promise. I've been coming to Flow for months now and would absolutely recommend it to everyone. read more

Flow is in a great location, with amazing teachers. The space gets pretty packed during evening and Saturday morning classes. Try and sign up on line to make sure you get a spot. Be aware that your new member classes will expire if they aren't used promptly--kind of sucks. I wish they would change that! read more
