Finding the right yoga studio when you're traveling can be a challenge, but we got it right when we found Yoga Community on a recent visit to Sonoma... Located super close to the Sonoma Square, this studio was easy to find, convenient to drop-into, and provided us exactly the flow class we needed. I went on a Sunday morning and my husband actually went on Saturday and Sunday. The class was challenging, instructor was attentive and motivating, and the energy in the class was super positive. They also have mats, blocks, blankets, etc... and the studio and bathrooms are clean. (Sadly, that isn't always the case). I loved my experience at this studio! I've attended both weekly classes as well as workshop offerings here, and adored the high quality instruction and the down-to-earth, friendly vibe of their team. This place is absolutely amazing. Sonoma County is a county full of love, health and world famous healers; this community is more or less a hub for all of this. From here I sought the help of an old friend Lisa who is now the owner of this community for a really sick family member of mine. The genuine care, networking of local healers and effectiveness of them was really amazing. I knew to come here only because Lisa did such a great job with me 8 years ago when I lived in Sonoma with my family member. She is an amazing yogi! Thank you Lisa and Susie!!!! I have enjoyed Yoga since 1995 and found this gem in Sonoma to offer so much for a little price. In my first time there, they were warm, inviting and very helpful. They have a great set up for changing before and after class, the yoga studio is large, the floor and room was nice and toasty, the music volume was not invasive but subtle and serene. I came on a Friday night " Five Dollar Friday Flow" and they had all the props, straps and everything you need, so it was SUCH a good deal. The store has clever gifts and nice clothing, with comfortable seating and I never felt rushed! Lorraine led the class beautifully and she had a kind, caring vibe that made the class even more relaxing. I hear good things about the other eclectic and energetic teachers here also! Update: I had to remove a star because of excessive touching in class. I was completely bent over with the top of my head on the floor and the instructor (Barbra) came up behind me and pressed her pubic area against my pubic area and put her hands on the small of my back for at least TWO MINUTES!!! Why do yoga teachers think that it's okay to do this? She wasn't "helping" me. I always feel as though I've been molested in yoga classes! Stop the groping, folks!!! Another problem: one class is talky-talky for the whole hour! The instructor (Carol) acts like a stand-up comedian and tries to joke around excessively and asking personal questions nonstop. I can't get myself to return here even though I love yoga. read more

I just started doing prenatal yoga at Yoga Community, and I absolutely love it. The studio is clean and beautiful, and they provide all of the mats, accessories, blankets, straps, etc.. you'll need for the class. The instructor, Kate, is wonderful, too. I look forward to checking out the restorative yoga class on Sunday evenings. Bonus: they have a fantastic gift shop, where I got an adorable onesy (sp?) featuring a golden Hotei Buddha on the front. read more

Get your stretch on and go to Yoga community! This is one of the top yoga solons in 4 counties. The owners created a warm environment in this strip mall setting. It's a friendly niche in a busy world. The teachers are attentive to the students needs and each instructor takes the time to modify movements for those of us who are less flexible or suffer from previous injuries. The basic classes are made challenging for the not-so-beginner when the instructors preview variations on each pose. In one morning class we hoisted each other into a back bend with ropes and pullies - just kidding. But the partner stretching is a nice addition. There are no mirrors in the studio but the beautiful wooden floor is serene and generous. All supplies are provided including hand towels and hand sanitizer. There are even multiple restrooms and a sitting area in the waiting area. Yoga community is automated and you can reserve your classes on line and check in with your personalized key chain key card. I attended a meditation workshop that was excellent - the suggestions from the workshop were powerful and energizing. This workshop gave me a new direction in my yoga/meditation regime. I would recommend this location fas one of the better yoga salons in the area. The yoga lover will enjoy it. read more

I have exercised in a number of gyms throughout the country, and when it comes to cardio machines, free weights and group classes, I've pretty much seen them all. Yoga is an entirely different sub-culture of truly avid enthusiasts whose teachings often reach deeper than a surface "work out." That is why I have participated in such a limited number of yoga classes that I have actually enjoyed. When a friend of mine invited me to take a Vinyasa Yoga class at Yoga Community in Sonoma, I was excited to try a new place and a new teacher...and I'm glad I did! This yoga studio is right off the main road that heads through Sonoma and you'd almost miss it if you didn't know it was there. Inside, a beautiful space welcomes you, complete with plush pillows that look as though they were imported from India, merchandise for your true Yogi at heart, and several rooms where classes are held. The receptionists are sweet, and it was clear this place has regulars, because the receptionist working that Saturday morning knew everyone who walked through the door. I was a first-time visitor, so I had to pay for my individual class, and the price was kind of a shock ($15 for one 90-minute class), but they do offer packages if you want to purchase future visits at a premium. Lisa was the instructor for our class that day and taught an empowering Vinyasa Yoga class that highlighted the importance of connecting breath and movements. Throughout the session, she provided alternative movements for all levels, and didn't make the stretches too intimidating or complicated. If the price wasn't so steep, I'd probably go more often, but otherwise, a great experience. Nice community yoga studio, friendly people, variety of class times and teaching styles. I have found the instruction to be supportive and constructive. Mostly older attendees, some high-level yoga practitioners. Sometimes noisy as different classes are entering and exiting the building, and chatting outside the doors. I have benefited from the drop in classes and the multi class options for my episodic attendance. Air-conditioning is nice when needed in the summer months. All props are provided when necessary. read more

As with most yoga studios, you'll find that you enjoy some classes more than others. I definitely have my favorites here too. But overall, I've had great experiences. Do get here at least 15-20 minutes early for any class on the weekends if you want a good spot to put your mat. Love Julie's class. That is a work out and a half! And she doesn't make you feel incompetent :-) I wish I could go more often than I actually do but I work full time during the week so it's hard. Will try to make more weekend classes! read more

Been an avid fan of Yoga Community for over six months - ever since moving to Sonoma. The studio is well kept, nicely designed and welcoming. Lisa, the owner has done a fab job! I typically go to the 7 am class with Sofi - Mon / Wed / Fri - enjoy other classes as time and schedule permit and have especially enjoyed classes taught by Julia, Lisa & Barbara. Sofi's class is great and she understands how to include all skill levels. When starting there I had a shoulder injury with limited range of motion and pain. However taking Sofi's classes have made a world of difference and I'm back 100%. Her style is lighthearted & inclusive. She provides alternatives for varying skill level. It's amazing to see how those of us coming regularly find ourselves in headstands and in all kinds of pretzel shapes that we never imagined possible. Sofi understands how to translate technique into form and encourage us to deepen our practice without pressure. read more

The boutique has all kinds of cute stuff, including yoga clothes and lovely cards featuring photos of Sonoma County. Very relaxing and physically rejuvenating classes at a variety of times, all week. It's sometimes difficult to find a spiritual community in small towns. Just moving to Sonoma, Yoga community was my yogi salvation. They offer a variety of classes. The teachers are well educated and many blend traditional eastern yoga with western. It's also easy to become apart of the community. If you cant afford yoga, they offer Karma yoga. Working a shift in exchange for free classes and discounts on merchandise. Which is amazing for any Yogi on a budget. The atmosphere is also very welcoming and homey. I've tried other yoga studios in Sonoma and this one has the best selection of classes. There are some 30+ classes per week, and it's really cozy in there. I'm not a big exerciser, but it's so easy when all you have to do is arrive to class. The classes are really small, too so I had room to move. Also, after classes people sit around, chat, and have tea in a really cute seating area. When I travel I go to different yoga studios, and this one definitely compares well considering class size, communityness, and different types of classes. I found Yoga Community while doing a Google search for private, on location yoga classes. We had Jes come out the morning of my wedding to lead a flow class for the bridesmaids and our moms. She brought all of the mats and props that we would need and provided music too. The class was great! We all felt so relaxed the entire day and my mom even wants to take up practicing yoga! I started going to this studio a couple of years ago when I wanted to move on from DVDs and crowded gym yoga classes. Here you can get individual attention and instruction on how to correctlly do poses so you don't injure yourselves and the small class size really does contribute to a community experience. The schedule is adaptive with lots of class options/times and you can learn a lot from the different instructors and teaching styles. read more

I teach at this studio occasionally. I also attend classes there when I am in town. Here's my review: Yoga community has really kind, well-trained teachers-primarily in the tradition of Rod Stryker (Tantric Hatha Yoga)- and Jon Friend (Anusara). There are warm and friendly classes for beginners, to more advanced integrated classes with pranayama and meditation. SOME but not alot of Ashtanga style vigorous vinyasa practice- and a new favorite-- deep yin style restorative classes. Basically- there are classes and teachers to suit every style and level. The 2 studios are beautiful, with Bamboo floors, great lighting, wonderful ambience. The studio gets world renowned workshop leaders- like Mark Whitwell and the Acroyoga people, as well as local lecturers like Doug Brozell. Barbra is a great teacher- with deep knowledge- her classes include some dharma talks and meditation as well as good strong asana. Melanie King integrates a lot of Paul Grilley/Sarah Powers information on anatomy and the right yoga for your body type- she is a gentle teacher. Carol is more chatty- her asana teaching is right on point. Some other experienced and new teachers this year- like Len G- people are really liking his classes, too. It is just what it says- a Community. People care about each other here and are accepting and curious and generous. read more

Yoga Community is exactly what it says it is--a community of people who will take you in. And when they take you in, they teach you and grow with you, no matter what your (ever-changing) experience of yoga is. Maybe you're just starting yoga, but feel like you might be "bad" at it, because you're not very flexible or strong. Or maybe your cousin's ex-boyfriend's brother used to do yoga, and you've always been looking for the right time and place to start. Perhaps you use yoga as physical therapy to iron out the aches and twangs of pain in your back or neck. Or yoga for you means a lean and muscular body. ....Or perhaps your experience of yoga has helped you find and define the boundaries, joys, and growth of your own body. And you're beginning to experience that yoga means union. Yoga means a lot to different people, and you will find all of it at Yoga Community. With about 33 classes per week and workshops on top of that, there's a class for every body. Come here with an open mind, patience, and a bit of commitment. Try out different classes until you find a teacher or two you really relate to. And then go for it. The community aspect of yoga makes getting fit, and getting closer to your self as easy as hopping in your car/bike and just getting there. Then the yoga practice and the beautiful people do the rest. (Also, in response to being touched in yoga classes--there are two effective ways to get around this: telling the teacher beforehand you don't like to be adjusted, and finding a teacher whose teaching style suits you well. No need to dislike a yoga studio because of one teacher.) read more

Yoga Community in Sonoma is great from the perspective of the space, the teachers, the staff and the class schedule. Very highly recommended. I have given it only 3 stars because of the inflexible policy on refunds. My partner bought me a full year membership, accepting that there would be no refund for any unused portion. We unexpectedly had to move away from Sonoma for work after I had done maybe 10 - 15 classes over about 4 months. We had hoped that they would understand that we had no control over this and we were not expecting a full refund of the unused portion, but were at least hoping for a token refund. They denied any refund, which they were perfectly within their rights to do; but, as a result, I would strongly recommend to anyone thinking of joining not to take out a long term membership. read more

The Director Carol---carrying on the tradition of the original founder-- has brought together under one roof many resources with the variety of teachers ongoing, and occasional workshops.
