While out grocery shopping, my husband turned to me and said, "Do you want a donut?"…read more Magic words to my ears, as I'm ALWAYS in the mood for a good donut. Only problem - nothing at the grocery store looked tempting enough to waste an entire week of dieting and exercise for. We ran a couple more errands, but neither of us could shake the idea of a mouthwatering pastry one can only find at a small-town, mom-and-pop bakery. And if you don't agree with me, I'm not sure you've ever been to Smurawa's, Bult's Bakery in Shawano, or Linda's Town & Country Bakery in Birnamwood. But I digress. Anywho, my husband recalled the pillowy, chewy paczkis we got from Maplewood Meats, courtesy of Smurawa's. But for a craving this bad, we knew we needed to go to the source and forego the supplier. And we only had half an hour to get there. We walked in with 15 minutes to spare. The gal behind the counter (Amara) made us feel like we had all the time in the world. There weren't many paczkis in the case, but Amara informed us she had empty pastries in the back and she could fill them with just about any flavor we wanted, and it would only take 10 minutes for her to fill them. We ordered one of each of the following: Cherry, raspberry, French cream, peanut butter cream, chocolate cream, custard and cream cheese. She gave us the option of coating with powdered sugar or granulated. We chose powdered. So we bought (though all were amazing, I've listed my favorites starting from the most) a kneecap, a glazed croissant, apple fritter, Danish krispie and banana cheesecake chimichanga. And we devoured them all! Huge shoutout to Amara for being quick, witty, helpful and so sweet. I had to practically drag my husband out of there. Needless to say, we'll be back again soon!

Went in to get two dozen kneecaps today. And the little dark haired gal bit my head off-DID YOU…read morePLACE AN ORDER? Ummm no was I supposed to? SHE POINTED TO THE CASEthat's all we have left. Ok well I will take those. She snapped back next time place an order. Excuse me??? ANOTHER LADY CUSTOMER LOOKED AT ME AND SAID WOW WHAT A BAD ATTITUDE. Yup sure has a terrible attitude. If this was not for a special family breakfast tomorrow I might have walked out AFTER SHE BOXED THEM UP. DANG NOW I WISH I WOULD HAVE. Terrible customer service. Merry Christmas to you tootles with the dark hair. Feel bad for the owner having such sucky help.

Since this was our first visit, we went inside to order, and every staff member went above and beyond to help us understand their coffee and pastry options. They explained how their drinks have more of a true coffee flavor and helped me customize mine by reducing the number of espresso shots to achieve the lighter, sweeter, fluffier taste I prefer. I ended up with a medium seasonal drink featuring brown sugar and caramel, made with just one shot of espresso which was delicious. The scones were the best I've had. We tried the lemon, java chip, and pumpkin flavors, along with a pecan roll. The lemon and java chip were our personal favorites. You can tell this place is a local gem--while waiting in line, regulars shared their top picks, and the lemon blueberry scone was a top recommendation. The interior is just for ordering, but there are outdoor tables available. Most customers seem to use the drive-thru, which keeps things moving smoothly. We're looking forward to our next visit to the Green Bay area to try more flavors.
