I just had my first perm ever with Simon and he was incredible! He started by asking me if I had any photos to use as a reference and talked me through my options of a digital perm which would have been 3-4 hours versus a regular perm which would have been 2 hours for my hair type (thick, straight hair). He then also suggested cutting layers and gave me a really nice haircut before getting into the perm. As for the perm, I opted for the standard perm which was a 2 hour process and I was totally comfortable the entire time. I had solution in my hair, rinsed, more solution; and then one more rinse and a quick blow dry with the diffuser. (I love the Milbon product he used for my new curls, smells great!) The haircut + perm before tip came out to $310! read more

After ten years of searching for a good hairstylist in the Bay, i have finally found "the one". I have rotated through so many salons, including very very high end ones, but nobody understands my Asian hair like Helen. She was able to tell me what haircuts wouldn't work on me, and how to modify them for my hair type. She gave me the only short haircut that has ever looked good on me (regular haircuts make my coarse wavy asian hair look like poofy triangles). I will definitely be sticking with Helen!!! read more

I came for a mens perm and could not be happier with my results. Joanne treated me and was super professional and did an amazing job achieving the look I was aiming for. She was super friendly, didn't over-talk or under-talk during the appointment. I have very difficult hair to perm and was told this by my last stylist. Let's be real, I know I'm a difficult client since I like my hair a very certain way and have major trust issues when it comes to hairstylist due to complications in the past. I haven't had my hair trimmed in YEARS since it's so hard for me to find a stylist that I can truly trust. My sister actually had an appointment with helen for a cut but wasn't able to make her session and ended up giving me her spot and I decided to go on a whim since I was so overdue for a trim. The salon is really kind of small but still very cute and welcoming. Parking was a little hard for me but I'm guessing it was just the time of day that I went. Update - I appreciate the fact that the business and Helen spent the time to respond. However, how she responded mystifies me. I'm not quite sure how she could manage to miss the point entirely. Having had my hair professional cut and colored for over 30 years, I'm very accustomed to the practice of having a consult before every appointment. I'm not quite sure why Helen is now suggesting that this was unclear to me. I came to each appointment prepared with photos of what I wanted, bringing examples of the bob that I've had for decades, as well as the blonde shade that I'd had previously. Helen, what was surprising was how you ignored my input at both appointments, saying that a bob wouldn't work for my hair and insisting I needed a warm blonde because I had hazel eyes. (?) Despite the fact that we were both looking at old photos of me in which 1. I had a great looking bob and 2. cool blonde hair. We spent more than 1/2 hour at each appointment trying to get on the same page. Helen, you pushed forward your own agenda, insisting that you knew best, quoting an outlandish price which you justified by saying you were a top tier stylist and that you *guaranteed* that I'd love it. Why I'm frustrated is that you have me a mall-quality cut, overprocessed my hair, overcharged me, then tried to gaslight me, rather than admit that you f*cked up. In terms of the allergic reaction, at first I thought it was due to the products you recommended, however, when I noticed chemical burns on my hands and arms in addition to my face and neck, I realized it was caused by bleach. This happened when you overstimated the time needed to lift my color during processing, again despite my explicitly warning you that my hair took bleach and color quickly. You came back to check my hair, realized that it was lightening faster than you expected, and started yanking the foils out as quickly as you could. In doing so, you sprayed bleach on my hands, arms, face, neck and ears. If you recall, I had to ask you for a towel to wipe it off because it was burning my skin. What's mind-boggling to me given all the above is that at no point have you actually apologized - either in our text exchange or in this reponse to my review. After all the promises you made during both consults, I would expect you to stand by your word and do more than offer a massage and conditioning treatment given the damage done. I've already gone to another salon to fix the cut and color you gave me, and in any case, it's clear I won't be coming back to YoYo Salon ever again. read more

I'm so thrilled to have finally found a new stylist--mine moved from San Francisco about 18 months ago, and Helen is the 4th stylist I've tried. She listened to my wishes and concerns, and took her time asking questions as she cut and colored. She asked to see various pictures of my hair inspo and dug into why I liked them. It was nice to work with a stylist who doesn't make assumptions and really works to understand what you're looking for.
