YMCA of Ashland - Great day for a great hat!! - Gyms Near Me - Ashland, Oregon

This YMCA has a very strict visitor policy. You can pay $20 for a 1-day pass. I agree with fellow yelpers that some of the front desk staff could work on customer service. The older lady with short dark hair and glasses who is usually at the front counter is quite gruff and not very personable. I just had an easy question, but before I even asked, she acted like I was going to be a problem *she must be stressed out* I have to agree with the other yelper "T" regarding the various classes that they offer *not great*. The classes have gone significantly DOWN HILL in the recent years. The majority of the instructors are meh and I wouldn't waste any time trying out any of the yoga/pilates classes. They are jam packed (overlapping mats in some cases) and they STILL don't have a limit to the number of attendees like other gyms do. Lots of machines and workout spaces, free weights located throughout the expansive space. The senior community seems to clear out by around 12 noon. Come then if you need to utilize the machines. The senior community tend to treat the gym like a social event and sit and lean on the machines for hours at a time, not actually working out, just yapping and taking up space. Nice that they have a year round indoor pool for laps and swim lessons. The POOL CLOSES 30 MIN before the gym closes. Good for Families with kids. They have lots of summer camps to choose from. The women's steam room (inside the locker room) is small (2-3 people max). I like that it's women only. read more

Been coming here for 26 years. My children used their childcare program and helped us save money when we were younger. Also enjoyed their football and soccer programs for children. I've been swimming in the somewhat "warm" pool for 25 years, but have gradually adjusted. Sometimes one has to share a lane with other members, but learning to be social and share is healthy for adults too. The exercise equipment has been modernized over the years and continues to meet my needs. Hours are good: this Y is open on Sundays whereas many of them elsewhere are closed. read more

I have been a dues paying member of the YMCA since 2016. I am very disappointed by the lack of communication from the YMCA to its members. There is no newsletter, no annual meeting, no community involvement. At the moment, notices about new programs and other important information is posted on small pieces of paper on bulletin boards around the Y. That information, as well as info about all Y programs and future plans should be included in a newsletter to members. For example, yesterday I saw a small sign at the front desk that noted that the pool will be closed for ten days in January. If I had been traveling in December and hadn't visited the Y recently, I would not have known about the closure. These are not the dark ages--The Y should be communicating important information electronically. It is an embarrassment that they do not! The only communication I've had from the Y lately was a postcard listing increased rates--no explanation about why that was necessary, and no input from the "members". The Y could be so much better and a more involved entity of the Ashland community. Such a shame that it isn't! read more

Mean front desk and prohibitive guest policy . Tried to go this YMCA On Mother's Day. We were told that out of state guests are limited to 6 times a year. I don't mind paying a guest fee, but this place won't even let me access their facilities more than 6 times a year! What if I visit my mom more than once a year! Seems un aligned with professed family values. I can pay a guest fee at any other gym but this YMCA is the only place that won't let me workout with my mom even if I pay!!! Not nice... gym is actually not bad, its pretty clean overall. swim area is nice, however is basically a bathroom for kids. this is my problem with this place: the weird volleyball tuesdays/thursdays my daughter and her friend would attend are subpar and the community is horrible. the adults think they own it and will literally kick you out of their game if you're not good enough even though you paid. you're 50 years old telling 12-16 year olds to leave or that you're having an "adults only game". if they wanted to sit in a corner and do nothing after paying they'd throw 8 dollars away and do that at home. you don't own the facility and they're kids. get a grip. read more

We LOVE the Y, and especially the pool. As members since we moved to Ashland 5 years ago, we've been regular pool users every week as long as it is open. The staff has taken the time to get to know our two daughters, and to support them through the challenges of learning to swim and growing. The aquatics director, Chad, is always open and available to listen to and answer any of our questions (which has been many over the years!), and to work with us to accommodate our daughters in lessons. Safety is the number one priority at the Ashland YMCA pool and the pool staff is well trained and able to maintain a safe environment while keeping it fun! read more

This Y looks impressive as the facilities are expansive, clean, and generally in good shape. However, when you start attending classes, you quickly learn they are subpar. They do not pay instructors, who teach in exchange for free use of the facilities, and the quality of the classes is poor. It is difficult to get a good cardio workout in any of them aside from spin. They have a woman teaching Zumba who is extremely overweight and does not even move. The low-impact classes are similarly very low energy and you end up simply shuffling around. I understand that the population of Ashland is made up of retirees, but the situation here is beyond ridiculous. I'm over 60 and run half marathons and work out 2 hours a day. Members here need to get their heart rates up! Staff is not responsive to suggestions, requests, or even messages about broken equipment. The only decent class is a Zumba class taught by an instructor who is undocumented and donates his time! I really wonder how they can make so much money -- this is the wealthiest Y in the US -- and consistently offer such poor-quality instruction. The administration must be paying themselves big bucks, leaving little to run the place. I think this place survives because they have no competition. There are no good gyms or dance studios in Ashland. Maybe everyone who lives here is lazy -- I don't know! read more

This is my gym. The staff is friendly, clean, they've got great equipment, and superb Yoga classes. I travel a lot and appreciate that I can go to work out in other YMCAs without paying an extra fee. The YMCA in Ashland is the best one I've ever been to. read more

Gayle and I took a turn on the treadmills one day last week on a Guest Pass. We were in town for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and grabbed this opportunity to vary our exercise routine. We actually walked out here from the Railroad District the day before the check it out, before walking back the other way. YMCA staff were very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were clean, pleasant, and well run. We'll be back. read more

No precautions for Covid; kids camp teachers aren't wearing masks inside, they don't temp test like literally everywhere else. Asked for an exception to be made for my kids class, CEO doesn't care. I wouldn't send your kids here or attend unless you some have any at risk family for Covid. read more

They are terrible at reaching out to their members! I had some fees that they FAILED to communicate with me about. I have it set up where they automatically take my balance out of my bank account. The only reason I found out I had fees is because I went there to take my kids swimming, and was surprisingly met with this information. So I payed what they told me my balance was on the spot.. when the payment went through I was then met with more red caution tape, with them telling me my account was still coming up inactive.. huh?.. so I was then told it was in the process of being renewed and to wait for an email..(ok)...The one employee (supervisor/manager it seemed like) was nice enough to let my kids go in to swim, but then again I did just pay our balance..! The kid they had working there was dry and even rude at one point. Fast-forward to a few days later, I got an email from the insurance committee there saying they are not going to renew our membership at this time... And that was it.. very cut and dry. and here I just payed them! AND they had been taking payments out prior to this! I also have not gotten any communication from them prior to all this. Apparently they say they tried to email me, but I never received any emails.. so, if they didn't get through to me by email (because obviously they did not get a response back), why not call? Send a letter? They have my address and number on file. We weren't using our membership that much due to the pandemic, you'd think that'd be obvious to them... And I had no idea we could have put our membership on a hold..? And that's because they did a great job at reaching out to me to let me know, Or communicate anything to me for that matter! 1.) They did not properly communicate to me that I had fees, 2.) they did not reach out to us to let us know we could have put our membership on a hold. 3.) They also did not communicate to me that they closed our membership. And in their emails back and forth to me (AFTER the fact), they sounded completely unsufferable and dismissive... I am really into saunas and hot tubbing. Was in the neighborhood and decided to visit the YMCA. Went in for a soak and was astonished and flabbergasted they wanted TWENTY DOLLARS for a day pass!! :( I can honestly say I'll never again visit the YMCA, ever. I called up Jackson Wellsprings and I was delighted to hear that if I buy a ten-punch card it costs $75, meaning that each visit is only $7.50 =) Not to mention the soaking facilities are far nicer than the dingy little Y. Less crowded most of the time too. Jackson Wellsprings is where it's at. read more

This YMCA is a total mess on so many different levels. Most of the classes are sub par, examples theirzumba class you just walk backwards for 20 counts and most of their yoga classes are simple stretching. I was still going to their Spin class, then they changed it to only being on weekdays in the morning, so people who work can't go. So, I started using their equipment and watching my ipad, now their wi-fi never works, and the staff just rudely say we are having connectivity issues..... well that's acceptable every once in a while but lately it seems they are always have "connectivity issues." It feels like that no matter how hard I try to make the YMCA work they come up short. I continued paying my membership through covid when we couldn't even use the gym, and now they are "open," but they have few quality classes at times I can attend, and their wi-fi never works. read more

I am really surprised by this YMCA. Granted, it's the only YMCA I've ever joined and been a part of, but I like it a lot. They give a discount if you have a certain health insurance, and I do, so I joined for a whopping 13.50 per month! And I guess I can use pretty much any facilities in the building! I recently got out of a very long term depressive state and now am wanting to get back into body building, and now I'm able to do that without worrying about being completely broke by the 20th of the month. The staff there are also super nice people. I love when I walk in and am greeted by name when I walk by the counter. I haven't checked out ALL of what they have; I really just use the gym part. But everything is always pretty tidy and clean, but that's also because the members seem to know how to clean up after themselves... They have tons of lockers available in the bathrooms (where you bring your own lock) and lockers just outside for temporary use that you use a pin number for. Overall, I'm really glad I decided to join here, and regret not coming here years ago when I moved to this area! *Almost forgot, the one bad thing about this place is the parking. This is where ALL OF ASHLAND comes to do stuff so there is never parking anywhere, mostly in the morning. So, be prepared for driving around or parking on the street somewhere and walking for a bit. read more

Terrific Y. We came as visitors from the bay area and they were helpful, courteous and welcoming.

There is a woman employee, short hair who's a trainer, by the name of Sherrie, who's turned the gym into the most ridiculous place. I wore workout pants, a cropped workout top, the usual workout attire worn by many at the gym, and was approached by her and immediately spoken to in a very aggressive manner. She told me that my outfit didn't comply with the Y rules-mind you, I've been a member for many years and have worn the same attire without any issues. She told me I could either wear a Y tee shirt or that I had to leave. I asked her if my attire was inappropriate, she said no, but wouldn't tell me exactly what the issue was. At this point she was getting really aggressive so I decided to leave, and she followed me out, asking me "why I had to make her job so difficult." I've never had such a weird and uncomfortable experience, and I've spoken to a few others at the gym that have had negative interactions with her as well. YMCA staff, you may want to at least speak to Sherrie and give her a lesson about appropriate customer interactions, because she clearly isn't savvy when it comes to dealing with people kindly. I saw a review that said the hours are the same, the hours are not the same. It really bothers me when places use covid-19 as an excuse to increase profits... They open late close early and there is no sauna any more and you have to schedule time for the pool. The hot tub is also closed a lot of the time. Please keep in mind a membership is over $40.00 a month... I used to love coming here :( read more

I enjoy the Pilates yoga classes. Great price to be able to take many classes per week. The salt water pool feels good. Grateful for the wood sauna. Lockers where you can lock them without having to bring a lock. Wish there was more Laplane time- hours keep changing so hard to remember. Welcome to all ages. Lots of classes for everyone. Discount prices for those with Oregon trail card. All inclusive, something for everyone. Bring the family or do your own thing: Weights or cardio, or classes or chair massage or dance. The facilities go on and on forever, so many workout rooms, dance/yoga studios. The pool rooms gag me, they need to open some windows and let the chlorine fumes out. They say their pool isn't treated with chlorine but the whirl pool is, and the fumes are unbearable. Really? can't ventilate the place with outside air? The weight rooms are great. All the weights and racks you can want. Plenty of lockers and amenities. Except one huge weakness, the crappy locker rooms. The women's locker room has a few dozen lockers, 2-3 benches, and a completely inadequate "bull-pen" shower room, no privacy just 3 walls of shower heads, like you would see in a mens' locker room. NO PRIVACY!! lookin' at body parts of strangers 2.5 feet away. It is a deterrent by design and is completely offensive. There is a direct connection between policy and architectural design. "We don't want you here taking showers, so we're going to make it small and completely un-private, go home sweaty and stinky!" I wonder how they can claim to be health-oriented, family-oriented, and all that other fluffy nonsense they put in their mission statement. Fat and ugly people are not welcome, only exhibitionists! Please if you know someone in management, let them know about this feedback, it really needs to be addressed. I know, they want to prohibit homeless people from taking advantage of the facilities, but come on! There must be dozens of women who don't join because of the crappy locker rooms. read more

I love the Ashland Y. Friendly people, lots of renovations done in the last few years, and the pool is great - its salt water so you get a little bouyancy and none of the chemicals. The Ashland Y is a great part of the community and a really enjoyable place to work out. read more

Very nice facility. Lots of strength training and cardio equipment. Most of it newer and kept in good condition. Lots of free weights in a fairly spacious area. Nice pool and jacuzzi. Staff is great. Friendly and helpful. Basketball court is first rate, new glass backboards. 3 or 4 extra rooms for classes, karate, yoga, etc. Extensive list of exercise classes. Pretty much something to offer for everybody. They also do a great job with youth sports programs. The only aspect of the Ashland Y that I feel is not first class are the locker rooms. It would be a nearly perfect facility if they had larger, nicer locker rooms. They have done a good job to upgrade what they have to work with, but they are a little cramped. It would probably take a massive construction effort to reconfigure them. Still, a great facility. 4.5 stars. read more

This ymca violates the very background of ymca. Young Men's Christian Association. It was originally to help people in need. The one in Ashland you have to be extremely privileged to afford their prices. It keeps getting more and more expensive. 15 or so years ago it was no more than 10 dollars to go swimming and use hot tube sauna etc. Was mislead and made to feel completely stupid. I signed up for gym with my health insurance, was given a weekly pass until the insurance worked it out with the Y and sent me a more permanent card. A couple days later I amped myself up for over and hour to go work out as I have serious anxiety and low self esteem only to be told my temporary card was invalid. And I couldn't work out. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I went back for a THIRD time only to be told I need a bank account or need to pay for six months in advance, I didn't have a bank account nor could afford six months in advance. Thanks for making me feel like a complete idiot. Like really? That's how you treat someone who isn't as well off as a retired millionaire? Go to Medford and find a gym there. Or better yet go to the Y in Medford, it may not be as big but at least they have the values of the Y. Also parking lot is a hell hole. Good luck finding a spot. read more

The Ashland YMCA is a complete joke... Yes I understand it is Ashland (I was born and raised here) although if you lift weights seriously this isn't the place for you. This place has turned into a retirement home. Furthermore, members pay $39.99 a month to go to yoga once a week on Sundays and to drown the sauna in eucalyptus oil. More power to them, but when i'm trying to lift and barefooted individuals are walking around saying "those weights are kind of loud, there is a preschool underneath you..." it is bothersome. Really? A preschool underneath the free weights... In detail, unless you're fond of a constant and profound aroma of eucalyptus with an overwhelmingly large gap in age all while your interests solely remain in Sunday yoga and you don't enjoy actual training this isn't the place for you. read more

I quit my membership because I work 9 to 5 and prefer the fitness classes. The classes are slim to none after five and on weekends. The classes they do have, the instructors are unreliable and flaky, canceling or not showing up. I don't know how to use half the exercise equipment, I feel overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. I'm not going to pay extra just to be given guidance. Also I need motivation, which is why I like the classes. If I'm going to pay a bunch of money for a gym, I'm going to Cross Fit to get my money's worth. read more

I had the most belittling experience with Ana Lisa today! I inquired about a scholarship for aftercare for children and she started lecturing me about my "responsibilities" and didn't even answer my questions! This is not the first time I've felt sub-human due to her scrutiny and rude behavior. She humiliated me , talking loud enough that everyone could hear that I'm a scholarship recipient, therefore making my income level a public issue. It's infact the 3rd time I've felt unwelcome at the Y due to Ana Lisa's inability to communicate effectively. I filled out a complaint however I know she's probably the one who reads them. This place needs to revamp its member services starting with hiring kind and helpful people. I have been a loyal member for years and I continue to be intimidated by Ana Lisa's condescending behavior. This must stop. read more

Billing issues: I received help from DHS to pay for 100% of the cost for 2 of my children's summer camps. Shirley, who is in the billing department, wrote me an email letting me know that I have a balance of $337 for the summer camps, saying that the state will only pay for the days in which the children were at camp, with no breakdown of the charges. The following day, Shirley wrote me an email letting me know that the charges were even higher, to the sum of $440 +, with no breakdown of the bill. I let the YMCA know that there were 3 occurrences in which I went to pick up my children & they hadn't had them checked as attending for the day & perhaps there are more than the 3 I caught. Upon contacting the state, I learned that DHS does indeed cover up to 5 absent days per child/month & that YMCA receives a discounted rate when the state pays, hence they would make more $ off of billing me. I left a message with Shirley's boss last week, & as of 3 business days later, heard nothing back. read more
