For his birthday, I took him to Clayroom for the try day class on Saturday and we had the best time. The class was easy to follow and they teach you step by step with a demonstration before everyone starts on their own projects. Our instructor was kind and so helpful with the little one. By the end, you get to keep 2 pieces that they help you glaze and fire. Ive never done wheel throwing before and happy that this was my first experience. We can't wait to see our finished pieces in a few weeks! Helpful note: the studio is pretty busy and it was difficult to get a response by phone. We ended up going in person to sign up for the class, but were told that email is best form of contact!

It gets amazing light and the refreshing and calming space puts you in a great mood. I felt very inspired just being inside. * I'm a beginner and I felt very comfortable trying new techniques and learning - everyone is kind, friendly and supportive, will answer and guide you if you have questions. * The glaze library is unreal!!! So many colors and hues - in addition to the board of colors, there's also dozens of WIP colors you can use as well. They're also constantly developing and adding new glazes to their library. I've been in an art school pottery studio and even they didn't have this many amazing glazes. * Depending on your commitment level, there are so many fun classes and options to choose from - I've tried one-time classes before and other places haven't let me keep my piece, let alone glaze and fire it for me like Hickory will! Also the fact that a member can bring a friend to try out the studio is wonderful. * After you take a one-time class, you can also do drop-in sessions in the studio without having to make a monthly commitment! The class and membership prices feel very fair and the different options / commitment levels mean you can easily find something that works for you. * The fact that they have multiple colors of clay available is amazing-- I've typically worked in studios that only have one option. The had really nice glazes with hansen clear being my fav! Hickory gradually became more expensive over time, and they started charging members a firing fee for larger items. Understandable, especially given the current economy. I experienced a few issues with my pots being mishandled. On one occasion, a kiln overheated, causing a large batch of my pieces to bubble. Handful of my pots were damaged during firing because some items were placed in the kiln before they were fully dried.

For a long time, I've made art but struggled with feeling like what I was doing was really creative. Michael, the owner and instructor at the studio, has transformed the way I think about the creative process through the avenue of figure drawing. His classes are the most meaningful part of my week. If you're looking for an instructional class focused on technique for drawing more accurately, this may not be the right place for you. Instead, the classes offer a new connected way of living--engaged with beauty both around you and internal to you. So much of the class is about unlearning not just how you draw but also how you value the creative process. It is the most challenging class I've ever taken and there's no amount of brute force I can apply to get it other than trusting the process and the instructor. Nonetheless, as frustrating as it is, there's nothing else I do that is more rewarding. It takes a lot of effort to strip away your aesthetic value system to get at the core of what you find beautiful, but if the result is a more meaningful existence, then that investment is priceless. Some practical aspects of the instructional sessions. Michael strives to provide only the best models to inspire you not to capture their poses but to feel something in yourself. The medium is stick charcoal and newsprint is available cheaply at the studio. The class is a lengthy commitment of 20 weeks of three-hour sessions but is highly structured and builds on successive lessons. Michael also allows you to make-up classes. Although there is a high upfront cost, for the hours of instruction and model time spread out over the weeks, it's a steal.

I really appreciate that because sometimes you take art classes and the instructor covers in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable. This was not the case at all, she was there to help with any questions I had, and support me and whatever I wanted to make. It was so much fun and I think I may be addicted to making glass now. I start a group class in a week and I'm looking really really forward to.

i heard about oko designs on instagram and have been wanting to try stained glass. angie, the…read moreowner, is very knowledgeable and great at teaching. when i went for the daisy workshop, there were other workshops happening concurrently so angie was going around teaching essentially the same skills but for different final products (daisy or photobooth). i wish i got a bit more instructor supervision as there were about 20-30 people that day, but i'm still very happy i got to try stained glass and make a piece! i highly recommend checking out oko designs if you're wanting to dabble in stained glass. a workshop is a perfect afternoon activity with friends or even for a date!

Everything was going ok however, at some point Sirron asked if I had "conservative" ideals. I was taken aback a bit, but I answered honestly that I said that I am conservative, due to my experience being inside of Google and how I saw them become evil and how I'm trying to stop their agenda. He literally then goes into a tirade about how everyone who's conservative is evil, and how whites have ruined the planet and how I should move out of San Francisco because no one wants conservatives here, and how he will never work with anyone who is a conservative -- Wow. Really unprofessional attitude. And just to set the record clear, I didn't insult Sirron or anything like that. He just tore into me because he wanted to. He could have just been professional and declined the work offer, thus avoided sharing his intolerant, prejudicial and inflammatory remarks. But nope. I really wish I had recorded the conversation somehow because this sort of encounter would have gone viral on social media. Seriously, it was that bad. Other's be warned!
