I highly recommend Katie's printmaking workshops. Combining Katie's tutelage with the printmaking medium, and you get a workshop where any skill level can create something they're proud of in just the first class! I've taken a mix of her linocut and monotype classes for almost 2 years and I can confidently say she's one of the best teachers I've ever worked with (including high school and UC Berkeley). She tailors her teaching to each student's skill, temperament, and personal needs. Under her tutelage, I've been able to make some of the best art in my career. Her class sizes are small and she provides all the materials you'll need. If you need something special, she knows exactly what store you can find it. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, I encourage you to take one of her courses at least once. read more

As someone who doesn't consider himself artistically-inclined, I was very glad I dove in and took a linocut immersion session with Katie. Very approachable, encouraging instruction, which I especially appreciated as someone who has never taken a class before. Got to take home some prints I carved and gained more confidence in my own artistic skills. read more

This was such a wonderful experience led by Katie over this past weekend. And now... I'm completely obsessed With starting my next Linocut. Katie Gilmartin - My first Linocut. Nice cozy campfire. - Art Classes Near Me - San Francisco, California

Excellent class for those interested in starting or continuing with printmaking. I had started linocut a few months before but wanted to improve my skills so I took the linocut class. Katie is a great teacher who gave helpful feedback and suggestions that helped me develop and create some pretty prints. The studio is well-equipped, it was great trying different paper and ink but mostly I loved working with the press. I'm already signed up to take her class again next year! read more

I've been wanting to take one of Katie's classes for awhile and finally made it to her monotype immersion. She is an excellent teacher, very engaged and gives individualized attention. I really like her art as well. She only accepts five students per class so there's plenty of time for her to talk to us and help out if needed, and I felt like I had plenty of space to do my work. She is also currently requiring people to be vaccinated and wear masks in the studio so it felt safe. Super fun, will definitely take another one of her classes. read more

I took the one-day immersive linocut class and was happy I did. I'd never taken an art class before, so I felt intimidated before the class started. But Katie was very encouraging, showed me different ways to interpret my pencil sketch as a suitable linocut, and I walked away from class with several prints of my art. The time whizzed by. I'd definitely recommend to others looking to build their confidence and experience. read more

I have wanted to try linocut for years but always got a little intimidated, having no experience in printmaking. A friend referred me to Katie's workshops and I am thrilled. I took a one day linocut class as a way to introduce myself and I am amazed that I was able to produce so many prints all in one day. Katie was enthusiastic, patient, generous and an obvious expert in her field. I am absolutely going to take more classes and sign up for the multi-week series. This was by far the most pleasurable learning experience I have had in taking on something completely new. read more

Katie Gilmartin - All from a one day workshop! - Art Classes Near Me - San Francisco, California

Katie is an incredible teacher and human. As someone very new to printmaking, Katie helped me learn the basics (and more!). She gives great artistic insights as well, which I found really valuable. I learned so much in her class. It was also cool that there were printmakers of all experience levels in my class. I felt so inspired by others in the class and learned from them as well. Katie also is a part of/leads printmaking for a cool collective called the Queer Ancestors Project that holds space for queer ppl to connect w/ queer history and more (!!!) Highly recommend learning printmaking with Katie! read more

Katie is an incredible teacher and I cannot recommend her classes enough. Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, Katie's passionate teaching, printmaking knowledge and skills, and overall patient and welcoming demeanor will help you tap into your own artistic nature. I took the Sunday monocut intensive with Katie and will definitely be back to the studio for more classes in the future. Katie is an excellent teacher! I have taken two linocut classes with her, and I have learned SO MUCH about print making. I have truly discovered a new passion, much thanks to Katie's enthusiasm and encouragement in my artistic development. She is very patient, and extremely knowledgable. There is no question that you can't ask her, and she bring outs the inner artist and creative in everyone who she works with. I'm really impressed with the high level work I have been able to create in a short amount of time, and always walk away feeling proud of what I have accomplished, and having learned something new. Additionally, she is a very fun and funny person to be around, as are the students that are drawn to the classes : ) Katie has also taken an interest in helping me teach print making to my students (I work in an elementary school in East Oakland) and is always sharing ideas for how I can bring more art to my community. All in all, I highly recommend taking a class with Katie! You may discover an inner artist you didn't know existed. read more

I just finished a three day printmaking class with Katie in her SOMArts Chrysalis Studio. What fun! What great learning. She briefly taught a lesson at the beginning of each day and I was pleased that the typical use of plants and other materials turned out so much more beautifully than in other printmaking classes I've taken. This is thanks to Katie's great sense of design and her superb printmaking expertise. The inks and equipment she provides produce superior results. She is fun and funny, but also quite serious about the craft so you can really learn a lot either as a one-time event or if you are into printmaking for the long haul. Her studio is amazingly organized with everything right at hand. Even though there were four of us in the class, we had plenty of room to move around to run our pieces on her lovely Griffin press. I highly recommend Katie Gilmartin for print workshops. read more

I recently took Katie's Monotype printmaking class and LOVED it! I had never taken a print class before, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Katie is a great teacher--warm and fun, and easygoing, while giving just the right amount of information and guidance. The printmaking process is a fun one, and easy to get into in very little time. You leave each class with several finished pieces. And the prints are beautiful! I looked forward to each class, and was sorry each time 9:30 rolled around and it was over. I hope to take another class in the future. read more

Katie's perfect blend of patience, compassion and professionalism matched with her unending creativity makes each studio session with her a constant adventure. (I should also mention that she is one of the MOST fun and coolest women you will ever meet!). She possesses what only the very best art teachers have: the ability to instruct with innovation and precision while always bringing forth a student's very best creative zest. With Katie I always produce my best work. I had never done printmaking before taking a class with Katie, but I learned incredible techniques in her first class that I still use. Katie's teaching method is gentle, approachable, thorough, and always fun. I now have taken her Mesmerizing Monotype class twice as well as attended countless Open Studio nights and Katie never ceases to inspire and encourage me with whatever (sometimes zany) plan I come up with. I never feel weary about whether something can be done, I am always assured that Katie will be my partner in figuring out how to guide me to execute it. That's a pretty great gift to give to an artist. read more

Katie is one of the best teachers I've ever worked with. She's an incredibly talented and creative artist in her own right, and generously shares her time, skills, and years of experience with students in her classes. Katie has a rare ability to help students discover and express their own unique visions - learning technique as they find their voices. She gives simple, friendly, practical instruction, coupled with unique insight and endless patience - helping students navigate the path from idea to final artwork. She's a gifted artist and teacher, and I always feel like I hit the jackpot when I'm able to find room in her classes. Her classes are organized and fun, with enough instruction to keep focused - but enough free time and space to explore. I love her classes, and the people I've met there - the community around Katie is wonderful. Basically, Katie's the bomb. read more

Katie's printmaking class (Monotype) has been such an inspiration, I look forward to going every week. Katie's studio and teaching style is fitting for any student, completely green looking to learn or artists who have been printmaking for years. What I love most about this class is the small intimate group that cultivates a support group for all things creative. The structure of the class is the perfect balance of teaching, consulting, and playtime. I highly recommend this class if you are looking for a way to fire up your creative side! read more

Katie's classes are excellent: the small studio and outstanding instruction make for an intimate learning environment. In both the Monotype and Lincocut classes - the day-long ones, weekend intensives, and the six-week sessions - Katie provides clear instruction, supplies, and humor. Katie is immensely patient with all students and encouraging of everyone, from the novice to the art school graduate. The structure of the classes is such that students have time to do their thing but with support and guidance as desired. And Katie's love of printmaking is contagious - many of her students (including me) take her classes again and again.....If you're curious about printmaking, this is the place to satisfy that curiosity! read more

Katie is one of the best art teachers I have had the pleasure to learn from. Given I grew up surrounded by art and artists this is no small compliment. Highly recommended for art seekers of all levels. read more

Katie Gilmartin has great breadth and depth of knowledge in all things printed. She is organized, helpful, enthusiastic and extremely clear in her instructions. I've taken luminous linocut twice, even though I've been printmaking a long time. Why? 'Cause Katie rocks and she knows her stuff - materials, methods, etc. My prints come out better there than anywhere else. She's also really encouraging, patient and positive. If you want to learn or improve your relief printmaking, this is a great place to go. read more

Katie is incredible. The classes I took were fantastic. The instruction truly teaches you enough to be dangerous. And in this case, dangerous turns out to involve ink and paper and presses and more fun than I've had in quite a long while. As a teacher and artist and great conversationalist, there is probably no one that better combines all of those things. I learned, I created and I had a lot of fun doing it. I really, really looked forward to each Wednesday class - to the opportunity to learn something and to create something and to see what fellow students were doing. I can't recommend a class with Katie highly enough. I've taken two and will be back for more. Loved every moment and look forward to more. read more

Katie is AMAZING. Here's what I wrote to her after having just 3 classes with her (I've now had more like 18, and I plan on taking many more). "Katie: Your teaching style is so warm and engaging. You have the perfect mix of being supportive and encouraging as well as giving easy-to-understand, detailed and appropriate instructions. You obviously have great intuition about people as well as art and I feel lucky to be learning from you." If you are at all interested in print-making -- even if you think you are most decidedly NOT an artist (as I did) -- I strongly encourage you to take a class with Katie. I am 100% confident you will be thrilled that you did. read more

I took my first class with Katie in June of this year - and immediately signed up for the next one I could get a spot in. Katie is an amazing instructor. That, plus the small class size, leads to a warm, encouraging studio atmosphere where everyone gets along and just has a really great time learning how to make prints! And you'll be surprised and elated by the prints that you are able to produce :) Highly recommend any class with Katie! read more

I cannot speak highly enough of Katie and the classes she teaches. Katie is an extremely talented teacher that can meet any student where they are at - whether you're a skilled printmaker or a total beginner who's never done anything creative before, you'll learn something with Katie. Katie is a wonderful teacher who is very knowledgeable and a fine print maker. I have a masters in education so i know the elements of a great teacher and a marvelous classroom atmosphere and Katie's got it going! first she makes everyone at all levels feel welcome and makes sure everyone is comfortable. Her studio is amazingly clean and well organized with a few signs that tell you what to do so you don't feel like an idiot. her teaching method is amazing because she gets everyone started often at different points in their projects, answers questions and then works with the person who need the most attention, she moves about the room helping each student move forward and slides easily back to addressing us as a group when she want to demonstrate something. she's encouraging and positive and can show students the road toward improvement without anyone feeling criticized. Artists often have trouble teaching other artists for several reasons and one sure fire killer of imparting knowledge is if the teacher feels competitive. S/he may not be competitive with the students but feel the competition of the market place. and then they have enormous problems teaching their finer techniques. But Katie is 100% comfortable sharing wonderful discoveries and methods! even the details of how she got very special results on some of her prints. Katie also did a top notch job in helping me to work with my physical limitations, offering advice and stools and hi counters to find working habits to accommodate my bad back. I'm really learning copper plate etching for my art. Katie is amazingly knowledgeable about printing in general and experimental uses of color in particular. this was the reason i took her course to begin with. but i love her class and it's so much fun that i'm taking it again. the atmosphere is fun and easy going and her well organized studio and small class size eliminate tension. Go.You will go again and again! read more

All the 5 Star reviews about Katie are true! She is a great professional and a passionate true artist... No matter your skill level, Katie makes you feel like your artwork is the most creative, inspired, beautiful work she's ever seen. And she genuinely means it! Katie is an incredibly talented print maker and she willingly shares her knowledge and experience with everyone in the class. Katie Gilmartin is a terrific instructor. I took a Monotype class with her and at the end of the day, with her encouragement and instruction I came home with a number of prints that I was really happy with. About 2 years ago I took Katie's Monotype printing class. It was the first printing class I had ever taken and since then I have taken Katie's classes almost continually. Katie really knows what she's doing and she knows how to run a class that allows for creativity, learning, productivity and fun. Katie is able to instruct the group and at the same time she attends to everyone's individual needs. She has really brought out the best in me. I can't say enough about Katie's classes. read more

I've taken three monoprinting classes with Katie Gilmartin, and she's one of the best teachers I've ever had! Katie is a successful printmaker who teaches both monoprinting and linocut printing in her studio, surrounded by all the equipment (including a giant etching press) and materials, so everything is very hands on. The fabulous Katie has tireless positive energy and encouragement for all her students. She knows an enormous amount about printmaking and answers all questions, big and small. The classes are very small, so everyone gets personal attention and learns a lot. And you start making beautiful prints the very first night! Her bubbly and positive personality make the classes really fun. An added plus: I've found the other students in her classes to be very interesting folks. Many people take the classes multiple times, so you can learn a lot from the other experienced printmakers. read more
