Located on the busy strip of Goodwood Road, and within only a few metres south from the Capri Theatre, the Yeti Nepalese Resaurant has recently opened its doors to the public. Having eaten from two of Adelaide's other and well-established Nepalese restaurants, I was very excited to find out that a new restaurant had opened in my local area - and it certainly does not disappoint.
The place is charmingly presented with a warmly coloured interior, decorated simply with pictures of Nepal and traditional Nepalese artwork. With soft, ambient music playing of what I might assume is traditional Nepalese music, and gentle and helpful staff, the venue sets a great scene for a nice dinner for couples or small groups. They do take, and prefer reservations, and I imagine they will be needed as popularity and patron numbers increase.
The food is excellent with a good range of entrees, mains, and sides; meats, seafood, and vegetables. It may seem a bit dear at first with mains averaging the $20 mark, but the taste is worth it. Servings are also deceptively small, but are actually quite filling. For those who have not yet tried Nepalese cuisine, it is recommended to try one of the banquet options which offer 3 entrees (1 serving of each type), a main from the list, 2 sides, and rice and roti. The banquets are a great introduction to the cuisine if the menu and several dishes may seem daunting. Many of the mains and sides are also vegetarian friendly (I'm not sure about vegan friendly though - sorry).
On my first visit, as part of the "Yeti Banquet" I tried their mild chicken curry and goat curry - both of which were tender and delicious - and their sauces (or gravy) were a good quantity and not overpowering. As a general note: Nepalese curries seem sweeter and less spicy (in terms of hotness and taste/smell) than Indian curries, so it is highly recommended to those who are a bit precious with chillies and spicy things (like me). The entrees (dumpling, samosa, and chicken) were a great start to the meal, and the dumpling in particular seemed to melt in the mouth - try it with a bit of the tomato pickle dip provided
Perhaps my only gripe is that the rice servings could be bigger, but it is just right if you have a serving of roti to accompany it.
The service is great with very friendly staff who were alert and prompt.
