My friend's mother warned me that the ordering procedure was a little like the "soup nazi" from Seinfeld, and it was very unique indeed. The staff behind the counter is no nonsense. They get a bunch of people in, take all their orders down the line, then prepare a whole batch of dogs while they start pouring drinks and getting chips. Once all the dogs come out, they take payment (cash only), and you get your food. And what food! I'm not normally a fan of chili-dogs, but the Cheddardog (chili and cheddar) was stellar. The Krautdog was a little disappointing following the Cheddardog, and I guess it's no surprise that in my round of ordering, I was the only one to get it. It's not bad; it just was unremarkable compared to the cheddardog. Finally the vibe of the place is exactly what you'd expect from a low-cost slop-joint that's been there for decades. It oozes with history, and probably things that you don't want to think about, but to me that's all character; delicious greasy character. I find it akin to the Clover Grill in New Orleans, the Oxford Cafe in Missoula, MT, or McSorley's Old Ale-house in New York City (all places I love). In a world where everything seems to be getting replaced with high-gloss overpriced chains, Yesterdog is the kind of weird unique (highly affordable) spot that should be preserved at all cost. 10/10. The toppings are fairly basic, but the locals respect the quality here. However, are the insanely high ratings deserved? All their dogs are topped with a house-made chili. Not the Texas kind with ample meat and generous beans, but a smooth, rich concoction with a consistency closer to the Canadian gravy ladled on poutine. The chili has an irresistible flavor and texture and really completes the experience. Here's the downside. When I rate burgers, I make sure I'm not fooled by the flashy toppings. I taste just the patty to analyze the quality. Likewise, I sampled the hot dog without the chili and cheese. Yikes! Anticipating a spectacular sausage (since I was visiting a potion of America rich with German heritage), I instead uncovered the cheapest of grocery store wieners you can imagine hiding beneath the accoutrements. I understand this is a local classic. The decor is awesome. Definitely the retro vibe with booths and well worn wood with fun signs. The menu offers about four different kinds of hot dogs. The bun was soft to my liking, the pickle relish was heavenly (I don't even like pickle on my hot dog but OMG -- was it amazing!) The chili and cheese had just enough flavor and messiness that made me happy. The flavor is pretty much the best thing ever. As mentioned before, the vintage decor was a very nice touch. Every single person I've ever met from Grand Rapids raves about Yesterdog. I've been a handful of times over the years and I can only conclude that said people from Grand Rapids have never eaten a hot dog anywhere else in America. When all you sell is hot dogs, the star of the show has got to be the sausage. You'd think surely, this will be an all beef or maybe a natural casing dog from one of the many fantastic Michigan-based meat processors. Will it be a Koegel? A Dearborn? Maybe even a Kowalski? Surprise! It's actually some value weiner with less flavor than a dragonfruit. It is then boiled almost enough to knock the chill off, leaving a cool to the touch core. It smelled so bad like a dead mouse that I covered my face and gagged trying to eat my food. I even stuck gum in after I ate and covered my face til I walked into the fresh air!! On a Saturday night, after listening to "Newt and the Salamanders" play two sets at one of the downtown hot spots and consuming a number of beers, we would pop into Yesterdog for a couple dogs before heading back to the dorms. Or we would stop by after a keg party at a friends house. I hope my kids/parents don't read this because when I moved to Michigan I was only 17 and left when I was 19 (this was the early '80's). To this day I still remember the Yesterdog as being the best hot dog out there. I'm sure some of the memories are beer enhanced. And lets face it, at that age and at 2:00 am after a few beers, it could have been crap and I still would have liked it. But whenever I am back in GR, I stop by and think "yep, still the best." Still looks a lot the same, even the same ordering rules as back then. Prices have doubled since I was there. Dogs are a whole $2 now. When I take my kids to GR later this year, we are coming here. I have been here a few times over the years growing up, so I thought I'd take my daughter who had never been there. We live 3 hours away now, so she either had to go with me, or she'd probably never have the opportunity. There wasn't a line when we got in, thankfully, because I heard they like to yell or can be mean...and I was a fish out of water, so I had no idea where to order or stand, or even where to get napkins ( I was looking all over, and the kid behind the counter said "they are at every table, because you will a lot of them". ) Very nice! :) We didn't know what to order, so we ordered just the chili cheese dog. Reading all of the other reviews now, we should have ordered the ultra dog. Ah well, next time... We ordered cups of water to go with our dogs. It came to around $5. I gave them my bank card, and was told cash only. Good thing I had some cash :) My daughter was in awe of all the decorations and writing on the walls. I couldn't seem to get past the odd smell, but I also read in another review that is normal...it really is like gym socks! :p I could only eat half of my dog. It was ok, but I knew if this 42 year old lady ate the whole thing, it would haunt me later. The bun was soggy, the dog was almost the consistency and flavor of a Vienna sausage, and the chili was very runny. It was very flavorful- and at the same time odd. But...in all fairness, I'm older and not used to quick convenience food as much in my diet. My daughter thought hers was awesome- she's 14. She ended up eating my other half. Unfortunately, it caught up with her not even 5 minutes later and had to check out the restroom- which was actually very clean and smelled like bleach. First of all, the service was super quick, even with a huge crowd! I only got one at first, and I completely devoured the warm hot dog. I wasn't even hungry but there was no way I could leave only eating one. So I got 3 more and dang, these are truly the best, most crispy, savory hot dogs I've ever had. I would eat them forever. So, I did leave still "hungry" for more but I was pretty satisfied with how many I had. Overall, great service and amazing hot dogs. The hot dogs were also a little mushy and didn't have a casing that snapped. We tried 5 of their hot dogs (not the veggie dog). It seemed like they put lots of toppings on the hot dogs which was a bit much for how small the hot dogs were. You should definitely go and give them a try at least once. Customer service here is the only thing that's stayed the same. Unfortunate, as it was never a strong suit. The attitude has always been pretty dismal, condescending and rude. Service with a smile is not something Yesterdog is known for. They were known for their hot dogs, but, sadly, those are not what they used to be. I'm sorry to say the Classic Cheddardog and Yesterdog are a shadow of their former selves. Today they are smaller, thinner and less flavorful, though just as sloppy as I remember. They used to also claim, fresh and no nitrate dogs though I don't know if that's still true today. Based on taste and size I'm guessing it's not. A classic Grand Rapids fixture, Yesterdog indeed excels at the hot dog experience. The place has an eclectic vibe with lots of memorabilia from the 30's, 40's and 50's, including an old jukebox, vintage telephone booth, manual cash register and plenty of classic art and adverts from the 40's on the walls. There's plenty of booth seating as well as a counter-and-barstool area. The ordering process is kinda particular: you go to the register first, order all your dogs, then drinks, then chips. Payment is with cash or check - but no credit cards. The menu pretty much consists of various dogs and chips with various Pepsi products to drink, so make sure no one in your group wants anything different. The dogs, however, are amazing! So glad they are not the gristle-laden all-beef variety, but more like the tender, pork types you get at the ballpark. They're perfectly cooked with soft buns and ample toppings. My favorites include the kraut dog and cheddar dogs. The chili is messy, but very tasty. My only complaint is that the cheddar shreds are just dumped on cold if you don't get the chili to go along with. Still, the dogs are very enjoyable and I try to rein it in when I visit, but I'm rarely able to; they just go down so easy! If you're in the mood for some great franks, this remains one of the best places in GR to grab some. read more
