Just up the hill from Swords Rimrock Park, along a one-lane unpaved road, is the Yellowstone Kelly grave and the site dedicated to this Civil War veteran, scout, hunter, trader who was friends with some notable people of his time.
It's a strange place for a grave for someone eligible to be buried in Arlington, but according to the writings about him available at this center, he wanted to be buried where he had his "greatest adventures" and so Montana, high on the Rims overlooking the Yellowstone Valley, it was.
The view from here is spectacular. It's also very quiet. There are some easy, paved paths winding near the markers describing the life of Yellowstone Kelly. There's a paved parking lot, if you choose to make the drive here, but it's also accessible from the Heritage Trail path coming from MetraPark for those who prefer hiking, walking, or biking.
If learning about historical figures who helped make Billings is on a must-do list, then make the hike. If that's not your style, it's also a nice pause on your walk or run along the trail. read more
