If kitsch homeware is your thing, you need to swing by Pussy…read more Popular with teenagers, twenty-somethings and tourists, it's a cute shop that stocks everything from gilded picture frames, weird candlesticks and fab cushions to interesting lampshades and wall stickers. They also sell great art and design books, cheeky wrapping paper and quirky greeting cards - which make it a perfect place to pick up last minute birthday presents and stocking fillers. If you like what you see, check out Pussy's other Brighton store - Pussy Home Boutique.

One little browse around here is sure to put a smile on your face, if nothing else. As has been pointed out by fellow Qypers, there's not much in here that serves any purpose other than to look pretty, make you chuckle or keep you mildly entertained for an hour or so. As well as branded stuff, like their range of Moomin bags, pencil cases, purses and cuddly toys (which, incidentally, I find VERY freaky) and the obligatory 'Keep Calm and Carry On' merchandise that's absolutely everywhere at the moment, they've also got lots of quirky, novelty bits. My current favourites are a pair of wind-up robot salt and pepper shakers necessary? Not in the slightest. Hilarious? Totally. They epitomise the entire point of this shop funny, largely pointless and utterly brilliant.

Am I the only person in Brighton that refuses to be charmed and seduced by Velvet?…read more I've been in to both the shop in the Lanes and this large, warehouse-style shop in Hove on a handful of occasions and I never see anything I'd want to take home. Their selling point seems to be that they sell vintage style furniture that falls into three categories; the French look, the modern British / open plan living look and American retro. The problem is, the chairs, sofas, wardrobes and cabinets they sell don't even look slightly authentic to me, they look like cheap copies. If I wanted to replicate one of the three looks, I'd rather go to a genuine antique shop that sells original and salvaged furniture. Bizarrely, the one thing this shop has got right is clothes. To the back of the floor, there's a small selection of beautiful, brightly coloured womenswear including designer silk dresses, summery skirts, jackets and accessories. Most of the ones I liked were too petite for my curvy figure but in a parallel universe, I'd probably pick up a few holiday clothes from here. Shame about the furniture and lighting...

Velvet has an eclectic mix of fashion, home ware and gifts and its one of those places where you can find new and cool things that you can't pick up elsewhere. Some of the clothes are a little random and it can be pricey, however, I did pick up a great pair of boots for £40 the other day. I will often pop in here when looking for a gift for a friend and often come out with presents for myself as well! The staff can be a little surly at times but on the whole its a much better shopping experience than you will find at any of the chain stores.

Abode is the perfect place to find homeware gifts for a loved one…read more Or for a loved one to find gifts for you! Situated about halfway down Kensington Gardens, it's charming boutique store that has lovely side tables, console tables, room dividers, fringe panels, floor lamps, table lamps, pigeon lights, marimekko fabrics, wall stickers, mirrors and luxury bedding. If you already have everything you need in the lounge and bedroom department, they also sell gorgeous kitchen and bath accessories from china, glasses, tea-pots and coasters to candles, soaps and towels. Don't know if they still have any in stock, but last time I went in I fell in love with the wicker bulls head and the Ibride ostrich console table.

They also sell small items of furniture, including some really classy wooden side tables and stools. Christmas is by far the best time to visit the store, as they have all sorts of beautiful decorations for your tree. They have a gorgeous selection, including gold Christmas trees and stars as well as some really beautiful glass decorations in the shape of parrots and other pretty birds. I bought a few last year in turquoise, white and gold and they really transformed my tree! In fact, they're so lovely that I've hung them up in my bedroom all year. Abode is a shop full of things you'd rarely buy yourself...quirky light fittings, gilded bird cages and some really delicate chinaware. It is almost impossible to walk around without starting a mental wish-list, making it the perfect place to start your Christmas list, whilst picking up a few gifts yourself! You can even create your wedding list at Abode! NB. Everything feels a bit delicate, so it's not a great place to bring the kids!
