This lovely little store is a new addition to Western Road, building on Bert's successful original outlet at 33 George Street in Hove (their web-site has not yet been updated to include the new venue). Basically, they sell things for the kitchen, like crockery, cutlery, draining racks, chopping boards, gadgets, and so on. Although the range is not that large - only a few styles of cutlery, for example - they do have lots of useful things, and the store is lovely just to browse around. The place was buzzing with happy shoppers, doing just that. (In marked contrast to the January Sales hell that characterised the rest of Brighton). I have spent hours trying to find an small olive spoon, for example - and they had one, and an olive spear, and a spring-loaded pickle fork, and... We also bought a really large, heavy beech wood chopping board - from a sustainable source - for under £8. Something else that caught my eye were several designs of nice wire draining racks, in bright funky colours - no horrid plastic tat. Oh, and lovely, friendly, helpful staff. I just love to look for unusal cooking items. This place is good for finding items for the kitchen that one doesn't need but feels they do! The items are usually very colourful and inventive. How many different cork screws does one need? The prices are a bit high. But, for a once of gift or a personal treat it won't break the bank. The shop front adds to Western road. This part of the road is drab. The frontage reminds me of the good ole days when shops spilled out into the street and was a welcoming beacon to entice the shopper in. Well worth a brouse. read more

I started getting in to cooking when I came to University a couple of years ago, since then I have become something of an enthusiast, seeking new snazzy items to make me feel even more professional. Bert's is therefore my dream store; here you will find a bunch of decorative, innovative and funky kitchen and home accessories, all surprisingly well priced. Is scrumptious an acceptable description for a shop that sells home ware?, this shop does not sell food but it makes my mouth water! In case it's not obvious I love Bert's and I get high from all the delightful kitschy items I must have in my kitchen. I used to have to walk past this store on my way to and from work and could not resist nipping in for a browse about 90% of the time, consequently I hold Bert's personally responsible for igniting my obsession with home ware. The items aren't cheap as chips but the quality is brilliant. read more

Bert's is a nice homeware store, that's been trading since 2005, owned by local residents, with the satisfaction of local residents in mind. Described by its owners as a 'one-stop wonderland for kitting out your home' , that's 'packed to the rafters with all the essentials from basic cooking utensils to stylish accessories to spice-up your kitchen', Bert's is a great local shop, boasting a good, quality selection regards all of the aforementioned items, retailed at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is pleasant here, and the service is friendly, but be warned it can get busy. read more

I love this little shop! There's so much to look at and imagine in the grown-up kitchen of my future. One section has many single-purpose items, like sandwich spreaders (ie, not for buttering buns or toast), garlic presses and storage containers, corn on the cob holders and egg timers. Dishware includes a full set of plain, white china at 25% off, every time of wine glass (including the party evening 'jumbo size'), all kinds of cutlery and utensils and novelty gift mugs. Bakers can find every possible supply here - pans in every shape and size, cake toppers and candles, cupcake display racks and several varieties of decorative cookie tins. Other houseware items include welcome mats, wicker baskets, bathroom and kitchen drawer organisers, dustpans and dish racks. Everything is high quality and a bit on the pricey side - measuring cups for £9, for instance. I'll have to wait until I'm a bit more settled (and a bit less of a student) to start stocking up. But one day, I shall ask myself, 'Hmm...round cake or square cake today?' read more

Geat shop staffed by some really helpful and friendly people that are more than happy to show you some of the many things they have in stock. All you have to do is ask what you are after. Its not as pricey as some of the other shops selling home ware too. What I love about this place is they take your average kitchen accessory and make it 10 times more interesting. Like oven gloves made from silicone, they are so much easier to use too. They also have some fantastic pots and pans. I recently bought one of their 3-tier steamers and have been steaming everything in the kitchen! read more

I want to own absolutely everything in this shop. If my home possessed all that this shop sells, I am convinced I'd have the perfect (50s-style) life. I would spend all day baking with my brightly coloured silicone kitchen accessories wearing a polka-dot apron, then I would decorate my little fairy cakes in doily-style cases. To drink with my cakes, I would brew tea in my patterned ceramic teapot all snuggly in an embroidered tea cosy and drink it out of my range of flowered Kath Kidston mugs... Yep, this place is a housewife's heaven. Everything they sell in here is practical in some way and all very stylish. It's definitely a homestore with a difference. Although you might pay a bit more than you would for your average, white, boring kitchen accessories, you'll end up creating a brightly coloured, happy, homely home that you want to be cleaning and cooking in all the time... or maybe that's just me... read more

I especially appreciate the wide variety of colours - their buyer seems to have a preference for colourful products. It makes the place so cheerful. I spent half an hour in there and found all sorts of things I never knew existed, such as mushroom brushes. The prices are reasonable. read more

A 1950's inspired, kitsch version of neighbouring Robert Dyas, bringing a little colour and funk into the home. Selling all kinds of bright, unique homey stuff from spotty brooms to monkey veg peelers, bowls decorated in olives, strawberries, marshmallows and smarties. Need a spotted egg timer? A bright red biscuit tin? Perhaps a leopard print oven glove/apron and tea towel set or some onion goggles? Bert has all the bare necessities to bring your kitchen to life and unleash the hidden housewife in us all. As previous reviewers have mentioned, the prices do creep above those of high street stores, but find me a union jack bathroom set or pillar box red whistling kettle in Robert Dyas and I'll dutifully cross the road. read more

This is one of those shops that makes me wish I was rich. I love kitchen stuff and Bert's has a great range of products which are all very stylish. The range of baking products including loads of cookie cutter shapes and cake tins all for reasonable prices. It is one of those places that makes me think I could do all sorts of cool things if only I had the appropriate utensils, which luckily Bert's sells! There's also other homewares; most of which are available in assortments of patterns. I wholeheartedly approve of the abundance of polka dots in this shop! I love this store - it's full of the useful as well as the useless. If you're looking for something for the home (well, kitchen mainly), chances are they have it. If you're looking for something quirky and pointless, chances are they have that too. I particularly like the mini cheese graters. The only downside is that it's a little overpriced, IMO. read more

This is a lovely shop and full of things that you never knew you needed ! It's the first place I go to when I need a gift - as there really is something for everyone ! Prices are a little high - but arguably they do have things which don't seem to be available anywhere else ! Has a good balance between genuinely useful items and novelty items. Bert's is both practical and gifty, with lovely little homeware bits and bobs for your kitchen, home and for presents. The style is quite Kath Kitson, with 50's designs and contemporary gadgetry that you will buy but may or may not use. The owner obviously has a great eye for both pretty details and practical greatness, as not many places in Brighton sell pink chopping boards that fold at the edges so your vegetable detritus ends up in the bin and not the kitchen floor. You can get both pricey flashy gifts here and small things that will bring much joy to pantry lovers. Again with the keen eye for design, you will also find some of the nicest prints here on cards, aprons, trays and crockery. read more

This shop is a throw back to the 50's (even though i wasnt born then). It has many wonderous, cute and colourful items and odities that are perfect for a warm family home. What a terrible experience. When I tried to return two faulty but expensive baking dishes (one of which very obviously had its chemical coating peeling off it into my food) I had to be *extremely* assertive before they would agree to refund the money "just this once" - as if I was the problem and they were doing me a favour! Avoid this store unless you're prepared to bring a legal team with you if anything goes wrong. read more
