    My home from home

If I could live in this shop I would be so happy, it is just beautiful. It is full of gorgeous furniture, accessories and knick knacks you never knew you needed. Some of the items are pretty expensive but there are some treasures to be found. The porcelain animal heads are something I need to find space for in my home!!! They also have a very cute dog that risks freely through the shop - if I could fit her in my bag is take her too.

Papillon is actually two shops side by side, with a small dog that wanders between them when the doors open. It's quite sweet. The first shop has larger furniture and home décor - couches, cushions, elegant lighting fixtures and such. Next door you can find smaller décor and gift ideas - candles, knick knacks and Christmas ornaments of the same quality, but with less grandeur. It's worth checking out just for the puppy, really.

Papillon, continuing the seeming butterfly theme in the Lanes, offers a mixture of smaller furniture pieces and decorations for the home. Where most of these stores in Brighton aim to offer slightly more, or a slight twist on this theme, Papillon is just full of tat. It isn't particularly tasteless or anything like that, just dull compared to all of the other stuff available in this part of town. It feels harsh to criticise so directly, but Papillon really doesn't offer anything that I haven't seen anywhere else. It doesn't even seem to have a particular theme, like Florestine's beach-ware or something similar, just a collection of random bits and pieces I wouldn't dream of buying. I feel like such a snob saying it, but the pieces are all so gauche and unbuyable: a real shame in such a great location, and with so much space. To add insult to injury, the prices also seem to be exceptionally high for this kind of thing. They rival Ananda's, in the North Laine, but at least they sell original, enterprising stuff: I can't imagine ever paying this amount of money for this sort of tosh. With so many decorative items on offer in the middle of Brighton, you'd hope the independent places had some sense of style and dignity, and would sell less modern and mass-produced items at sensible prices. Unfortunately, Papillon does none of these things: I'd be surprised if it's still around in a year's time.

Papillon apparently specialises in 'hamonic living and furniture' and this is definitely the impression you get from their stores - with chilled out music, incense and sparkling candles. I headed into the the gift part of their two store south lane branch (next door are more serious home furnishing items). There was an extremely cosy vibe, and I stayed extra long as this offered an excellent refuge from the wet, cold and windy weather outside! I didn't buy anything though, despite being tempted by loads of pretty candles - as is the case all too often in Brighton, the prices are hugely inflated.

Everything is sourced by the couple themselves and as a result, you'll find old leather arm chairs and 1930s sofas next to stainless steel cabinets, wooden chests, trunks and unusual lights. The quality and originality of the stock means the prices venture towards the expensive. For those with a smaller budget however, there's also a small selection of paintings, decorative letters, statues, world globes and mirrors. Since the couple are so friendly, it's also worth making them an offer if there's something you really want but can't quite stretch to.

However, on closer inspection Swag proves to be a very stylish showroom of the highest quality antique furniture and home furnishings. It is an unusual experience compared with many of Brighton's other secondhand furniture dealers, who generally inhabit musty, cavernous shops, characterised by clutter and chaos. Swag is clean and polished; full of 1930s and 1940s office and home furnishings that would fit perfectly in a Film Noir set. I particularly like the metal desk lamps...they really capture something of another time. Although I personally enjoy the rummaging treasure-hunt aspect of the more casual antique/ junk shops in town, I do admire the experience and precision and with which the owners have sourced their collection. The stock is beautiful, just a little pricey for me! A great place to find striking one-offs if you have money to burn.

They have a gorgeous selection, including gold Christmas trees and stars as well as some really beautiful glass decorations in the shape of parrots and other pretty birds. I bought a few last year in turquoise, white and gold and they really transformed my tree! In fact, they're so lovely that I've hung them up in my bedroom all year. Abode is a shop full of things you'd rarely buy yourself...quirky light fittings, gilded bird cages and some really delicate chinaware. Money aside, I'd vote Rume one of the best, if not the best, independent furniture store in Brighton. Amongst other things they stock two in-house ranges, Baker & Belgae and Jet Baker, that comprise everything from Victorian style Chesterfields to Opulent Chez Longs. They also stock various other pieces including lamps, clocks, cushions and cabinets. If you've serious cash then you can even get a bespoke item made to you exact specifications. If it wasn't so bloody expensive I'd be a bigger fan of this place but I can't give five stars to a business that charges over £3000 for a sofa.

If I had a spare three and a half thousand, I'd be tempted to buy Mool's incredible, life-size horse lamp. It makes me laugh every time I see it and would shock visitors. In reality, my budget only stretches to Tom Dixon mirrorball lamps and their divine cushions. Should I pick the rabbit and lettuce ones or pigeon and jelly?
