I'm a bit of a fan of a museum cafe, as any day out is always enhanced by a little coffee and bun break. In this case we found ourselves in the area and Maggie Mays being queued out the door we decided to give the Yellow Door in the Ulster Museum a try.
Bright and airy with lovely big windows overlooking Botanic Gardens, it is easy to be distracted by the location and be gentler on the food. Perhaps the big windows mean they can see your purse coming, as for a light lunch this place is a little spendy. You order at a reasonably well laid out counter with a selection of your usual lunch type mularky as sandwiches, soup, perhaps a baked potato. Having the produce looking sadly at you like a puppy in a pound wanting a home did make me wonder how long they had been sitting there, but we ordered a soup and a toastie and were sent off to our seats and told they'd be brought out. On arrival I can't deny what we got wasn't tasty, it was. It just lacked a little something, like perhaps care. My toasty came all lonely on a plate. I could have paid extra for some salad, fair enough, but a little garnish or care in presentation wouldn't have gone amis. My friend did enjoy his soup, but did feel a little ripped off considering it was only a bowl of soup and a fizzy orange was over 6 quid.
In all I would say it is a brilliant location so fair enough with the prices, but like life it is amazing how much more goodwill you can get with a little added finesse. read more
