Once upon a time I would've told a tale of how Cafe Conor was the best restaurant in Belfast. Sadly this is no longer the case. Nowadays I'm disappointed. It's not because Conor's gone bad, but instead, this restaurant which was once so great, is now mediocre. I had dinner here tonight (Tuesday 12/04/2016) and the food was tasteless. My sweet potato, halloumi and portobello mushroom burger with chips was completely bland. Wine was nice, service lovely and the Artist studio style interior of Cafe Conor ensures it's still one of Belfast's most beautiful restaurants. Unfortunately all this is for nothing if food is a let down. I rated Conor 5 stars over a year ago but now it's a 3. This is not just based on tonight's visit alone, instead in the past year I've had a couple of lunches and dinners here, each flavourless and a bit of a let down. I kept returning because a couple of years ago the food from Cafe Conor was fabulous, tasty and luscious. Their halloumi, green bean and poached egg salad would have topped my list of all time favourite dishes. Sadly this dish is no longer offered. I hoped on each visit over the last year that I would experience some of the old Conor magic, but that never happened. I don't know why this is. Maybe the Chef changed, maybe the recipes changed or maybe the ingredients changed. From now on I'll be going elsewhere. Such a shame... read more

Please take note - Café Conor does not take reservations, which means that if you walk in and it's busy you'll more than likely be walking out sad and depressed as you won't get to enjoy their lovely grub and refreshing décor. There are ways to avoid this, number one: don't go at peak times. As it is next to Queens Uni it's not often that Café Conor is quiet but I reckon if you avoid the 1pm - 2pm slot you should slip in as long as your group isn't too large. Number two; just wait it out - they will eventually have a table free so if you chat to the staff and hang around long enough you'll get seated. Trust me, Café Conor is worth the wait - the food is fresh and filling and the service is second to none. They serve alcohol too but be aware if you have a lunchtime pint you'll end up staying there all day. The food isn't cheap but you feel like you're paying for quality so it's grand. On to Café Conor's décor, which in my opinion is it's main selling point. They have a huge glass ceiling that allows natural light to pour in creating a real alfresco dining experience. My husband came here for breakfast right when they opened. Things got a little busy about 44 mins later. Service was wonderful and the staff were friendly. We both got americanos which were good. I got the wee breakfast with a side of black pudding, which was a perfect amount of food. My husband got the big breakfast and could f finish it all by he loved it. read more

A trip to the University area isn't complete without a visit to this beautiful little bistro. Even on the dreariest autumn day it is always like stepping into the light which streams from the skylight, and if the décor isn't enough the menu will certainly warm your soul. The breakfasts are hearty and there is something for everyone even if you are a heath freak or a fan of Ulster frys. If you are more of a late riser the lunches are always a winner, with a special mention going to the chicken and chorizo burger, the thought of which is making my mouth water as I type. Even better it is licensed, perfect if you need a little glass of wine to lighten a wet afternoon at the Ulster Museum with your little darlings. Be warned though, this is not a hidden gem and be prepared to queue at times, but don't worry, it will definitely be worth it! read more

I was disappointed with my meal at cafe Connor and the service was less than desirable. When we arrived we had a 20 minute wait for a table which was ok seeing as the place was busy which I took as a good sign. Once we were seated it took another 10 minutes before they took out order for drinks which we didn't see for another 10 minutes. I went for the salted chilli chicken and soy noodles....little did in know that I had ordered an entire bottle of soy sauce with my noodles. The plate was swamped with the stuff. This made lunch a messy affair for me and my friend beside me. Not once were we asked if everything was ok and I had to stop a member of staff to order more drinks. Not a great experience all round and not the cheapest option in town either. read more

Cafe Conor is housed in a fabulous high ceilinged room with a lantern roof that was once the studio of local artist William Connor. Open from breakfast till late this neat little cafe situated in the bustling area near Queens uni serve modern european dishes, comfort foods like yummy soups and more classic dishes. There really is something for everyone on offer at Conors. I popped in for a quick coffee recently and really enjoyed a latte. They also offer a selection of herbal tea and milkshakes and a great selection of wines if you're in for dinner. Although this cafe is very small, the atmosphere is really relaxed and friendly. Now, here is a hidden gem that not a lot of people seem to mention. I would probably not have ever set foot in this place had I not been lucky enough to win a three course meal with a bottle of wine for two a couple of years ago... I was won over and have been back many times since. 'Cool' is the most appropriate word for this place, were I only allowed one. Brilliant decor and paintings on the walls, sparkling bar area, fantastic service. The chef is clearly one who understands how a pasta dish should work - pasta not being just something to fill you up, but a tasty and integral part of their (fantastic) carbonara and many of the daily specials. If it's the same chef who does the desserts, I hope he's on a whoppingly huge salary, because the tiramisu (obviously NOT bought-in) is breathtaking. This is a lovely little restaurant/cafe right on the doorstep of Queen's University. Named for the Northern Ireland-born artist WIlliam Conor, the building used to be where he painted (there's even a blue plaque outside), and you can see why when you notice the massive skylight in the roof, letting in oodles of natural light in the daytime. The Cafe has stayed true to its artistic roots and features artwork on its walls from local, contemporary artists. It's very small, with 3 or 4 booths down each side and a long banquet table down the middle. This is a restaurant that expects you to sit next to other parties if there's no room, so be warned! The food itself is variable. Breakfast and lunch are both lovely, if a bit dependable. The evening menu varies and always features local ingredients, which makes it a big hit with me. Right across from the newly refurbished Ulster Museum, Cafe Connor is perfect for a feed and a rest after a day of taking in all that the museum has to offer. read more

If you like lasagne, please visit Cafe Conor and try theirs as it's quite simply the nicest I've had this side of Pisa. Seriously, even though it's a healthy sized portion and I had mine with chips, when I'd finished I just wanted to eat it all over again. My dinnertime conversation was limited to making yummy noises and talking about how nice it was, so I can't have been great company but with a nice lasagne like that, who cares?! Even aside from the lasagne, Conor is a beautiful place to eat, especially during the day where its numerous huge windows make it one of the brightest, airiest places to have lunch. And while I do find it hard to turn down the lasagne, I've never been disappointed with any of the choices at Conor. Lovely. read more

We were in need of brunch! As u do of a Sunday...hungover! Cafe Conor at this point was 2nd on our list of choices that afternoon...(because I have never been before I panicked in case I wouldn't like it!) thankfully our 1st choice was too busy & we didn't have time (too hungover) to wait!! So cafe Conor it was... & well thank sausages this was the case as I had thee most amazing eggs Benedict ever in Belfast!! It was yummy..& of course I added sausages on the side! The eggs were just perfectly poached & the bacon crispy (almost chargrilled but not chewy!) the hollandaise sauce was perfect also & there was a spicy brown sauce type decorated on the plate which surprisingly was an extra yummy bonus!! All was washed down with a blood orange San Pellegrino... Every kcal was worth it! I was satisfied for hours after & am looking forward to getting back to Cafe Conor to try out their lunch/dinner menus!! Conor is a fantastic little place located right in the heart of the student area of south Belfast. It's a quaint little place and it's perfect for those visiting the area or a student with a little spare change in their pocket. The bright and airy little boutique cafe/restaurant does a varied range of breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The first time I landed down was for an early breakfast. I was moving to Belfast for the first time and was up with the folks moving my various things into my student gaff. I had crispy streaky bacon, served on top of freshly made waffles and lots of maple syrup. A fantastic way to start the day. The bacon was exceptionally crispy and of the highest quality, the waffles crispy on the outside and doughy in the middle doused in the sugary sweetness of the syrup. They also do a brilliant dinner menu with a selection of inventive modern dishes with an Irish twist. read more

Food is excellent with lots of locally sourced fresh produce. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for. Great atmosphere and the outside seating is lovely in a good day. We often have lunch at cafe Conor before taking a stroll round the botanical gardens or the ulster museum. Also just across the road is an ancient cemetery, friars bush. The artist's studio theme of this restaurant/bar/café is carried off well here, its in the former studio of William Conor, who died in 1954. There is a blue plaque by the door to prove it. I really liked it in here - plenty of character, including a lantern roof, white walls, wooden tables and a few booths at the side if you want to sit somewhere a bit less communal. Good bistro type tasty food is served at lunch and dinner, I tried some pasta carbonara and enjoyed their house red wine one evening but as it is open from morning till late so it's possible to get most things from cooked breakfast to tea and coffee. It is a fairly relaxed spot and I would say popular with the youngish, professional crowd and thirty something females wanting a place for a good conversation and nice glass of wine, or whatever. read more

I recently had lunch at Cafe Conor. It's always been at the bottom of my road but for some reason I've never really bothered to ever go there. It appears I've been making a huge mistake. This place is fantastic. Their lunch menu was full of interesting dishes all with a hint of Irish in them, making some of the more traditional things on offer a little different. It's bright, spacious and have outside seating for those occasional sunny days in Belfast. A great place that's really worth a visit. read more

This is my favourite place to eat in Stranmillis. Great atmosphere in a very bright pleasant room. A little pricey though.

I really like this place, it's in an original little building at the bottom of Stranmillis, not far from the town and close to the University and Museum/Botanic Gardens. It's got an easy, friendly atmosphere and the food is always fresh and tasty. They do lovely scones and soups, and the menu is always attractive, whatever choice is on it, be it for the evening or for a light lunch. What I like about it too is the views of the museum across the street, and you get the sense that you are in an upmarket atmosphere but it's very casual and enjoyable - the staff are also really lovely and helpful too. I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the University/Museum area and feeling peckish. read more

Each time I have went to Conor, I have been disappointed with the staff. The food has always been great! The staff, however, are inattentive and rude. On our last visit, we waited to be seated for about 10-15 minutes when there were clearly tables available and staff just standing around. We were shown a table but not given menus, although two groups of people who came in after us, shown to their table quickly, were given menus. When I asked for a menu I was made to feel like I had disturbed them from standing around doing nothing. Again I really enjoy the food here, but I won't be back. read more
