Called Yellow Cab dispatch, then sat on hold. Finally, a voice said "Yellow Cab" and that was it. Back to the canned music. Waited a few more minutes, then hung up and dialed, again. Listened, once more, to the very strange-sounding, computerised, robotic message. Then a gruff voice came on, swearing and obviously yelling at somebody at his end. I said "hello" a few times and he finally grunted something I couldn't understand. I said, "Is this Yellow Cab?". He answered, very gruffly and mad sounding, that it was. He yelled something else at me that I could not understand and I thought, why am I giving these people my business? So, I hung up and called MacLure's. What a difference!! Very, very nice gentleman on the other end and the taxi driver was so pleasant and polite. Had the radio subdued (on CBC) and didn't spend every minute on his phone each time the car was not moving. When we got to our destination he paid attention to me and not a phone, unlike every YC driver I've experienced, who barely acknowledge that you exist. I gave him a good tip and thanked him for being so nice. I told him that the dispatch was also really nice and he agreed; said they were a great bunch of people. My husband and I don't live together (we want to live together but we don't like each other's places, and trying to find a decent, affordable rental in Vancouver is impossible), and on Wednesday night (December 5th), I had to go home. Since it was dark and cold, and I had a large suitcase from our trip to Vegas, I decided to take a cab home, as Lyft is not an option in Vancouver. My husband was somehow able to get a cab via their online booking system, something that did not work for me when I tried it on October 19th. (I don't know what the hell was going on that night -- none of the cab companies were picking up their phones; none of the online booking systems were working; and the apps were glitching out.) Surprisingly, a cab came pretty quickly. My husband carried my large suitcase to the cab, placed it down, kissed me goodbye, and started heading back to his house. The cab driver, who had opened up the trunk, said to me, "What? He's just going to leave it there?" I was puzzled and thought he was trying to make a joke, and a poor one at that. I looked at the cab driver, waiting for him to put the suitcase in the trunk, something that EVERY cab driver does. The cab driver just looked at me, and then asked me, a petite woman, to put the large suitcase in the trunk. Confused and uncertain if he was trying to joke around, I told him that it was too heavy for me, and asked him to do it. He then REFUSED to place the suitcase in the trunk, and once again told ME to do it, clearly not joking this time. I told him if he wouldn't put the suitcase in the trunk, then I would call another cab. Then he changed his tune and tried to feign a back injury. I didn't buy it, as if he truly had a back injury, how hard is it to say, "I'm sorry, but I have a back injury; could you or your partner please put the suitcase in the trunk?" Uncomfortable, I called my husband to come over (he was only a few feet away), and told him that the cab driver refused to put the suitcase in the trunk. Now that a MAN was there, the driver magically no longer had a back injury and easily picked up the suitcase, and said to me, "It's not heavy! You said it was heavy!" HOW FUCKING RUDE! 1. It is your goddamn JOB to assist customers with their luggage. I'm not an entitled princess or anything, but I have never experienced anything like that with a cab driver before. Ever. 2. I am a small woman (five feet tall) and the driver was a man nearly a foot taller than me, and despite my weight gain, it's safe to say that he weighed more than me. I want to book a cab with my phone and know it will arrive. Uber was founded 10 years ago with an app and system that does exactly that. Vancouver cab companies, by the grace of BC politics, have been given 10 years to match it. They aren't even close. I badly wanted Yellow Cab to succeed, so I've tried the Yellow Cab app a dozen times, but it has only worked three times. Usually the system is down. Sometimes it crashes. Sometimes it books, but then later it's cancelled. Sometimes it says they're outside, but by the time I walk out the door they're gone. Their phone system isn't much better; if I can even get through, 1/4 of the time they never showed up. I know what happens to those: I've gotten into a cab who drove off and then asked my name, realized I wasn't his fare, then shrugged and kept driving. They have no repercussions for missing a fare, and no system for reporting it. Also, it's infuriating to see half a dozen other Yellow Cabs drive by before MY cab shows up. Why wasn't my fare assigned to the closest cab? No wonder drivers don't care about missing their fares if half the time those fares already jumped into a different Yellow Cab rather than waiting for the one assigned to them. The problem is deeper than a buggy app: their whole system is total chaos. Drivers are about as hit-and-miss as Uber drivers. Some drive dangerously, some don't know how to use their GPS and get lost, some smell bad or play terrible music, or refuse to drive you where you want to go, or make you pay cash, but most are just nice quiet folks who drive you from A to B. Uber drivers are no better. But at least you can complain about dangerous or system abusing Uber drivers and they'll be kicked from the system if enough people do. Cab drivers are anonymous and protected. Visitor friends and relatives are constantly frustrated by the lack of Uber here. I don't know what to tell them - walk 5 minutes to the closest major road and stand there hoping one will drive by before you're late for your appointment? It's a terrible, stressful, incredibly outdated system. It makes Vancouver look bad as a tourist destination. Yes, Yellow Cabs are common and easy to hail along major roads, so long as it isn't rush hour or after midnight. But those other times, standing in the rain, hoping one will come by, it's miserable. And the medallions, the politics of protecting cab companies - that's mainly for the benefit of the company owners, not the drivers. Uber pays just as well, it just employs extra part-time people for those busy times (and they get paid 2x-5x as much during those times). Vancouver Yellow Cabs are cheaper than Uber, if you include surge pricing in the average. I'd be happy to pay more, and if that was the problem the city of Vancouver could easily enforce higher minimum rates. To top it, all drivers everywhere are going to be out of work in 10 years once self-driving cars are a thing (though god knows Vancouver will be the last holdout there too), so switching to a gig economy for drivers now will make that transition easier in the future. But honestly, all I REALLY want is an app that works. read more

I wish I could give 0 stars. I have waited more than hour and a half for a cab tonight.... they said I was next on their list and am still waiting. We really need to get Über in Vancouver as the taxi system here absolutely sucks. The city needs to get on board with this and stop trying to please the cab drivers who complain that their jobs will be taken! At least we will have reliable transportation. Ever since Uber, I haven't really used taxis. Unfortunately, or fortunately, they don't have Uber in Vancouver. Well the Yellow Cab number is in the condo we rented so we called. They responded quickly, the driver was friendly and helpful. He brought us to our destination and the price was very reasonable - far better than the insulting fares charged by the cab companies in most cities in America. So just for that I would probably give them a four. But it gets better, WAY BETTER! Once you call the first time, your cell number and pick up location are programmed into the system. The next time I called there was an automated response asking if I wanted a cab at the address and sent right away to press 1. I pressed 1. In like 3 minutes, the cab was sitting there waiting for us and I received a text message telling me that. It was like that for the rest of our stay. What a GREAT SERVICE. Uber and Lyft are good in many ways - but they are virtually uncontrollable independent people. At least with a cab company I feel more comfortable-at least as a customer. But cabs have gotten so expensive anymore - it almost forces you to make alternative choices. If ALL cab companies were like this I would switch back. Just got out of cab no. 29 st 2.54am on Saturday 7th July. Our cab driver was AMAZING! Fantastic music, stellar personality, big smile, friendly, honest service. We asked for his business card but he didn't have one. Honestly... This was one of my favourite taxi rides of all time (over 20 years). This man made all of our days! TL:DR driver tried to take advantage of my sick girlfriend completely changed his tune when I came out to pay. Today my girlfriend took a cab home from Oakridge mall area to New Westminster to come home from work after being sick. About 5 minutes into the drive the cab driver exclaimed he had "forgotten" to turn the meter on and was gonna charge a rate of 70 to 80 dollar! Now I get it we are all human we make mistakes the problem is normally when that happens the cab driver turns the meter back on and they get a bigger tip, but no not this guy he never turned the meter back on. I called my girlfriend trying to talk to this driver on speaker who ignored me and payed no attention to my girlfriend trying to get his attention, so I said I would just meet them outside when they got here. When they arrived right away he tried to defend right away by saying he never said 70 to 80 dollars and only 50 which is still a lot considering a normal cab with the fare on cost less then 40$ at this time of the night. After telling him that i would give him 45$ he refused and called his dispatch, while waiting I tried to explain that if i show up to working "forgetting" my tools its my own fault to which he agreed but still refused to take the 45$. At this point I was getting frustrated and his dispatch wasn't answering and a couple people walking by had stop to agree with me and my sick girlfriend. He finally took the 45$ after calling me a few choice words and saying that he would have to pay 10 dollars out of pocket. read more

I would give 5 negative stars or at least 0 if possible. I was left stranded by the Yellow cab driver. No more Yellow cab. I needed to get somewhere quickly before it closed and nearly made it in time but then was stuck locked out at my destination, 2 bags of clothes and 2 other bags bring lugged around. Did the driver go the fastest route? No he went through a construction zone in the opposite direction. Did the driver help me with my bags? Never. Despite this he got a tip! Did the driver wait to see if I could get in or was stuck locked out? Yes....however Did he pick me back up so I could go back where I came from with my stuff? No he drove off after seeing I was stuck locked out! I flagged him, dropping all my stuff on the ground. He stopped briefly, let me open the car door, then drove right off, leaving me stranded there, knowing I was locked out and I needed a ride back. I live in Vancouver and I am extremely grateful to the driver of the 313 Yellow Cab. I need to find him. This afternoon he drop me in a hotel close to where I work. Hours later I found out that my wallet was gone with all my credit cards, driver license and ID's photos, cash etc etc. I went to the hotel and asked the security guard if the Yellow Cab's driver found and left my wallet with them and to my beautiful surprise: he did it!!! I dropped it in the wet street (raining in Vancouver!!!). I will try to find him to express my gratitude. I will be a Yellow Cab's client forever. read more

Now I don't own a car unfortunately, so sometimes I need to rely on cabs when I need to get somewhere that public transit can not access. Most of the time I've had a neutral experience with Yellow Cab as they get me where I need to go in a timely manner. However, there have been two occasions, particularly last evening, where I felt that that the cab companies in Vancouver are absolutely useless. No surprise there since the ratings for this company are so low. I've had a driver refusing to listen to my request of taking a certain route which ended up being an $80 ride when it should've been $50 at most. Last evening, I found out that past midnight they do not offer any service other than in the heart downtown or if you're heading towards the airport. So the next time you're stranded at your friend's house for a party past midnight, expect to stay over since you won't be picked up unless you want to go to the airport for a special rate! read more

This cab driver showed up to take my mother to the ferry, and I wanted to pre pay, and he said he wouldn't take anything less than $70.00 CAD to take her to the ferry from my place which is a 20 minute drive. In the past year, I've had to take many cabs early in the morning (4:30 AM) multiple times a week to get to work. As in, the cab drivers have started to recognize me when they show up at my house. While I previously had multiple bad experiences with Yellow Cab a few years ago, they seem to have tightened up ship since then. You can now book a ride easily online on their website, and they have GPS tracking (presumably to compete with Uber and Lyft, which will be moving into Vancouver soon). They also call and text you when your cab's arrived so you don't miss it. (Which can go a bit overboard when you're being texted, called and emailed to inform you that *ping!* we've confirmed your booking, *ping!* your cab is on its way, *ping!* you can track it with this link, *ping* okay your cab is outside...) The drivers I've had in the past year have all been somewhere on the spectrum between courteous and friendly. They don't bother me if I pull out my phone instead of speaking. If I sit beside them without it, most will try to strike up friendly conversation, maybe put on some upbeat music and tell me they'll give me time to wake up at my own pace. Some of the conversations I've gotten into with my drivers have been quite fun, like the one who told me all about the places he's visited around the world. It's honestly a good way to start the day. I've never met anyone rude, or had problems paying. (The dispatchers sound like they're dead inside, but that's no big deal when you're working an awful, probably minimum-wage job.) I feel like most people only write a review for a cab company when they've had a terrible experience, which may account for the overall rating on here. Or maybe I've just been lucky. But yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about trying to get a cab from the airport or whatever if you're in town. I'd say you're more likely to have an unremarkable experience than not. read more

Thieves and scammers. I was picked up from the airport by cab Y163 at 1:50am on Tuesday Feb 12. But before leaving, driver picked up another passenger - from the back of the line and without my permission - claiming this was allowed when there's a long lineup (subsequently proven a lie from a call to YVR Airport Authority). He then dropped me off 5 km away, and refused to give change from a $20, claiming this amount was standard for dropoffs in that zone - even though he had a second passenger who he was also charging a full fare. I called Yellow's complaints number on the cab and guess what - nobody answered and the voice mail was full. Incidentally, he also was speeding in a snowstorm (70 in a 50 zone over the Arthur Laing Bridge), and the cab was revoltingly filthy. This was theft, a safety violation, a breach of their airport contract and a great reminder why Vancouver taxis are corrupt and run by criminals from Surrey - I never take taxis, and regret this slip but had no choice since transit to airport closes at 1am. Submitted a complaint to police and YVR...hopefully one day soon the NDP government will stop folding like a cheap suit for the taxi cartels and finally bring Uber to BC to shut down this company and their criminal drivers - good riddance to bad rubbish. read more

I didn't find any flaw in the service-hiring my cab to the airport (one day prior to departure) on the phone was quick and I immediately got a text with the details of my reservation. You call and when they finally answer (the automated system was not assigning the right address) they will tell you that we are pretty busy so if you don't get your pick up in next 15 to 20 min call us back. Great news is they text you a link to see where your driver. Even better, 3 minutes later the driver is few blocks and way. Oh but wait, the driver decides to pick someone else and now you get assigned another driver. Who does the same thing! I've a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Yellow Cab Company. More often than not, they show up at our door on time and without any issues, but there have been a number of incidents that have chapped my arse and I feel the need to explain. When I first started coming to Vancouver, Yellow Cab became the main cab company to pick me up from the airport and deliver me home. The service was friendly enough but there have been a couple of times when I made the newbie mistake of blabbing to them that I was new to the city and blah blah blah. Next thing you know, I am being taken on a whirlwind tour of the city and wondering why the heck it is taking me so long to get home! A cab ride from the airport to our place should never cost more than 30 bucks, tip included. Myself and a few out of town friends of mine have been unfortunate enough to take the 'tourist' route to our place and have paid upwards of 50 dollars. Note to self: keep mouth shut when in cab! Now that I am aware of the scam that tourists are plagued with, and no longer being a tourist myself, I use Yellow Cab to pick us up from our place to dinner or a club or wherever it might be. You might call me a glutton for punishment, but the Yellow Cab headquarters is quite close to my home so, presumably, it shouldn't take them very long to get here. The odd occasion has left us waiting in the lobby for 15 minutes while cab after cab passes and we realize that whether we book a cab or not, we should just forget it and hail one from the street. Live and learn I suppose. I will likely continue to use Yellow Cab because, as mentioned, more often than not, they are a reliable form of transportation! read more

Once again I had a nightmare taxi ride. Car number y66 did not like the voucher I use which I have been using since November when we got here for medical. He got on the radio with his dispatch told him he did not want to take me and to make sure that no other driver comes to pick me up. Dispatch told him to take me to my destination, and while on the way I had called my medical insurance. While I was on the phone with them the driver started taunting me being verbally abusive and saying I'm so scared. As I got out of the taxi cab he said I will never get another cab ride in Vancouver again. I called yellow cab to let them know what just happened and the dispatch also would not take my complaint and said that everything was recorded on my taxi ride and he seen no cause for concern. That in itself is concerning as obviously this company just doesn't care how the drivers treat their most vulnerable customers. read more

A tale of two cities: Edinburgh vs. Vancouver. The impression left upon me by my taxi ride from Edinburgh airport to Marchmont Crescent: -Clean -Courteous -Safe -Fixed rate -A pleasant journey that was made memorable by some lighthearted banter with the driver. Arriving at the Vancouver airport many weeks later, my taxi ride to Yaletown went like this: -The taxi was one fare away from utter ruin, and looked distinctly seedy. -The driver hadn't bathed in days, wore loose-fitting sandals on his repulsively filthy feet, and looked as reputable as a pederast. -The taxi hadn't been cleaned in ages, and was appallingly filthy. I had to keep the window down in order to draw a breath of unmolested air. -The rules of the road were anyone's responsibility but the driver's, with his creaking hulk of a vehicle effortlessly sailing through red lights with abandon. -The driver had as much of a grasp of English as I have of ancient Aramaic, and he was adamantly opposed to any conviviality. -Despite his disdain for the rules of the road, and reluctance to communicate in English, he came alive in a wondrous bloom of vitality when flensing me on the cab fare. As endearing an experience as being mugged. If you live downtown, you'll have a vast body of negative encounters with these drivers, and YC seem to insist on hiring individuals who suddenly turn into blind imbeciles when placed behind a steering wheel. read more

Pre-booked a taxi for late morning on a Sunday. I dutifully waited outside my West End address for 20 mins. and the cab never showed. No communication on the smartphone; I ended up having to make alternative arrangements. I phoned the dispatch office later in the day, and they were quite dismissive and rude. They insisted the driver showed up, but as I was standing outside in the street, I think I would have known. For a taxi service, I find this unforgivable. And I still cannot get over how rude the afternoon dispatcher was. So I think you have to ask yourself: Is this a business I want to patronize? Awful cab company not only was I double billed a number of times on my mastercard, today left my wallet in a cab that was waiting for a call on Drake st git dropped off on hastings. One min later I call to tell them my wallet was in the backseat. They made no effort to fi d out what cab this was even though he would of been number 1 at 7 am where he was sitting this morning. Tried calling back the man was just rude. 500 a month I give thus company in cab money. It's now been 4 hours and nothing from them. Before I sign off most of there cabs have a awful odor, one I had to get out of it was so bad. So sad. I just found out that when you leave your bag in a car the driver is supposed to bring it back to you. The cab I had to take to pick up my luggage said that it's the Law. My bag has my business card on it with my phone number. I got out of the car at 9:20 am ran into work and realized at Noon that I didn't have my bag. Meanwhile no one called me. In fact, I called the office and they said they would call me back. 2.5 hours later I call them and they tell me I have to pick up my bag. I ask if there's a car in the area and I'll just take that. I was told "no" there are no cars in your area." So I said can you just send me one since I need a cab. She said I doubt it and will transfer you to dispatch, then she hung up. I hung up thinking it was a mistake. She again told me I'd have to pick it and if I arrived after 7 where to get it. It was 3:46 and I had told her I needed to be at the airport til 5. I asked is she could transfer me, she said yes and hung up again. I'm the 99% kind person. I wasn't even frustrated cause I thought it was my fault. I went to the front desk of where I was, they called me a cab. When I went to pick up the bag I was sitting in the entry way with my business card and photo on it. I said I'm Fresh and I'm here to pick up my bag. How many people would come in and say they are "Fresh" and have my photo on my bag? They asked me to copy my ID and for a signature. When I get back in my cab the driver asks me if I just picked up that bag. I explained I left it in the taxi in the morning. He says "It's the law for them to drop it off to you!" Now I'm freaked because not only did they not call me when my ID and phone number was on the bag, now they have copy of my ID and signature and I'm wondering if I just got caught in an ID scam!! To be honest, I would have lived if my bag was lost. This however is not what I wanted to leave on my mind so now I have to follow up and report them which I really did not plan on doing on my day off tomorrow!! read more

The driver charged me twice for the same trip! He asked for payment at the end of the trip, I told him he could charge my credit card already available through the ecab application. He said he preferred that I pay directly and that he was not going to use the ecab app. I handed him my credit card. 2 minutes later I received an invoice from ecab . He also charged me through the app. I have called and emailed yelow cab to complain. I haven't yet been reimbursed and they don't even apologize. They simply ignore my requests! We were concerned that our cab would not pick us up because of the awful reviews, but it came right on time! We booked the cab on their website the night before for a 4:45 am pick up on Wednesday morning. Pick up was quick. Cab came right to our door. Arrived at our destination quickly. Cab fair was very reasonable. Just under $10 for a ride from a residence in downtown Vancouver to the Pacific Central Station. Paid with credit card. No complaints here! There are a lot of cabs roaming around in the morning around 4:30-5 am, so it might be okay to just flag one down without first reserving. read more

This is a garbage service. I see these guys all the time when I'm driving to or from work in downtown Vancouver, Yellow Cab drivers are the most reckless and dangerous on the road. Frequently weaving in between traffic, or tail gating, or slamming on breaks -- after cutting you off of course. When I do use the service the drivers are rude, yell into their cell phones or at other cab drivers. Though Toyota Priuses are reasonably nice cars, these yellow cab ones are always disgusting, dirty, and dingy -- somehow perpetually damp even in the heat of summer. At least they make reasonable time maybe 20% of the time though. They somehow drive recklessly and get you there late -- and then charge you close to $50 for the privilege. The agent told me the driver will arrive within a certain time frame and will give me a call once he arrives. No one called or came. Ended up having to find last minute arrangement. Pre-booked an early morning airport transfer with this company. Not only did they not show up but they also didn't have the manners to call. In the end I had to run around and hail down a cab - I was lucky to get my flight. What can I say about yellow cab that has not already been said? Clearly if I was able to give NO stars I would. All those who possess a drivers license in this city, I implore you to become a member of all the care sharing companies in Vancouver. I tell you UBER cannot get here quick enough. There is no reason for this company to STILL be in business. The drivers are rude, obnoxious, often talking on the phone, their driving borders on dangerous, sometimes their hygiene is questionable at best but worst of all they are money hungry and offer ZERO customer service. Today, confirmed for me that there is no need for me ever to take another taxi in this city unless it's absolutely necessary. First off my very good friends tried to get a taxi at VGH and that was a test in patience. Both these women are in their 70s, one of which just had some major major lung surgery and all they wanted to do was get to their next destination. At the entrance of the hospital there were two taxis. Both were just sitting in their cabs, none of them made any effort to help these two women who were saddled down with bags and showed no desire to take them. Both cab drivers showed no interest in taking them. After a few words rude one of the drivers took them. So, now they're at Kingsgate Mall, they called for a taxi and where advised it would be there shortly. I arrive there and wait with them. After more than a half hour, still no cab! So now of course another call is made where of course we're on hold for a minimum of ten minutes. Finally we get the dispatcher who advises us that they will send one out as soon as possible. At this point, I'm fed up! Luckily for me someone has just left a Car2go Mercedes GLA which seats four. YIPPEEE! I quickly reserve and run up the street. Upon getting back to Kingsgate Mall the cab pulls in behind me. The problem as I see it is that most of the taxis are either sitting at the airport, hoping desperately for customers going downtown or they're sitting out front of hotels downtown or circling bars and clubs like sharks. Tips: 1. If it's late and you're only going a short distance always lie and say you're going further than you are - they're more likely to get there faster. I've had drivers get pissed off with me because I wasn't going far enough. 2. Pay by card - it pisses them off. 3. No service, no tip! I always have plenty of change and small bills so you can pay them the exact amount if not paying by card. REMEMBER! 1. You can call Yellow Cab and complain all you want but they do not care. Right now, they're mostly the only game in town. 2. Customer service is NOT in their vocabulary. 3. I don't believe that Yellow Cab has any idea who are driving their vehicles - there is so much subletting and leasing I don't know if they can really keep track. 4. I had a horrible experience with Yellow cab. The agency assigned me a driver who was on a break. Give ME a break... from ever using your services or recommending your services to anyone. First time visitor lost on the streets with luggage= Me. Thankfully, a Black Top Cab came to my rescue after I had waited for 45min for Yellow Cab that never arrived. I tried calling Yellow Cab but the little kid on the phone was too busy feeling butt hurt THAT I was having an issue. She came off defensive which was not helpful to either of us. Bad customer service. Whatever changes that she made to my original request also kept sending me texts saying that I had canceled the request, then placed a request for Yellow cab several times. I wish I could give Yellow Cab a rating out of 5, but when a cab doesn't pick you up on multiple events, it's difficult to even give them one star. The mission and vision of this company is convenience over customer loyalty. Rather than picking up a customer who has an account number, they would prefer to pick up the nearest bystander. In the last two instances I have tried to use them this month, both times I waited an hour to end up taking an alternative route home. To make matters even worse, at the 30 minute point I called to inquire about my cab to the receiving end of apathy and a lack of resolution. To make matters even worse, I stopped 5 Yellow Cabs en route and they all asked where I was going, deemed it "not far enough" (downtown to olympic village) and refused my ride. Having used taxi chits all over the country for business travel, this is the FIRST company I have had difficulty finding a ride. I have a series of next steps in place to publicize my dissatisfaction and reduce their customer base. For anyone reading this review, my biggest recommendation is to go with Black Top Cabs. I have had more success having them take me home, regardless of the distance or cost. read more
