It has a lovely and cosy bar area with a good selection of ales. Our room was on the ground floor and was not far from the gents toilet! However, it was really quiet and there was a little corridor between room and toilet. The room smelt a bit fusty but it is over 200 years old and it was very clean. The breakfast was lovely, very fresh tasting. Good selection of cereals as well. There is parking directly opposite the pub. It is about 5mins walk from lots of restaurants and pubs. There is also an old fashioned sweet shop across the road from the pub, has an amazing range. Nice place to stay to explore the surrounding area.

Today was a run and I was starving hungry and ready for a big feed. I was not disappointed - the fish finger sandwich was huge and came with great salt and pepper fries. I did leave some of the granary roll as it was just a bit much for me. The staff are always friendly, and there is an excellent range of beers. There are some good sunny, quiet outdoor seating spots and muddy boots and dogs are welcome. It does have a bit of a chain feel to it, however it's not really an issue as the location, food and beer are great.

Now any visit to the Peak District really should involve a visit to Castleton. Mam Tor (a large…read morehill with an impressive landslide and spectacular views), three caverns (one with a boat ride!) and a castle. The Castle Pub sits.... rather as you'd expect directly at the base of the hill from the actual Castle. Smack in the middle of all the walk routes for the area, a 2 minute walk from the most impressive of the caverns and a 2 minute drive (or a ten minute uphill walk) from Mam Torr. Now as to the pub, parking is costly as the nearest spaces are the "£4 for as many hours" cavern parking, but if you don't mine the walk theres free parking on the outskirts of town. You'll arrive at a pub with a huge amount of outside seating (the thing that sold me to it initially, over it nearest neighbours. When the temperature dipped a bit (as its want to in april) we headed inside. The pub is remarkably intimate despite its size, lots of side rooms warmed by real wood fires and enclosed in old fashioned dark wood beams. The food, delivered swiftly despite the busy bar was spectacular (though perhaps on the pricey side for the nicest options on the menu). The portions were of a good size and everything was delicious. We felt content to lounge by the fire long after our meal without being hurried along. I went away very full and very happy with the quality of service. In fact had i been on more than a day trip i could even have stayed, the pub runs an inn with private lounge areas for residents as well !! The only advice i think i owe it to readers to give is don't go eating there if you want to go climbing after, they will fill you with food and good ale and you won't ever want to leave!

Kitchen had all the equipment you would ever need as well as useful bits like olive oil, sugar etc which were nice touches. Highly reasonable prices and the owners were really helpful and friendly - although also left you alone to enjoy your holiday. I would definitely return!

They have all mod cons and laundry facilities are located on site. We stayed there for New Year for a week and had a lovely time, the locals are friendly and in the cottage there is a book which recommends local places to visit and where to eat. The price of the cottages is excellent value and worth every penny. The farm is owned by a local family and were very efficient in all dealings for booking the cottages. Ideal for weekend breaks also. We spend seven days there and could have stayed another week theres so much to do. The cottage we stayed in is upsidedown so we slept downstairs. This is excellent as you can eat your breakfast upstairs and see the beautiful views from the windows.

The good news is that the beer is still top quality, albeit pricey (£3.50 a pint), and the roaring open fire was very welcome on a grungy day like today. Sadly though, the interior designers have been hard at work, and turned this place into a somewhat sterile experience with the emphasis more on food (expensive) and coffee than beer. I guess a lot of people will love this restaurpub, but to me it's mock tudor, and not the real thing. It's the sort of pub that foreign tourists go in because the real pubs look a bit too intimidating. The stone flags remain, but the soul has gone. Having said all that, and call me a hypocrite if you want, I'd probably go here again at some point as the beer was good.....but not before I'd been to a few other pubs in the area first.

The pub is really nicely decorated with a friendly welcoming landlord. If the rooms they have available are as nice as the decor of the pub then this could well be the perfect place to stay for a walking holiday in the peak district.
