Total local townie diner. I'll admit that I was a little freaked out by how run down the place is...it's clearly been there for a long time. Big John runs the joint and pointed us to a table when it was finally available. Yes - it was busy and we arrived at just the wrong time...when every table was taken. But several turned over and we noticed that they were a little short staffed, so we just hung around since there was no big rush. The food was actually awesome. I had an egg and cheese sandwich with a side of potatoes; my companion had the Big John's breakfast - a nice, big plate of toast, 3 eggs and a ton of bacon. Not greasy at all. Oh...and the prices are insanely low. They have dinner specials daily that are $6!! That's crazy. These are good people that make good food. read more

Horrible horrible horrible. If you're not a local resident of the town they tamper with your food meaning they give you raw uncooked bacon when you ask for extra crispy they don't give you home fries . No home fries $20 worth of one person's breakfast combination called the Big John three eggs some toast bacon and home fries it's 10.90 I gave her $20. so she got a $9 tip..for the lady and then called her up about it why don't I have home fries oh do you want to come back when I left 2 minutes prior I called because I have to let them know they are never getting my business again every single time I go there which is only been about a dozen there's been raw food or raw eggs or uncooked eggs or eggs with eggshells in it like is it deliberate because I'm not a local resident of fort Edward New York. I recommend not going there!! The Owner John is very abusive to his help. He yells at them and degrade them in front of customers. I couldn't believe it. I was there and watched his bad display of behavior it was unbelievable!! Food is OK. I don't care how good the food is if the Owner is like that!! I think he is MENTAL the way he treats people!! Not a nice man!! One of the waitresses there have a little bit to be desired especially the one called Christina. She is very rude. Her attitude was terrible!! Came here for breakfast with my wife and another couple that are regulars here. The place is really pretty run down and a little "divey" but not unclean and the food was very good and quite inexpensive. Service was fast and friendly. Really a place for locals and not so much geared for touristy types. The place is pretty cramped so not the best for large groups but worth checking out for a couple or two. I'd probably go back if in town again and maybe try dinner or lunch next time. read more

Having read the other reviews, we were looking forward to having our Sunday breakfast at Ye Old Fort Diner. When we arrived, we were surprised to see how run down the place looked, as noted in the review by Jody W. Undaunted and hungry, we entered the diner to find ourselves standing in front of a lunch counter in a very small space surrounded by a few tables. I was within a few feet of the waitress and we made eye contact, and I said "Hello!". She looked away from me quickly without a word and turned to walk into the kitchen. The place was fairly full, but not busy. Although I also saw an older man, who clearly worked there ("Big John"?), and a woman who worked the cash register who could hardly have helped but notice the four of us standing there awkwardly waiting, no one acknowledged our presence for the ten minutes we waited, watching the seated patrons glance at us and then ignore us. Grizzly Adams, a TV show from the 1970s played on the TV set above the counter, although no one was watching making the place feel lost in time. There were many photos and artifacts on the walls, which I would have liked to explore further, including a sign next to the kitchen door which read "This building has been condemned". After the complete lack of a response to we four very normal non-threatening middle aged people, my brother suggested that we leave. We left. The local townies decided to keep the place to themselves, and they can have it. I have never felt so unwelcome in a public eating establishment in my life. read more

Never had a bad meal there but have had two odd occurrences at breakfast. One time I ordered scrambled eggs and out came a fried egg chopped up. When I reminded the waitress I'd ordered scrambled , she went back to the kitchen only to return to tell me that, "that's how we make scrambled eggs"- ah...yeah. Yesterday ordered the Big John and a single pancake. It was 11:30 am and they say they service breakfast all day, so I was surprised to be told by our server that the cook said no more pancakes or French Toast as it was getting close to lunch?! On New Year's Day? When most of us are just rolling out of bed? Other patrons were asking for pancakes and getting the same response, so it wasn't just a weird request from one person. Stopped in on a Sunday evening and the place was packed with locals, usually a good sign and this was no exception. We had the hot roast turkey open faced sandwich with gravy and French fries and the open faced roast pork sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy and both were top notch. Good home cooking. The staff were very friendly and working their butts off. We highly recommend this diner. The food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. read more

My mom and I came here for a Saturday brunch and we were so pleasantly surprised at the quality, quantity,value and how amazingly nice the employees were! We both had the French Toast, thick cut and perfectly cooked. The bacon was plentiful and crispy, the strawberries on the top of my French toast were delicious, perfect accompaniment.
