I went to a Paint and Sip event thru PaintNite.com in West Orange NJ with my sister and it was so much fun! I expected it to be fun because I was out with my sister and we ALWAYS have fun, even in boring, slightly uncomfortable environments. But we didn't even have to tap into our sisterly connection to generate a fun time. It was a naturally fun environment already. The artist instructing the class, Dave, was hilarious. He was more like an MC that just so happen to know how to paint. My sister and I are going again sometime this week because it was so much fun. I highly recommend it. I did Paint Nite on 1/20/14 with Nancy Hoffmann at the Astoria Ditmars Station Pub in Queens, NY. Signing up was easy, especially with a Groupon code, but paintings fill up fast, especially in Manhattan. The location was good in that the waitresses at the bar were great and the food was delicious. However, the lack of lighting at the venue meant that I had to basically paint in the dark. My canvas was back-lit so I was forced to hold my phone flashlight up through most of the process in order to see ANYTHING at all. Even though my picture turned out okay, I think it was probably due more to the fact that the skill required for it was incredibly low than anything else. Paint Nite just wasn't an enjoyable experience and was a waste of time, money, and materials. I went home with a picture I'm embarrassed to show others (I had half a mind to just leave it on the train) and will probably toss in the trash. read more

Lots of fun! I attended a Paint Nite at Woodrows with some of my girlfriends, and we had a wonderful time. We're not painters by a long shot, and Shannon's instructions helped us to make something that actually looked good. We really had a terrific time and it was a great alternative Saturday night activity--instead of just drinking at a bar, let your inner artist out and make something! I give PaintNite 4 stars, and I would give 5 stars if it weren't for the venue! Woodrows was very cramped and it was sometimes difficult to see what Shannon was doing. You can order drinks and food but you have to pay extra. Usually, tickets are $65/person but you can get a ticket on groupon for $35. The instructors are laid back and fun. I purchased a groupon deal and came to paint nite at Essex restaurant. I wanted to try something different and never painted before. I must say I enjoyed myself and the venue was nice. It was held during happy hour so all the drinks were half off. The instructor was nice and accommodating. She went around to all tables and helped out and very encouraging. The only con is that they stuff so many people in the venue you could barely move. I would give it another go. It's also great to have something you made to go home with and hang :). I'm always up for crafts and/or plants. That said this wasn't the best event. Consider: 1. Cost. I got a groupon which brought the normally 65 dollars per ticket down to like 35 (25 for a Groupon plus 10 for supplies). No food or drinks are covered. Our host started out by saying how nice it was E Bar was hosting us, and we should try their delicious food to thank them, I suppose. But if I paid ten dollars for supplies, what was the $55 per person for? Craftjam has its own space and is cheaper. Tips are not included. This was expensive for an event lasting less than an hour. 2. Cancellations. The first time I tried to book, our event was cancelled the day of the event. They offer a lot of fun themes, but this is meaningless if you wait for a fun theme (like the lake one), and then it is cancelled. I eventually just signed up for Wine Garden. If you book far in advance to get a cute theme, it's super disappointing. 3. Fun. Or rather the lack of it. There were 8 people in our class. We had to take an oath about having fun. No one is drunk enough on a Monday night at 7pm for that. I guess it was supposed to be funny but it was just weird. Our instructor was weirdly formal. Like, she kept explaining how she had to do things. She had to take pictures for Instagram. We had to hold the photo props. She had to say the oath. Weirdly formal and corporate. It's hard to have fun when you are being asked to pose for pictures every five minutes. It felt like a marketing event. We were told if we didn't want our pictures taken we could hold a prop in front of our faces. I just want to make a plant garden in peace, without being asked what I'm naming my garden. Also, my boyfriend only wanted one of his plants, so I took the other two to create a lush tropical jungle. We felt a little judged for disregarding the three plant standard, and eschewing the wine garden theme. Which really seemed to violate the aforementioned oath. It was like forced fun meets tepid enthusiasm and strict adherence to rules. We finished up our plants in about 50 minutes or less if you subtract the late start time and boring lecture about the history of plant/paint nite. Of course, before we could go we had to take pictures in front of the plant nite sign, and then readjust our plants for a better angle for the camera. For such an expensive event, I don't want to be pressured into free marketing at every turn. read more

I really wanted to try this out. Especially since I'm seeing more and more people do it. My friends bought the tickets and wondered how this experience would be since I'm not exactly and artistic person. Since it's held in a bar/restaurant, a drink can be somewhat pricey (especially since I just wanted a coke). But this experience was definitely a great experience. I think one of the best part was that there was no pressure to have the painting look exactly as how it looked online. There are guidelines, but essentially how you paint it should fit with the painter's personality. Although the instructor asked us to paint with a certain color, there were times that I chose to use a different color. But I wasn't discouraged to paint differently. The teacher even said the colors looked great. I love the environment that the teacher created. No pressure, just fun. I would love to do this again. Ticket is somewhat pricey but I'll try to find discounts the next time. read more

I'm not really sure how anyone paints through Paint nite.. My friend bought a session via Groupon back in February so we could do this as part of my bachelorette party. 8 months and FOUR cancellations later, we still have yet to paint. The reasons for cancelling were the venue not working out (should have done due diligence on venues in advance) and the next three times due to low ticket sales (why should paying customers be penalized for Paint Nite not selling enough tickets?) It's exceedingly hard to get my and my girlfriends' schedules aligned, so the constant cancellation is so frustrating. All Paint Nite does is send an email announcing the cancellation and asks you to re-book to a different night. After the fourth time, I don't have the stomach to schedule and reschedule anymore. If I EVER get to paint, I will leave a review on that experience, but don't think I'll ever get there. And frankly, not sure I want to! read more

I went to my very first paint-nite event this past weekend on Saturday, March 9th at Woodrows, and I must say it won't be my last,,I had a great time! I arrived very early, to make sure I got a good seat. I ordered a salad and glass of wine (pretty pricey). I was not expecting to speng 20 bucks, but regardless, the salad was huge, was delicious and on point, the staff was pretty friendly. Then the event began, the instructor was amazing (Shannon), she was very encouraging, patient, had great energy, and positivity, the dj played really nice music, the wine and creativity was flowing,,,I highly recommend this event, i went solo, and still had a great time!! Had a great time with my coworkers as part of our HR team building program. I wasn't too impressed with the instructor though- we couldn't hear her over the din even w/ her mic on and she totally misguided us on how to do the yellow and greens for the background. I looked at her painting and the one that we were supposed to do posted on the website and I saw she messed up her reds and oranges too. I did Paint Nite about 1-2 months ago in a Astoria Ditmars Station Pub in Astoria. My painting turned out better than expected, not gonna lie, but the experience wasn't that great in the beginning. We were in the back of the bar in a room but the door was wide open and (sitting all the way in the back), I couldn't hear the instructor AT ALL. They eventually ended up closing the door after about 20 minutes but I feel like the choppy beginning hindered my painting from becoming the masterpiece it could have been. The only drawback to this is that the popular paintings, esp. Van Gogh renditions are always filled up :( Fortunately my friend and I were able to get into a Monet waterlilies painting class last month! The artist was named Danielle and she was the best instructor I've ever had. She is super sweet and was kind enough to give me some pointers during the class. I prepaid for an Easter painting event weeks in advance. My daughter and I drove over 2 1/2 hours and paid over $13 in tolls to get to the event. When we arrived the venue was closed and no one ever showed up. There were no signs and no one answered the phone. When I got home I found a lame email that hd been sent less than 24 hours earlier saying the event was cancelled. This is absolutely unacceptable!! What a horrible way to do business. I'm owed almost $30 and the company has done nothing I got my money back from Groupon and I'm now contesting the charges on my credit card and I'm going to file a claim with the Better Business Bureau do not book any events with them it's a scam they cancel the event before they happen constantly and I've now heard of several other people that happen to how do you cancel event with 15 people?! read more

The owner of the franchise was present and is EXTREMELY creepy. He asked personal questions (age, employment, residence), leaned in close, and put his hands on me and my younger sister multiple times. Finally I asked him to please not touch me and he pretended he didn't hear (we were practically cheek to cheek) and changed the subject to painting technique. I will not be supporting this business and I imagine he harasses his employees as well. The instructor was nice but began the "lesson" with an irrelevant tangent about spirit animals instead of using the time to explain what we would be doing. She rushed through a key and tricky point of painting the moon, and sometimes gave crucial instructions late in the process (ex. "cover the entire canvas"). In my opinion, these types of events would run smoother with more demonstration/explanation of the next stage rather than all follow along as the instructor goes. We can't look at two places at once and this slows everything down. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. If I could give a zero, I would. My sister and I spent months, and I mean months, planning a 50th birthday surprise day of activities for our mom. I flew in from Colorado to NYC to surprise her. When we came across the Paint Nite event, hosted at the Amarachi (who had nothing to do with this bad experience FYI) we were thrilled. This is exactly what we were hoping for. We literally planned our whole birthday day surprise around this event, being held on a Saturday at 1 p.m. We planned our brunch location around the event, we planned the massage and dinner locations around the event. Everything. We arrive at 12:55 p.m. to the event. Turns out it was cancelled. My sister, who purchased her tickets from Groupon and paid an extra $60 on the Paint Nite website as part of their "process," which is also BS if you ask me, had NEVER received an email about this cancellation. And trust me, we triple, quadruple checked if she'd received one. Not a single email about the cancellation. When we arrived, the Amarchi place informed us that the Paint Nite people cancelled due to low number of event participants. Are you serious?!? You could imagine our anger at knowing this especially given that our whole day was shot to hell. A special birthday, a day that I literally traveled to NYC for. With all that being said, I'm sure this is a wonderful event, however be cautious of them cancelling and not ever calling. read more

I have always liked these events but tonight changed everything. I drove an hour to get to plant night and brought 6 people. There were only 5 open seats and they were all at different tables. I told the host and she saw we had small kids and she stood there and said she didn't know what to do. She was so unhelpful and rude. I have never met a host that was so unprofessional and had no answers. We stood there with no seats while she went through the instructions. Since we had no seats we ended up having to leave and drive the hour home. They also used a space in the basement of a pizza place. It was small and cramped and to be honest a little scary looking. After having planned for weeks for a friends birthday, the event was cancelled very last minute. My friends and I got there 45 minutes early, and saw the instructor with all the supplies out, but not set up on the tables yet so we couldn't pick a spot (which was fine because we were pretty early). Around 20 minutes before it was supposed to start, there was still no supplies set up, and the instructor then packed it up without a word and left. We thought that maybe she had just forgotten a few things in her car, and it had to be all packed up to be moved to the tables anyways, so we didn't think too much of it. More and more people showed up, and the staff where it was held started to wonder where the instructor was. 10 minutes after the event was supposed to start, we got an email saying it had been rescheduled. I get that things happen, but the instructor should have told us that it was rescheduled instead of just leaving, or if she didn't want to tell everyone at least tell the venue staff so they could tell everyone who showed up. There should also be a price reduction, as many people had already paid 20$ for parking, and we had been waiting for an hour with no word. Overall this was handled extremely poorly, and I will be going to a different company for my next paint night. read more

I purchased a Groupon for 4 people and we had an amazing time. The instructor moved at a moderate pace and was extremely helpful. Besides the fun painting i would like to say the best part was the oath not to be upset if our painting was not to our liking, the birthday singing since my birthday is Sunday and the jokes. Our painting looked nothing alike and that's what made it so fun. We had a blast and i plan on doing this again very soon. Bought a living social deal and was excited to try another class. Most of the paintings were already sold out so I had to book mine a month ahead. The class was at Die Koelner Bierhalle and we painted ice cream cones. I don't know if it was the venue or the instructor or just a combination of both but it definitely did not live up to my first experience with paint nite. First of all, there was no air conditioning and outside was about 90 degrees. They did not open the doors either. The instructor had a mic on but I could barely hear her and I was sitting in the front. She was not as instructional as Kristin. I understand that the class was only for two hours but you cannot start the class 10-15 minutes late and expect people to finish their artwork in the same allotted time. I felt rushed at the end and needed more paint but they already put it away. I just hope paint nite picks better venues with ac in the future. read more

EDIT: This issue has been escalated and I am glad to say that Paint Nite does indeed take its customers seriously. However, in the time it took them to respond via email, I have already made plans (this event was for friday night). I will be holding on to my tickets for the next time they paint what I like. I shouldn't have to wait and lose my spot because Paint Nite is too cheap to employ more than one guy to respond to all the questions! Here's my beef: Groupon has a deal on Paint Nite: Yippee! I have never done this before and would love to get introduced. I check Paint Nite's website for their paintings and see that there is ONE painting that I LOVE and want to paint. There are 2 spots left. I RUSH back to Groupon and purchase the deals and RUSH back to Paint Nite and see that the 2 seats are still there. Today, I thought was my lucky day. I input the voucher code and I get this message: We apologize but all promo tickets have been sold for this event. Please choose a different event to use your promo tickets. EXCUSE ME? I scour the website looking for an explanation for this inferior "promo ticket" status that prevents me from booking the spots I want. I get NOTHING. I am forced to use their "contact me" which goes into the abyss of questions. First, I get a automated email response. Next I get a human asking me to explain further. WHY, OH WHY are we doing this via EMAIL? I need to just get it over with. I might as well just walk over to your locations and speak to someone directly! As of right now, I have exchanged about 4 emails with "Chris" and have gotten Nowhere. I wasted my time and money. I really had hoped such an established organization would have better quality control and customer service. I am disappointed but this painting is just not worth my time and money. It has been exactly one hour since my first request email for help has been sent, and I'm no closer to my painting. :( read more

In theory, their "paint nite's" sounded so fun. So much so that we invited a few friends to join us for one. Needless to say, they cancelled on us literally 6 minutes prior to the event (over an email). We all paid for sitters and were left high and dry. To "make up for it," they rescheduled us for another one a few months later. By this time, we had moved 2 hours outside the city. Again, we got sitters, asked the same couple to join us, and had everything set. When we got there, they not only cancelled, but did not even notify us that there ever was a cancellation. (I have the email confirming that we were signed up). To make matters worse, for almost a year no one had the courtesy to even ANSWER our emails to them. We had to contact groupon to contact their company, and then finally they responded. Pure frustration and agony dealing with this company... if you don't mind just showing up and taking your chances go ahead. I'm sure if they show it's fun. Dropping my review to three stars. I'd give my second experience two stars but had a great time my first time around so it's evening out to three... My first paint nite experience was at Essex with a couple friends. So fun, minus the extremely tight quarters. The instructors really hammer home the paint creatively and emphasize that it's ok to "go rogue" on your painting which is nice. Second time around...yikes. I went last night with four friends to Saloon. We got there around 6:50 for the session starting at 7. There were ZERO seats left. ZERO. And there were a bunch of people still coming in after my group. I was really put off by the fact that people were saving four seats together at a time when their whole group wasn't there. You snooze, you lose, sorry. Anyway, the people running the show had no clue what to do and seemed surprised when more and more people showed up. There is a check in list, so wouldn't you count it? Not to mention one of my friends was already "checked in" before we got there which was strange...anyway, we were told that they were going to set up makeshift spots for us. Fine. What we were also told is that because of the confusion we would get a voucher for another paint nite free of charge. Fine. Well, these makeshift seats required some of us to turn around while watching the instructor and we didn't have the tools that the people who were in the actual seats had. We had to keep asking and asking. The session itself was fun, the instructor was great. After the session we asked the assistant how we would obtain our free voucher and she acted like she had no idea what we were talking about. When we reminded her what she promised us she said that she did not say that and it was only if they couldn't find seats for us. Whatever. Just amateur hour all around. I attended a Paint Nite class in Bowlmar - Luna Lounge which I purchased through a groupon. I went in a group of 3 and I must say I really enjoyed myself. I would definitely recommend this for girls night and I would go again as well. I really enjoyed myself and was very proud of my painting afterwards. Paint nite is a great concept. I love it. I have done it numerous times and its always a lot of fun. Don't be afraid, everyone comes out with a nice piece of art. I would like to suggest that you choose your location wisely. Not all bars and restaurants are the same. Some places really cater to you and others could care less if your there or not. I went to the ditmars station pub and did not have a great experience. Lighting was not good and it was hard to get a drink. This past week we painted the Brooklyn bridge at Trattoria Lucia in Bellerose and we were treated well. The servers were on top of our drinks and they were very friendly. Our artist Mandy was exceptional. They had added in a lamp for the back table so light was plentiful. Again, Paint nite is well worth it just choose carefully. read more

I have been to several 'Paint Nites.' Unfortunately, this YAYMAKER remake of the company was disappointing. My class was rushed and nothing like a class. The instructor was already on to step 2 when I was on step one. She only brought these huge thick paintbrushes, and it made it impossible to paint the many thin lines the painting required. I have been to several of these events, and this is the first one where I struggled to make my painting to my liking. read more
