After a couple of emails, the owner, Troy, arrived at our door the same evening for a preliminary consultation. They worked quickly; we got a thorough price in less than 24 hours. Within a week of submitting the quote, they were able to start the project. Outstanding service was provided. Troy and Sue allowed us to select the items we wanted, and we ultimately decided to go with everything on their quote. Even in the sweltering Texas heat, a work that we expected would take a week to complete was finished in just two days by a tiny but incredibly effective team. Troy and his team were nothing short of amazing in many ways. My front yard looked like a barren wasteland, and as soon as Troy came to look at it he pointed out all the potential he saw in how beautiful it could become. I had already spent thousands on a landscaper several years ago so I explained to Troy that I wanted to try native plants this time as well as a few of the changes I had in mind. He spent a lot of time listening and making very valuable suggestions. Unlike the first round of landscaping, I decided to give him my budget, and then let him make the choices of plants. Each idea he ran by me I loved, and it was a very easy process in communication. Unlike my first landscaper, Troy was patient, full of great ideas, friendly, and showed excitement about the project. Troy did a wonderful job taking our scattered thoughts and ideas about making our front yard more drought friendly and turning them into something we love and get lots of positive comments about. And when we let him know that some of the shrubs/perennials they planted in the fall did not survive the winter freeze he quickly evaluated what needed to be replaced and made it happen within a couple of weeks, even during the busy springtime. Both Troy and Sue make working with Yards Apart stress free. They did a great job communicating and keeping us aware of any delays or schedule changes. We loved working with Troy. We had no landscaping to speak of when he started, so he had a blank space to work with. Troy did an excellent job of listening to what we, the homeowners, wanted, while also offering his expertise. We ended up with a yard we get compliments on all the time! And again like I told sue if I knew that my area was out of the the usual area for your company I would of gone with another company but that was never disclosed. The "free" estimates I'm sure I payed for them in my quote. I payed $6000 for this project and several things on the quote were completed but I was charged for them( weed barrier under deck). I guess your company isn't able customer service. I too am sorry I confided in your company and am now out $1000 of dollars and have a deck that is not safe. read more

We indicated that this project should be designed to attract pollinators and birds. Troy, however, is not familiar with native plants and did not communicate that to us. He did not, apparently, do any research about plants to accommodate our request. We had him xeriscape our front yard. We now have various plants growing through a single layer of landscape fabric. One is highly invasive and was growing into the roots of nearby plants. Today we dug those plants up and threw them out. When we contacted him about this problem he came over, said he had never seen anything like it and said he would be going away for a while. That was three weeks ago. We also have to spray areas of our yard covered with river rock since plants are growing up through the landscape fabric. You never know when and if he is going to show up or how long he'll stay. read more

For starters, I was told by the owner that Yards Apart took credit cards and he even described the "little white box you stick .into you cellphone" yet when I asked to pay the second half of my payment, before they completed the work, I was told they don't take credit cards. Had I realized they lied to me during our 1st meeting, they'd not have left with a check for half the job nor been hired. Sadly, I hired them. They'd appear and disappear at will, never giving me notice of when they were coming or going, leaving branches and plant debris al over my already stressed front grass for over a week which upset not only me and my husband but our neighbors, too. The owner never takes notes so his bids may look complete but he does what he wishes and consistently, with me, tried to add more to the bid almost daily. He does what he wishes when he wishes with little to no regard for what we agreed upon or what the bid stated. Plants I asked they not remove were removed and plants I asked them to remove are still growing. The bid included mulching all the beds yet they left the largest bed without any mulch along with two smaller beds, yet half-filled a bed with mulch that I specifically asked not be mulched! Worse, they used a mulch I specifically asked them not to use as my husband and neighbors are allergic. I showed it to them and was stunned, weeks later, to walk out and see our beds filled with it. He told me it wouldn't blow away with a leaf blower so would be easy to clean yet it has blown in our Austin evening wind. The soil he told me he'd use never came, at all. The bid also included hauling off wood from our backyard (it is all still there), removing all plants and debris next to the back fence, and they, too, are all still there. Every plant that was to be trimmed was hacked into no shape, at all. They look as if some large animal chewed them all. My clematis were all destroyed, even the ones in bloom. My Crepe Myrtles in front may never bloom again and look awful, and a huge Crepe Myrtle in the back is now in the shape of a tall stick! No branches, at all and hacked into in places: I am told it will die. Lunch trash and drink cans were left on the days they bothered to show up for me to clean up. Because the job was to last 3 days, in the 2nd week, I put into writing that I didn't want two trees cut out down so they could complete all else as I needed to leave town. They cut the trees anyway. The work was never completed, I paid them in full over 4 months ago. The owner never wrote down a thing I asked for even the two times he returned at the request of my many emails to please complete the job after I paid him. In fact, he made fun of his wife for bugging him about coming back to complete my work! He had the same bid in hand that I did yet seemed amnesiac when it came to finishing or even knowing a thing about it. Finally he did return after the 4 months of being paid in full, of coming back twice to see what wasn't completed, but with the idea to only cut that Crape Myrtle into a stick! I told him not to return without my stepping stones and without giving me warning and then wrote it but he showed up, anyway. 1/3 of the work is not, and will never be, done. When I wrote him that 1/3rd of the work was not complete, I got no apology or offer to repay me 1/3rd of the money but I did get something close to this: we want to offer you the best quality of landscape work available! Finishing the work would have brought that closer to a possibility but that didn't seem to cross his mind. which still astonished me! I was taken. We have now had to hire another company to try to salvage our once lovely yard. And two of our neighbors are very upset as our yard reflects on their yard. We always had people stop to tell us what a lovely yard we had but now they ask what ruined it. I tell them WHO ruined it. I've never been treated so unprofessionally! We treat all workers very well, usually pay ahead and in 22 years have never had a company leave the work unfinished or done in a way that wasn't just as we discussed until Yards Apart! I've never submitted a poor review about anyone before at any site because I've always been treated professionally by people who care about their work and use us for good references. Yards Apart isn't someone I'd rehire or recommend to anyone for anything, sadly, but they made the choice to do a poor and incomplete job. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY. I had a Terrible experience. After taking my deposit for a 3 day job, I was met with constant excuses for only 4 hours work and a bit of edging and a mess of a yard after 4 days. The WORST was the owner called me said his wife had misused my deposit and my job could not be finished unless I gave them additional funds!! I immediately asked for my deposit back even letting them have money for the 4 hours work. I have not received my money back and would not allow this unprofessional company near any yard. I had a vastly different experience than the other two reviews. During the bidding process Troy was the quickest, easiest to deal with and most thorough. Once I selected Yards Apart, they started almost immediately and completed a full backyard and front yard revamp in about two weeks. Troy had many creative ideas and developed and executed a backyard I am very happy with now. The communication was very good and we were constantly tossing ideas back and forth at each other. Yards Apart did our neighbor's landscaping, and it came out beautifully. During the process, due to an error by the neighbor in delineating our property line, a trench and small wall were sloped several feet over into my family's yard. When it was corrected, there was a long scar in our grass, running from the sidewalk all the way to our fenceline. The owner assured us that when he was done, it would be repaired completely, and he was true to his word. The area was cleaned up, filled in, and overlaid with sod. More than a month later and you cannot see what was an unsightly mess initially. We are so grateful that this was a "non-issue" and was rectified so well. Thank you, Yards Apart. read more

I spent $14,000 and my yard is a complete disaster. Troy is a nice guy but doesn't know anything about plants or landscaping. He put crushed granite in my front yard and driveway even though they are on a slope. He should have know that most of the granite would wash away. He came back once after I complained many times and put in a few bricks to stop the granite from washing out but it didn't help. Most of the granite in my driveway is gone and the weed barrier is almost completely exposed. The granite in the walkway up to the house has washed out and the remains of cement he was supposed to have removed are exposed. With respect to plants, he does not have basic knowledge. He crammed my front beds full of plants and I had to tell him they were too crowded to grow. Had he even read the tag on the plants he would have known was putting in 3 times the number that could reasonable be expected to grow in the space. He planted plants with absolutely no regard to sun needs and since most of my beds are shaded, almost all the plants I paid for have died. He paid little attention to water needs as well and despite my request for drought tolerant plants, he put in a plant i normally see growing in ponds. He told me I would be able to sit down with him and chose the plants for the yard but instead he bought them without my input. In the backyard I asked for grass in the middle of the yard where there is some sun. He covered most of the yard in sod, where, of course, it cannot grow. He neglected to put weed barrier in some of the areas in the front and although he came back and put it in one area, he never returned to fix another, which is completely overrun with grass. When I hired him I told him I was concerned about having to weed the front if we used granite. He told me that if he did the work, I wouldn't have to weed. Even in the places where there is weed barrier, my yard is full of weeds. I can't keep up with pulling them. When I pull up to my house and see my yard I want to move because I can't afford to repair the damage that has been done. read more
