It was very welcoming and clean with all new bathrooms with cozy robes, complimentary beer, fizzy water, biscuits, and we enjoyed some great food. Breakfast was included. Also very dog friendly! I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.

good points, nice decor, great pub atmosphere…read more on the downside; staff were a bit casual and one seemed miffed to serve customers. They took 50 minutes to take our starter order. Then it took 40 minutes to arrive. When it did it was minuscule!and came with a hefty price tag.didnt blow us away on flavour. We struggled to find a main course that actually tempted us (always a bad sign) and it sounded a bit too overdressed.Again It took forever to arrive.our meal tasted OK.but the food fusion 'idea' was very unsuccessful. They used cheap cuts, the portions were mean.and the few flavours there clashed. We considered the price tag was WAY too high for what we received.Pudding was ok.My pudding was drowning in double cream instead of the stated with clotted cream.when I finally chased down the waitress she was rude and suggested I'd ordered incorrectly. She did come back and offer me clotted cream but did not replace my drowning pudding,so I had to eat a double cream/clotted cream heart-attack of a pudding.Which was cold. Would I go again? Nope.

Gave this a try on the Bank Holiday and what a delightful find. A small country pub tucked away on…read morethe edge of the Blackdowns yet within reach of the A303. Recently updated throughout so all very modern. Full marks for retainings it drinking area but the rest given over to meals. A wide modern menu with plenty on offer. My food was excellent, full and deeply flavoured and well balanced. I cannot recommend this food enough! Portions were on the smaller modern side but no complaints there. Only slight quibble a tablespoon of chunks of young carrot and slices of corgette at the height of the vegetable season didn't quite cut it for me, but still far better than that usually offered elsewhere. My Otter Bitter was cyrstal clear and was a delight to drink. Staff were quietly attentive and even kept up their attention for desserts but then forgot to offer coffee or the bill. But again far better service than usually found. For once the staff paid attention to food adversions, were responsive and even offered choices! Prices at the high pub end but tolerable. A warm welcoming atmosphere without needing to become bosom pals and a nice mix and balance of clientel. Miss this at your peril.

He almost got it cooked perfectly for me and as anyone who has been out with me when I order a steak will testify, I'm a little picky about my steaks. There was no blood and the steak was nice and red in the middle, unfortunately it was bordering on blue and I had to get him to give it another 30 seconds on each side. It was all in all just an ok meal, a little lacklustre with presentation and not the best quality of meat severely let the Eagle Tavern down. My wifes steak and kidney pie was quite nice but once again nothing special. For a Saturday night at 8pm it was pretty devoid of atmosphere, a few couples and 1 group didn't really enliven the place much. There were no drinkers and given its position right on the A303 it seems to be an eating destination for a few locals and people like us who were passing and in need of sustenance on our way back to London. As there is not too much choice in the area its a good option for a bite while on the road but its not really a place to go out of your way for. That said they do have a very extensive menu including pizza, definitely more than your average pub grub so maybe we were just unlucky with what we chose.

I learnt from the…read morelandlord that the place had changed manager three times over the last three years and he was hoping to break that trend. He's brought a new team of chefs in with him, so I'm told. Those chefs certainly seem to be earning their money as they turned out excellent gastro pub style food. Not quite fine dining but not far off. Looking at the menu I could have chosen any of the starters or mains. I went for the goats cheese "mousse" for starters and fish from the specials board for mains. The portion of goats cheese I had was very generous (some places only give you a small amount because of cost I guess) although I felt it was a bit heavy to be a mousse. It was really nice all the same. The fish was perfectly cooked and the pommes anna was a perfect accompaniment. The pub's decor probably didn't quite match the quality of the food and I think some people will be surprised how good the food it. The was a really good range on the menu from unusual items (I'd never had samphire before) to regular items such as burgers and fish and chips. I'd definitely return and have already recommended it to friends. Check it out yelpers.

They seem to be good for families, although I don't have kids and nor do I particularly like them.. So that's probably a negative for me. The evening menu was great, quite pubby with the fish and chips, burger and steak, but they threw in some nicer things like scallops with cauliflower and bacon, plaice with caper butter and something else that I didn't order... It's not too pricey, so well worth a trip if you're in Somerset. As for Sunday, it was refreshing to see a pub that actually knows what a decent Sunday lunch is. It had non-standard veg going on, like beetroot and spinach. The potatoes weren't greasy and old like we're all used to in pubs. The yorkies were awesome too. I'll go again for sure.
