Dr Yamagata and her staff were wonderful helping me with my Goldendoodle, she was having an eye problem and I was referred. She spent so much time with us and explained things in a way I could understand.. I didn't feel rushed and appreciated her printing information out for me...She certainly put my mind at ease. My dog injured his left eye on New Years Day. I called and left a message knowing they would be closed but I wanted to get him in as soon as possible. They got me an appointment right away and he had the same procedure done on his left eye that he fix in his right eye 5 months ago. Dr. Yamagata and her staff are extremely caring and efficient. She is so good with my boy. She makes him feel comfortable and looks out for his welfare. Thank you again Dr Yamagata. read more

Their staff is the worst. Wouldn't let me talk to the vet and were very difficult to deal with. When there is an urgent medical issue my cat had her eye removed I expect better customer service. read more

Ginger who works with Dr Yamagata is amazing. My poor 14 yr old boy has developed a nasty corneal ulcer which is not responding to treatment under Dr McCurdy in Kihei and he needs to see an opthalmologist. Dr Yamagata is one of the only opthalmologists who visits Maui once a month to see furry patients and I've been trying desperately to get my boy on her schedule at Maui Central Animal Clinic. Ginger has been advising and helping me and answering my ever increasing phone calls patiently and with empathy. Mahalo Ginger! Anxious pet parents must be the bane of her life but she is so understanding and helpful. I'm hoping Dr Yamagata can cure my boys ulcer so he can see again and be pain free. read more

This eye clinic is very greedy. It was our second time visit. I was charged huge amount than what the receptionist told me in advance. I told the receptionist (this is high price, my dog is not first time visitor. ) she replied (the price has gone up.) read more

Okay, firstly she practices at Hawaii Veterinary Vision Care, which is located down the street from Lobster King by Ala Moana. It's on a small one-way street so that means tight parking. The building itself holds four cars but the next best thing is street parking. Secondly, my situation was pretty dire. My dog developed an ulcer in his eye that needed same-day or same-week attention from Dr. Yamagata (as recommended by own vet.). I'm so grateful that the receptionist there (can't recall her name) was able to schedule me in that same week for an urgent care appointment. It was originally a drop-off (drop off at 8 AM and pick up at 4 PM, Dr. Yamagata would have looked at my dog on her free-time) but I was lucky enough to get an urgent care appointment instead. The explained prices to me and it was really reassuring considering I was nervous about the bill (even asking if I wanted to continue scheduling my appointment knowing costs *BONUS). Today was my appointment with Dr. Yamagata and my first impression of her was that she was very professional (explaining procedures thoroughly, asking tons of questions about things I've never considered as possible explanations for his ailment, etc.) and so knowledgable about my dog's breed, saying things that I didn't even know! I couldn't be more grateful for her and her team for helping me during this time. She thoroughly explained everything to me, including medications, and I left the clinic feeling so much relief. I'm looking forward to my check-up in May! read more

I had to take my dog in as our regular vet had pre diagnosed cataracts. I made an appointment with Dr. Yamagata's office a few weeks back and took her in today. First off her staff were great from the front desk check in process to the vet techs that help out in the back. Dr. Yamagata was really good with our dog, did a patient thorough exam of both eyes and explained each procedure as she did them. She also explained what she saw based on her exam and went through our options. Cataract surgery is not a cheap procedure but once she confirmed the cataract diagnosis, she was very up front about the costs, the risks of the procedure as well as potential outcomes if we decide to not go through with the surgery. Overall it was a great first visit, I was impressed with Dr. Yamagata and her staff. read more

Dr Yamagata saved my dog's eye. She had an incredibly painful ulcer that needed the care of a specialist. Dr Yamagata was that specialist! We were going back almost every other day in the beginning, my baby was on an incredibly strict regimen of drops every hour around the clock, but...it's her EYE, and how do we not take care of that?!?! Eventually it healed and she can see out of that eye, there aren't words to explain how grateful I am for everything she did for our Milly! read more

My dog Daisy's eyes started to get cloudy about a year ago. we took her to the vet and he said that she had matured cataracts. we were pretty stunned. Daisy is only 6 years old, too young to have vision problems. the vet recommended Dr. Yamagata and told us to go see her soon. we made an appointment and went to see her. we found Dr. Yamagata to be very kind and caring doctor. She recommended that we have Daisy undergo cataract surgery. meanwhile, Daisy's vision was slowly getting worse. she was a little skittish about going out for walks and didn't want to play anymore. she was miserable. so we decided to do the surgery we were a little apprehensive. we didn't know what was going to happen and what the results were going to be but Dr. Yamagata thoroughly went over the procedure with us and what was going to happen post surgery. anyway, we had the surgery done and after the surgery, we noticed that Daisy was able to see right away and after 2 weeks of Daisy wearing the cone and the pills and the eye drops every 4 hours her eyes are clear and she is able to see We would like to thank Dr. Yamagata and her terrific staff in taking great care of Daisy and giving her life back Daisy is a different dog now. she runs, plays with her toys, chases birds and lizards and seems to be smiling all the time now. read more

We were referred to Dr. Yamagata from our regular vet for an issue our dog was having with her eyesight. It took a while to get an appointment, but once we met with Dr. Yamagata she took a long time to explain very clearly, in detail, what was going on with our dog's eyes. She used a model, a binder of photos, and other props to make sure that we understood exactly what was going on. Then she outlined our options in a very clear, but no-pressure way, and allowed us to come to our own decision. Throughout the entire interaction, I found Dr. Yamagata to be very knowledgeable, compassionate, and kind. She is everything we would want in a doctor. Dr. Yamagata is a wonderful vet. read more

Let me just start out by saying that Dr. Yamagata is a wonderful veterinarian. Very compassionate, knowledgeable, and kind. I've had to take two of my pets here and have been here no less than half a dozen times with more appointments to go. The staff is always very friendly but rather small. Because of this, communication can be a bit lacking - in terms of reminder calls and callbacks. Because she is the only specialist on the island her schedule gets full rather quickly. It is well worth the wait, though. For being a specialist, her fees are pretty reasonable, especially for Hawaii. Overall, I would recommend this clinic and this veterinarian. read more

She saved my one-eyed dog from losing her other eye, enough said. No, my dog is not named Lucky or Captain Sparrow!!!

We were referred from our military veterinary on base. The first examination of my pet's eyes took about 30-35 minutes. Dr. Yamagata did an eye exam on both of her eyes and noticed that one of her eyes have a medical condition (mild cataract). The second visit to her office, luckily my pet medical condition haven't changed at all after 6 months. She thoroughly explained to me that the medical condition of my pet and I was very satisfied with her diagnosis. Definitely, she knows her profession and she goes about her way to make you feel comfortable. Staff are very knowledgeable and very helpful! Thank you, Dr. Yamagata for everything! Very hard to find specialists that you can trust! We are definitely be back for our next appointment!! read more

Dr. Maya Yamagata and staff are absolutely wonderful!!! Dr. Yamagata performed emergency eye surgery on our beloved shitzu Sophie after her eye was horribly gashed at The Honolulu Pet Clinic while boarding. Dr. Yamagata was always professional, positive, kind and compassionate at our weekly appointments. We were devastated by Sophie's injury, and would not have made it through the past two and a half months of intensive care had it not been for Dr. Yamagata and her staff! Thank you so much for your amazing care!!! read more

If it were possible to give a zero, I would have chosen that option. If you love you pet, steer clear of this vet. That should be this "doctor's" moto. My pet had a problem where his internal eyelid kept flipping inside out. She charged me over $800 for surgery to fix it and the surgery undid itself three days later. She charged me another $800 to redo the same surgery that she botched and that undid itself a week later. I ended up seeing a different vet and she said that the eyelid was so damaged at that point, it needed to be removed. This lady is not a "specialist", she just calls herself that to charge people exorbitant prices for lousy, uncaring service. read more

This is the worst veterinarian I have EVER been to in my life. I wish there were negative stars to give. My dogs eye ruptured yesterday. The kaneohe VCA where I took him to, for emergency services, told me to contact her this morning because he needed surgery to repair his eye. They informed me she is the only one who did this type of surgery on island. We made an appointment for 8am on a Friday which is normal business hours. We show up and the receptionist was very young and inexperienced. She takes me back to the room and at this point my normal vet (feathers and fur in Kailua) had called back saying they could do the same blood draw and panel for $120 when she was trying to charge me $600. Her fee for just a consult was $280 to $380 already and surgery was $2800 to $3600. The Dr. came in and was very cold and rude off the bat. I simply asked her if I could please get the bloodwork done at his normal vet because it would help me a lot to save $500. She started to YELL AT ME stating I should have told her this over the phone and I was wasting her time. That she spent a good amount of time on the phone with the VCA already last night and I was wasting her time. I simply stated that a normal person can't just fork out $5,000 on any given day and she needed to be a little more compassionate with people and their pets and then I started to cry. She continued yelling at me saying this was not true and she saw my car I drove up in, and that I drive a nicer car than hers and that I could obviously afford it. (I drive a 12 year old lexus SUV and she drove a new Honda Pilot, not that this is even relevant.) At this point I picked my dog up while still crying as she continued to yell at me. I walked out so distraught I forgot my papers that were his medical records, discharge papers and instructions for his meds i recieved from the VCA last night and realized it a half a block away. I quickly turned around to retrieve them and she had closed the gate on me so I could not come back in. I called 5 to 6 times to just please let me have the paper work and she didn't respond. I honked my horn a few times and nothing. I ended up having to go back to VCA to get new copies of the paperwork while the entire time my dog is in the car suffering in pain. This woman is a heartless, money grubbing, malicious human being. She does not care about you and most of all she does not care about your pet. Please do not give her your money. Additionally the other customer that was in there told my husband that she double charged him a $400 emergency fee. So he ended up paying $800 on top of the consult, blood draw and surgery. THIS WOMAN IS EVIL read more

Staff was very professional when I came in. It did take 1.5 months to make an appt on the account that no one returned my calls. I finally left an angry voicemail telling them how many times I had called and asking why no one would return my call. I got a call back within the hour. They apologized and got an appt 30 days from when I finally spoke to someone. They have front paring which is nice. Wait was not long and Dr.yamagata was thorough. I like her conservative approach to first trying one treatment then checking back in a month to see if we need to try more medication on my dogs eyes. So I'm not happy that it took so long to get in but at least I know now my dog is in good hands. read more

I was referred to Dr. Yamagata via my vet at Feather & Fur. My vet did all she could, and we decided my dog needed more specialized care. It is a very long wait to see Dr. Yamagata (1-2 months), so I opted to pay the fee (approximately $85) in order to get an emergency appointment. During my dog's examination Dr. Yamagata was very gentle and explained what she was doing every step of the way. She was thorough and made sure that I understood my dog's condition and what the possible resulting scenarios might be. She explained the procedure she wanted to do, and told me that there was an 85% chance that my dog would respond positively to the treatment. We were then sent home with instructions for medicating her and told to return in 10 days. On our follow up visit, my dog had healed nicely, and Dr. Yamagata then instructed us on how to continue treating her condition. I am very happy with the results of the procedure Dr. Yamagata performed, and I am also thankful that she was kind and gentle with our dog. It's very stressful when your dog is sick, and I appreciate her compassion and making sure that we understand the situation. Services are expensive, but I'm completely satisfied and happy with this clinic and our results. I feel completely secure in recommending Dr. Yamagata to anyone who has a pet with an eye condition. read more

My dog has had many health issues since he was a young dog including a dry eye that didn't respond to conservative treatments. Dr, Yamagata surgically fixed that and his eye was fine until recently. Through the years he has had manageable but chronic skin problems, allergies, big lipomas, and ear infections. More recently he had a soft tissue sarcoma, surgically removed, and lymphoma now in remission from a full course of chemotherapy. When the lesion on his eye showed up, we were again afraid he had yet another cancer. Her staff worked with me and my schedule to set up a time to see him as soon as was practical based on his regular vet's recommendations. Dr, Yamagata's care, exam, diagnosis, and explanations of options, impact on our dog, treatments, prognosis, and costs were compassionate, clear, and definitely working with me for the sake of our furry family member. We are awaiting pathology reports and a course of treatment is already planned depending on the results. I have peace of mind that my boy is being cared for by the best and I am reassured by her professionalism and the courtesy of her staff, as well. I highly recommend Dr. Yamagata. read more

Maya Yamagata kept me waiting for 50 minutes after a 2 month wait for an appointment. When I suggested to her staff that clients could be called and notified that Dr. Yamagata is "running late" they said they do not do that. She then sent a staff member out to tell me she would not see my dog if I "had an attitude." No consideration for clients, and worse, no compassion for animals! read more

I already wrote a review about the business so this is pertaining just to Dr. Maya Yamagata. She is absolutely wonderful. From the very start she was friendly, compassionate and knowledgeable. She was very thorough with her questions for us regarding out cat's medical history and she proceeded to give him his eye examination. When she was done, she gave my girlfriend and I a very thorough explanation of his diagnosis and possible treatments. For our situation, surgery would be very risky so she helped us come to a conclusion that medication and observation would be better. She didn't immediately suggest the most expensive option, which was a breath of fresh air from what we might have expected from others in this same profession. She is the only doctor on the island that specializes in this but I'd still highly recommend seeing her anyway! read more

Dr. Yamagata has come over to Maui every 3-4 months to see pets on island. She's always been very professional, caring and friendly. She helped us understand what is going on with our dog and takes a conservative approach. Our visits are very reasonable in terms of cost. I am really grateful that she comes over and that she is such a great eye vet. She was highly recommended by our dog's eye doctor in CA, who had helped train her years previously. Overall, it's always been a great experience with her. read more

My Pomeranian dog had a cataract in his right eye about 4 years ago and his right eye turned completely white. I was quite alarmed and took him to dr. Yamagata. She said they would have to do some tests to see if he was a good candidate to have surgery. He was a good candidate and she did tell us after his surgery he would need many checkups and follow up office visits. After the surgery he had to wear a cone and he went for endless checkups and dr. Yamagata said the surgery went well and he could see. But as we kept taking him a couple of weeks later we all noticed his eye looked cloudy and the she said she wasn't sure why but wasn't too sure if he could see! I was needless to say very disappointed and now his eye is completely white! We continue giving him eye drops for the pressure in his eye. I had to write this review to let the public know that it's not guaranteed surgery that will work and after paying over 5k with the surgery and $100plus each follow up visit it was a expensive surgery that didn't work for my dog. So please think twice and know that besides the very high costs the eye sight may not be restored from this surgery. read more

I do not normally fill out online reviews for anyone or anything. But, after having read some of the other reviews of Dr. Yamagata, I wanted, and needed!, to share my own experience. I cannot say enough good things about her. She and her staff were very accommodating in allowing our 70 lb golden retriever to be seen on an urgent basis - even though that involved coordinating her surgical appointment with timing of Mokulele Airline flights, since I was flying our dog over from Maui, where we live. Our dog had a corneal ulceration that was not responding to usual (and standard) care on Maui, and our Maui Vet recommended Dr. Yamagata. The staff, in particular Ginger, was exceedingly friendly and had many words of comfort for me, being an extremely anxious "parent". After examining our dog on the morning we arrived, Dr. Yamagata talked to me and explained the surgery she was going to do. She explained everything clearly, slowly, and calmly - all with an underlying tone of confidence and reassurance. And even though I am an M.D., she explained everything in easily understood lay terms. Then, when I went to pick up our dog that afternoon, Dr. Yamagata came out to the waiting room and patiently explained everything, with concise and clear explanations for our dog's post-op care. She spent several minutes talking with me, and I never felt like I was being rushed out of there. Plus, the manner in which she explained everything, I could tell she is a very caring veterinarian. We had our 2-week follow-up today with our Maui vet, and our dog's eye had completely healed properly from the surgery. So, from my own personal experience, I would not hesitate at all recommending Dr. Yamagata to any dog/pet owner. read more

We are very grateful for Dr. Yamagata. She did a fabulous job with my dog's 'entropion' eye lids condition. I rescued a 50 lb. black Sharpei who was harmless and gentle but she did not have a home. We decided to keep her and take on the responsibility which nobody else did. After receiving her and getting an assessment and evaluation I learned this is common in a Sharpei. We were fortunate to be recommended to Dr. Yamagata and we were not going to look to other options of who would do the surgery. She came to us as a referral by a trusted source and we put our trust and confidence with Dr. Yamagata and she delivered. Following the surgery there were no signs of she having any prior surgery at all. The surgery was flawless you couldn't tell she even had surgery on both eyes. It was a success and we are grateful. Thank you Dr. Yamagata! read more

Avoid this neurotic woman if possible and find a doctor who genuinely cares for animals and provides professional service. I found her to be completely disconnected, with no empathy for my sick cat, she was rude, abrasive, and enjoys talking over the top of people and will not allow you get a word in. Upon entering the examination room I was bombarded with a hundred questions, most of which she should have known the information in advance from the medical records given to her by the referral doctor. It is not reasonable to expect me to know the entire medical information and history of my cat from the past 8 years... but that's why your health provider keeps a medical history. Why didn't she spend a few minutes reading over it to find that information? It was easy to see by the way she impatiently rushed right through the examination she is just a number cruncher and more concerned about meeting her financial quotas than she is genuinely concerned about the health of your pet. In all fairness she may have been having a bad day and who knows what personal issues she has but after one visit that lasted less than 5 minutes I think she should be the one making an appointment to see a doctor. Maybe she has fallen into routine with her job and is not happy? NOT a professional at all, avoid by all means necessary. read more
