I specifically asked before booking, at check-in, and again after the appointment. The visit itself lasted about 1-2 minutes. The dentist performed a brief visual exam and told me everything looked fine. No periodontal probing, charting, or treatment planning was done. The office initially billed my insurance under a comprehensive periodontal evaluation code, which did not reflect the services performed. After I questioned it, they resubmitted the claim under a limited exam code, which was then denied due to frequency limitations. I was ultimately required to pay $50 to avoid collections. What disappointed me most was not just the billing issue, but the lack of empathy when I raised concerns to "Rafi". There was no acknowledgment of the miscommunication or incorrect initial coding .. just a firm statement that it was "my responsibility." Clear communication about coverage and better billing transparency would have prevented this situation. I hope the office improves this process for future patients. very disappointed.

I have only amazing things to say about Dr. Nakashyan at Burbank Periodontics and I highly…read morerecommend him. I had to have a tooth extracted and decided to get an implant, which is one of the best decisions I've made. Dr. Nakashyan and his team were extremely professional from the very beginning. He explained everything to me in detail and always wanted to make sure that all of my questions were answered. The entire process was very smooth and extremely painless. Thank you so much Dr. Nakashyan! I really appreciate everything you did for me. I will absolutely come see you again for all of my periodontics needs.

**Revised to address the Doctor's response - what an awful, untrustworthy and condescending person…read more First, he called me to discuss this review and offered a free consultation in exchange for taking down this review, which I believe is a violation of Yelp's terms. Second, what he states below is completely different from both what his staff said over the phone and not at all what he shared with me when we spoke. He was adamant that they needed to charge all fees up front. He reiterated numerous times that he wasn't a benefits expert but he has advisors and staff he trusts to understand it better. So when I shared that I am well versed on insurance benefits, both as a patient and a plan administer for my own company, I thought he might actually take interest in learning about how unethical it is to charge a patient twice. Instead he repeatedly spoke over me and told me that - while he himself wasn't knowledgeable on insurance, clearly I must still be wrong. Now he's writing that they only do this in some cases (no insurance or out of network), but all the sudden he's now saying that they only charge an estimate when the are in network - first time that's being said. This person continually spoke over me and let his ego drive the conversation. I hung up when it was clear that he had zero respect for me or the time I offered after he asked to speak to me. In no world is this someone I would trust with the health of my jaw or ever being under anesthesia. To purposely call someone to deride them when you have no real knowledge is its own ethical issue. Get your business in order, sir. First, it took three calls and two voicemails to even hear from anyone. Second, the billing practices are completely unethical - they bill you up front for all services AND then bill your insurance. They claim they'll reimburse you whatever insurance decides to pay. It's beyond unethical. Finally, their front office is wildly unhelpful. Not only do they not return calls, but they can't answer basic questions like how much a consultation costs. Between ethics violations, insurance fraud and incompetent administration, I'm not sure how they got so many 5 star reviews without paying for them (insanely common for dentists and plumbers on Yelp).

I had a very disappointing experience at Healthy Smiles Dental in Sherman Oaks and would strongly…read moreadvise others to proceed with caution. Before my appointment, no one reviewed or explained the charges for my deep cleaning. I have dual PPO insurance, and I know deep cleanings are covered, yet I was still charged a significant out-of-pocket amount. I was never informed that a laser would be used, nor that it would be an additional charge per quadrant. I assumed it was part of the standard procedure. This was never discussed or consented to prior to treatment. Even more concerning, my son and I were separated and taken to different rooms, and they proceeded to do multiple fillings on my son without ever informing me how many were needed or asking for my consent. No one came to explain the treatment plan before starting, during my own procedure, or afterward. As a parent, this is completely unacceptable. At no point was I given a clear treatment plan or cost breakdown for either of us. Despite having dual insurance coverage, I was still charged $621 out of pocket. When I asked for an itemized receipt, I was told they could not provide one, which is a huge red flag. This office feels extremely money-driven, with poor communication and questionable consent practices. I truly regret not paying closer attention to the reviews before booking here. Transparency, consent, and trust are critical in healthcare--and this office failed on all three. Please avoid this place and protect yourself and your family.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was honestly one of the most unethical and…read moremisleading experiences I've had with a healthcare provider. I recently moved to Downtown Los Angeles and decided to try a local dental office instead of continuing to drive to my longtime dentist in the Valley. I thought I found a trustworthy office, especially since the receptionist and doctor were Iranian like me, which made me feel more comfortable initially. Unfortunately, that trust was completely misplaced. From the beginning, the receptionist was oddly pushy and pressured me to come in the same day despite me clearly saying I had a long workday and was exhausted. Looking back, that should have been my first red flag. Before my appointment, I sent over my insurance card. At absolutely no point did anyone inform me that this doctor was OUT OF NETWORK. No warning. No transparency. Nothing. When I arrived, they immediately proceeded with scans and X-rays without clearly explaining costs or coverage. They provided with a false estimate for my review, no words again at all again the costs may change based off the fact that we are out of network. I was then pressured into an expensive "deep cleaning" after being told that if I didn't do it, I could potentially end up with severe health consequences, even cancer. Fear-based tactics in a dental office are completely unacceptable. I paid around $1,300 out of pocket that same day for the treatment they strongly pushed. Then, a month later, I received an additional surprise bill for over $600 because, surprise, the office was out of network and many services were not covered. What made this even worse was the complete lack of professionalism afterward. When I tried contacting the office to discuss the billing discrepancy, my calls were ignored. I specifically asked to speak with the receptionist who handled my intake and insurance information, and I was repeatedly told she was "busy" and that she would call me back. She never did. Instead, I later received an email containing a completely different explanation of the charges and why I supposedly owed an additional $600. The explanations were inconsistent, unclear, and did not align with what was communicated during my visit. The issue is not whether I can afford the bill. I can. The issue is the principle, the lack of transparency, and the unethical way this office conducts business. I have been to multiple dentists throughout my life and have NEVER experienced a situation where an office withheld out-of-network information after receiving my insurance in advance, while simultaneously pushing expensive procedures without full financial disclosure. Patients deserve honesty, transparency, and informed consent....not pressure, scare tactics, and surprise bills afterward.

She told me to call back for a follow up if it persisted. Once the numbness wore off, the bite was definitely wrong. The filling felt too flat on top and didn't line up with my upper molar. I went back on Feb 20 for an adjustment, but Hyeyoung Cho came into the room with a hostile attitude. She basically started interrogating me. It's hard enough to articulate a bite issue since you can only go by feel, but her intimidating vibe made it so much worse. I felt so uncomfortable in the chair that I eventually just said "it's okay now" purely so I could get out of there and escape the hostile environment. After stepping out, I gathered myself and went back inside to try and resolve the issue one more time. The dentist practically yelled at me. She dismissively told me that if I wanted to get it checked, I should just go see another dentist. I have never had a professional act this way. You'd expect basic respect, especially when you're seeking help for discomfort caused by the dentist's own procedure. Her behavior was incredibly rude, showed a total lack of professionalism, and she outright refused to provide standard follow up care.
