Yummy - so glad my friend recommended Yama Sushi! Parking lot adjacent to restaurant. Inside has some seats. The hot food area was pretty much sold out when I showed up at 2 pm. California Roll And chicken katsu was delicious! Easy pay at the counter. Looking forward to returning to try the hot food.

This is by far the best place to get fairly priced, high quality sushi. I really wish we had this in the Bay. I love that you choose the fish and they cut it into sashimi for you. I got salmon, hamachi, and chutoro. All of it was sooo good. Zero fishiness. Every piece was plump and firm with clean cuts, not broken up or mushy, and it had that clean, slightly sweet taste fresh fish should have. I'm normally put off by the aftertaste of tuna, even at expensive omakase, but this chutoro had none of that and I could actually appreciate the flavor of the fish. What surprised me most was the California rolls. They're massive, rolled perfectly, and actually packed with filling. What made my meal was taking a slice, putting a piece of my sashimi on top, and eating it together. Basically a cracked out rainbow roll for a fraction of the price. The crab roll was solid too. I was surprised I could get a roll with real crab at that price. Service was super friendly and store was clean. I really can't wait till I'm back in SoCal. This was worth every penny!

Sushi (Sep 2026)

Yama Sushi Marketplace is an extremely popular grab-and-go sushi shop and this is one of Yama Sushi's newer locations. Ever since the original owner Kenzo Yamada sold the marketplace to the Kohno family (two family members are retail consultants for Japanese department stores) and partner Alex Soto in 2021, Yama Sushi has been expanding beyond the flagship location in San Gabriel. There are currently 3 locations (San Gabriel, West LA, and Koreatown) as of September 2026 with a new 4th location in Sherman Oaks coming soon. [Parking]: Yama shares the same small and free parking lot with Chipotle and the lot is typically packed during busy hours, but there's a high turnover rate so cars are constantly driving in and out of the lot. Even if the lot is packed, there's still free street parking. [Atmosphere]: The marketplace is constantly busy with limited indoor and outdoor seating. [Ordering sashimi]: Visitors take a number first. Once your number is called, then visitors can select fishes that they want and a staff member will cut the fishes into sashimi. [Hot deli]: This location actually offers a hot deli unlike the flagship location in San Gabriel. Some of the items include chicken curry, curry pan, chicken katsu, unagi don, char siu bao, etc. Please note that many of these hot deli items were sold out by the time I got here at 6 PM. [Signature items]: Yama is best known for its signature California Rolls and the shop is constantly making these rolls due to high turnover rates so you know they are always fresh. Another one of my favorite items is the Poke Bowls, but they are always sold out past lunchtime. *** Bara Chirashi (jewels of the sea - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, ika, tamago, avocado, ikura, and seasoned rice - $14.95): This is one of their new items and honestly it is hard to find a chirashi bowl that costs less than $15 in 2026 and tastes this fresh nowadays. A-tier item. Unagi don (aka eel bowl - $9.95): This is one of the most inexpensive eel bowls in Los Angeles and Orange County. It is unbelievable how they can sell an eel bowl for less than $10 in 2026 when places like Marugame Udon sell their grilled eel bento for $20+. S-tier item. *** Come here for lunch for the best experience with the full selection. Expect fresh quality fish and incredible value at Yama. It would be nice if Yama decided to open another location in the South Bay with Torrance being the home to one of the largest Japanese populations outside of Japan. P.S. - Extra $0.20 for a takeout bag.

I discovered this small sushi market in the center of Mar Vista during 2024, and it has become my preferred lunch destination in Los Angeles. The sushi at Yama is impressive, and their California rolls stand out as a requirement on every visit. The quality surpasses Marukai or Tokyo Central when you want quick sushi. Service moves quickly, drawing a blend of remote workers, tourists, and locals collecting their meals. Seating is available inside and outside, shared with the adjacent Chipotle. Parking can be somewhat challenging with the constant flow in the lot, yet finding a space is manageable.

I have to update my original review of 3 stars. Remi (one of the owners) reached out about my last review and was very professional and seemed legitimately concerned about my complaint. After talking with her, I decided to go back and give them another try and we've had nothing, but positive experiences since. Adding a star for averaging up! Still working on the smiles, but the girl at the morning counter was nicer. I usually come in the evenings, so different vibe. Want to add that I ordered one of their next day catering platters and found them to be delicious and reasonably priced. Also, pickup was made so easy! Thanks, Yama. More to come:)

This place is an LA staple for a reason. The sushi is excellent, fresh, and incredibly affordable by LA standards. It's the perfect spot to grab a bunch of rolls to share. I've never had a roll I didn't like and their teriyaki salmon is also delicious. The only difficult part is finding a spot to eat because seating is limited and they're always packed, but I won't count that against them. They're popular.

Everything has been said about this place. Clean, fast & friendly service. The best grab and go sushi for an affordable price. The only downside is the parking since this place is so popular!

Located inside a small marketplace in Sawtelle. There's a parking lot but it was pretty tight and packed when I got there so I would prepare to potentially park on the street. There were some small tables inside and a couple right outside but seating overall is pretty limited Definitely very affordable overall and good portion sizes. My boyfriend and I were pretty satisfied after sharing 3 items. Everything was super good and I couldn't really decide on a favorite

My husband saw someone review this place on TikTok, and knowing I'm the sushi lover that I am, he brought me here! It's a small place and definitely gets crowded. It was a little confusing at first trying to figure out where we were supposed to grab the sushi plates. They restock pretty often, so if it's packed when you go, you may end up waiting in a crowd for someone to come restock the fridge shelves. We waited about 5 minutes before someone came out and restocked a ton of plates, so that was definitely a plus. That being said, it does feel like people are kind of pushing through to make sure they grab what they want. We got California rolls, salmon nigiri, and tuna rolls. The California rolls were definitely my favorite! Everything tasted fresh, and the prices were really affordable. Was it worth getting pushed around? Definitely not ! But I can see why people love the hype. Good sushi at a good price!

Tracy C.

Bought lunch with sashimi. Only found out there's no soy sauce in the bag after I got back to work. This is horrible. Poor service of cash register staffs............ 5 stars for the chef and food preparation crews. 1 star for cash register staffs.

Finally went to Yama Sushi and while I knew it would be good I was shocked by how much I enjoyed everything. The quality was amazing and the cuts were perfect. I thought there'd be a larger selection of nigiri but maybe options change daily. The place was packed but the line was very fast. There's minimal seating, so definitely plan ahead.

9/10 toro takuan roll 9/10 chirashi 7/10 lemon salmon roll 8/10 California roll 7/10 premium tuna nigiri 7/10 albacore nigiri 8/10 salmon avocado roll This is not sit down sushi, grab and go. You can sit at one of their cafe tables after you pay. Slightly more elevated than grocery store sushi. They are making it fresh and constantly replenishing the cases. California is huge and good, I'm just not a big California roll person. It's my least favorite sushi roll and I still like it here, I couldn't eat a whole one by myself it's too much. Toro takuan roll & chirashi are my favorite things I've tried here. I'm super picky and only like fresh salmon. Sometimes the salmon is good, sometimes it's a little fishy. Hands down the best sushi from a supermarket given the quantity, price and quality. Their portions are generous and their prices are reasonable. It's not super fancy but well done for what it is.

This place is a hidden gem. Fresh sashimi and great price. So many delicious options to pick from including hot items too. Parking lot is little bit small but can park in the neighborhood behind the lot. You can grab a number too if want them to cut a tuna or sashimi grade salmon for you.

Ask the Community - Yama

Curious if Yama has any sort of rewards/loyalty program?

Not that I know of Nick.

Is this location on National temporarily closed? I read it somewhere and they're not calling back.

They shouldn't be. I was just there a few weeks ago and it was super busy

Do they have any wild-caught seafood?

No they sell baked goods

Do they make brown rice sushi?

I have not seen brown rice sushi sold at either San Gariel or westside locations.

Do they sell sawagni crabs?

I have never seen sawagani crabs sold at Yama. Their stock inventory on fresh items are limited but good.

Do they sell Uni? How much? Thank you

I haven't noticed any sea urchin among their wares. But you should just phone and ask. They are very friendly. But their offerings currently are limited. However it is my sense that they are into building and growing so perhaps tomorrow...?

Do you ever carry live oysters?

no

How is parking?

There's a small free parking lot adjacent.

The oysters and salmon were especially memorable--about as fresh as seafood gets. We ended up ordering far more than we probably should have, but it gave us a chance to sample a good cross-section of the menu. We started with a half dozen oysters and the mussels before moving on to the branzino, cioppino, and Yukon potatoes. Everything was excellent, and the portions were generous enough that we brought more than half of our entrées home for another meal. I'd only been to the seafood market once before, but this dinner reminded me that there's much more to this place than buying fresh fish. Since I work nearby, I've already decided to make Friday stops part of my routine so I can pick up fresh seafood for dinner on the way home. Would we come back? Absolutely. Whether you're looking for an outstanding seafood meal or fresh fish to take home, Santa Monica Seafood is well worth the visit.

We hoped we could at least salvage some of them, but sadly, none were edible. This has never happened before, and for it to mold in less than 2 days of purchase is such a disappointment. Nearly $20 went straight into the trash, which is extremely disappointing. What's more concerning is that this experience now makes me question the freshness and quality of other products sold at the store--something I had never questioned before, especially given the premium prices.

Curry is usually the 2nd option in most places. Although it had curry flavor. Something was missing. Maybe some spice or something. But I also love bolder flavors, so it might be perfect for everyone else. Overall, I got to try this place since it's been on my list. My bill was about $95 before tip. Most of these dishes are easier to find while traveling through exotic regions. Now when I'm home in LA and dining at a French restaurant, I ritualistically order escargot with my bordeaux. Subconsciously, I love the way those two rhyme and how well they go with freshly churned French butter and crusty bread. And ever since Cafe Beaujolais in Eagle Rock permanently closed their doors a few years ago, I've been missing my go-to dish served with crusty bread and an authentic accent. Sure, I've eaten at Monsieur Marcel many times and many years ago, but this stroll through the Farmer's Market opened my eyes to something I never noticed before - escargot on ice. Yes, I got giddy. TAKE HOME & BAKE 225℉ for 10 minutes. It's that simple. The service counter was helpful & clean so I felt like I was in good hands. Truth be told, I don't think I've enjoyed escargot this fresh before. Not even in Paris! Perhaps it's the way they're prepared or just that they're top-notch in quality, but the snails were delicately soft and not one bit rubbery. The buttery garlic filling was muah, délicieux. On your way out, don't forget to swing by Michelina Los Angeles for fresh, crusty French bread to sop up all that garlicky-buttery yumminess. WHAT A DEAL Just $1.89/each. If it wasn't for the calorie content of the butter, I'd probably order a full dozen all for myself. I'll have to give their caviar, bay shrimps, and snow crab claws a try next time. I'm sure they're worth their price in terms of freshness. FUN FACT Although Monsieur Marcel serves New Orleans Shrimp, if you're an adventurous eater looking for Frog Legs, you'll need to go to The Gumbo Pot at the other side of the Farmer's Market for that particular Nawlins delicacy. Personally, I'd recommend you take home the escargot first.
