There was quite a lengthy line to get in (so buy your tix in advance), and I thought the $10 ticket price high for what's on offer (one room halved into comics and illustrators, with occasional lectures scheduled). That said, there seemed to be everything from affordable 50-cent books on up to autographed limited edition prints of The Avengers. And from the artists, you could purchase finished work or commission illustrations of your-superhero-self or ideas. Affordably, too! I know this is put on by a small local comic book store, but there's definitely room to grow and improve... the costume contest was heavily delayed beyond the posted times, and had no clear direction (when to line up, where to line up), plus no real opportunity for spectators to photograph (other than the group photo, which frankly, had so many people, it was hard to even tell what you're looking at). More programming. And maybe more diversity of attractions. Are figurines and special effects prosthetics not part of the whole comics experience?

So I had to see for myself what was drawing all these people in. William welcomed me when I walked in, asked what I normally read, and let me know there was an upstairs as well, with more books. I did just stay on the first floor this visit, but I was so impressed by their beautifully curated inventory. They carry a wonderful selection of new fiction, poetry, children's books, and used books, along with fascinating sections on art, music, and nonfiction. They even had a discount section with books priced at $3.98 or less, which is incredible! They also have dedicated topic tables that highlight local North Carolina authors and underrepresented voices, which is wonderful to see. I found some board books to donate to the Little Free Library I was at the other day. If you've been reading my reviews for a while now, you know I love history and the architecture of older buildings being reused. It is an inclusive store, so everyone is welcome. It is a community-owned cooperative bookstore. The 1915 building, originally home to Merchants Bank, was built after the 1914 fire in Durham. It is a Neoclassical Revival-style building with massive, majestic Ionic columns that define its street-facing storefront. It later became Hood Industrial Bank and was then used for businesses like Letters. Letters opened back in 2013 at a nearby location and moved into its current space in 2021. I wish I had gone to the second floor to see the stained glass ceiling. So that just means I will need to make another shopping visit. I need to give myself more time so I can find something for me to read next time.

Really a place for people who like to do nose powder *sniff*. Used to be a safe place for LGBTQ. It seems like they only open the kitchen for certain people. But show up when you search up food downtown... They keep it dark I guess to help hide with the sexual harassment happening on the dance floor. I watched their own karaoke host to be groped. I would not recommend Magic by David based on my experience…read more When I first spoke with him about a month before the event, he quoted $300 for the magic show and mentioned an additional $75 for balloon twisting and face painting. I confirmed the $300 and told him I would decide later about the add-ons. He also asked for a $27 booking fee, assuring me that it would be deducted from the total amount. About three weeks later, I called to inform him that I did not want the add-ons. He insisted that I must take them, saying that his assistant would be present for the entire duration and that the package could not be changed. Since the difference was $75, I agreed. He mentioned that with taxes, the total would be $396,--which he had never mentioned before that their will be tax--and requested that payment be made in cash, Cash App or via Venmo, which I found unusual. On the day of the birthday party, as soon as he arrived, he demanded $396 before bringing in his setup. I reminded him that I had already paid a $27 booking fee, but he refused to deduct it, saying that the Booking fee was separate. I ended up paying the full $396 anyway. He had promised a one-hour interactive show to keep all the kids engaged. However, the magic show lasted only about 40 minutes, and the face painter stopped after 30 minutes, leaving several kids disappointed. Altogether, the entire performance was over in less than 40 minutes, far short of what was promised.I've attended several other birthday parties with magicians, and they always allowed all the kids to touch the animals. However, this magician only let the birthday girl and her sister touch the animals, which made other kids unhappy. Additionally, I noticed unprofessional behavior. The tissue roll I had refilled in the morning went missing, and I later saw it with the magician. After the event, it vanished (the magician took it away with him). He was also seen peeking into the children's gifts, even holding one of the return gifts and curiously looking inside, which made me uncomfortable. Overall, this experience was very disappointing. The service was unprofessional, misleading, and not worth the amount charged. I would strongly advise others not to hire Magic by David for their events.
