Yes, you do see buckets all over the place collecting water, and yea its home to a former Jc Penny's, few local businesses are still there and different medical places and a church. This past weekend, I decided as of recently, to shop more local for Christmas presents, as retail ( certain stores) are a bit difficult to go to currently. Finished up shopping with a few smaller items for people, all the vendors were friendly, and pleasent to chat with. I do hope they are able to restore their small movie theater and bring some life back into the establishment. Its nice though that they are trying to still hold events to promote local businesses.

The Clarence Senior Center is my mom's home-away-from-home. She's 80 and I don't know what she or I…read morewould do without this fantastic place! The senior center's director is an amazing woman who really cares about not just her job, but for those for whom she does this job. And the activities director is also pretty fantastic. She makes sure the seniors have movie nights, exercise classes, relevant guest speakers, and even fun trips. There are a lot of volunteer opportunities at the senior center as well. The building is sometimes used as a shelter during storms, and some of the seniors will volunteer to work during these times. In addition, it's used as a polling place, where many seniors find opportunities to serve their community. My mom also volunteers in the kitchen sometimes helping to prepare meals, at the front desk, and wherever else there's a need. She has delivered meals for Meals on Wheels through a program at the Clarence Senior Center. Every month we get a newsletter in the mail that outlines all the great programs that are available to members. Some things are there every month: weekly Bingo, Pinochle, Wood working, and a few other things. But then sometimes there are local trips, like to the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute and restaurant. They occasionally have mystery tours as well, where the travelers signed up don't know where they are going until they get there. Those are always fun trips (I know because my mom has asked me to join her on a few of them). If you've got a parent or loved one who is looking for somewhere they can go to play cards or Bingo or just to hang out and meet other seniors, this is a safe and welcoming environment. The building recently underwent an extensive renovation and the addition nicely merges with the original space. I like how the "quieter" spaces including the stacks and reading rooms are in the original building while the more public, conversational spaces are in the new space. They retained parts of the original outer stone wall but incorporated them so that they feel like a natural interior structure and subconsciously divide the contemplative from the conversational spaces. The recurring artwork motif representing an abstract forest adds a nice art deco element that ties the place together in warm colors. The staff were lovely and clearly know their patrons well from what little I overheard. They bring joy to the place in which they clearly take pride in working.

Things are easy to find, and they have a nice table in the entrance with pamphlets and flyers about what is going on in the Greater Rochester Area. Scottsville Library is a staple for families with children. The Monroe County Library system seems to do a wonderful job with programs for kids to encourage literacy, and activities during times when school is not in session. If you are looking to save a buck, come in and rent some DVDs, and then grab a pizza from the Scottsville Saloon across the street to complete a date night/family night.

First and foremost they host a variety of events weekly, many of them free, some with a small fee. From chair yoga, altogether a men's Bible study to coffee hour, to monthly family fun bingo they have something for everyone! They have also been hosting a series of wellness events fir summer. Follow them on Facebook to check out what is going on, there is always something new. The transformation of the place is also incredible. From the beautiful murals on the outside to the gorgeous inside it is a great place to host an event. We had my baby shower there and it was a great spot with chairs and tables and a great space for set up.

The staff were welcoming and the building is lovely. They have a great sense of history in this building. Patrons were using the resources and socializing, making this a great public space. Even with lots of questions from different patrons, the staff were cheerful, easily handed off work and supported each other, and made sure everything worked like clockwork.
