Finally, on memorial day 2026 I kept that promise and was I surprised! Brownstone is far from "a small, probably par three practice course". It is an eighteen-hole, challenging course that tests one's skill and allows players to use every club in their arsenal. The fairways and greens are well laid out and impeccably maintained. I arrived about fifteen minutes late for my tee time because of some construction in Memphis as I drove to the course from Tunica, MS. When I called, the woman in the pro shop was very nice and assured me that it would be ok if I was a bit late. As it turned out, the course wasn't crowded with golfers but there was a lot of activity at the facility from a family reunion taking place there. I paid my fee which I thought, pre-round, was reasonable. Post-round I felt that a slightly higher greens fee would have been justified. Wait. Did I just say I should have been charged more? Yes I did, and yes, I meant it. This is an outstanding course, and I have paid more for less many times in many places. I don't get to play very often but I long ago recognized that the staff has a great impact on players' club experience. The staff at Brownstone is A#1. To a person they were friendly, personable, and helpful. They more than made up for all the balls I left in the water hazards.

Our room overlooked a staircase instead of the store view we were led to expect, and there was nothing particularly luxurious about it. Even the "fireplace" was just a light effect, which felt misleading. The service was the biggest letdown. Most of the staff we encountered were unfriendly or dismissive. Housekeeping came by around 9:00 a.m. while I was getting dressed, and because I couldn't let them in at that moment, our room was never serviced for the rest of the day. No one returned. Calling the front desk was equally frustrating--we repeatedly waited on hold with no answer and ultimately had to go downstairs in person anytime we needed assistance. The layout and amenities were also disappointing. Guests could use the express elevator going up, but not coming down, which made little sense. The hallways were extremely dark and honestly felt uncomfortable and unsafe. Amenities were sparse, and room service after 11:00 a.m. was basically limited to burgers, offering very little variety. We were also attending events during our stay, and unfortunately the food served at every function was consistently poor. The location inside Bass Pro Shops is certainly unique, but the novelty wasn't enough to make up for the lack of service, misleading expectations, and overall value. For the premium price, I expected a true luxury experience. Instead, it felt more like paying luxury rates for a very average hotel. I wouldn't choose to stay here again.

He said that was the lowest rate. So he canceled my first night and raised my rate the second night. When checking in online I requested a late check out for 12:00 pm. the next morning housekeeping knocked on the door at 9:30 am asking if we were checking out yet. We told her no not at 9:30 am. She came back again at 11:15 and asked if we are checking out. I told her yes at 12:00 as I had checked the complimentary 1 hour late check out. She said okay and walked away. Not 5 minutes later another woman came to the door asking for clarification. I explained again checking out at 12:00 pm as I checked the complimentary 1 hour late check out. She said okay. Then the gentleman who gave the room away two nights before came knocking on the door and told me, they do not do complimentary late check out. I asked how is that possible when I checked marked that option while checking in online. He again said, it was not an option and we needed to check out. At this point it was 11:30ish. I told him we would be out by 12:00pm. When I brought up housekeeping coming to the door at 9:30 am, he said they can come knock on the door when they come to work to check and that all motels do this. So, on one occasion (after seeing a colleague order this), I tried the Handheld Fried Chicken Biscuit and hash browns with hot honey sauce on the side. The homemade biscuits that this chef makes will make you swoon as your eyes roll back in your head--just the right texture, light, buttery, and hot; what a combination. The problem (depending on who you ask) is that it's hard to eat just one. I watched, with humor, one morning as a baby (around one year old) held one of the chef's biscuits in his tiny hands and tried to stuff the whole thing (as they do) into his mouth. He eventually realized that it was not going to work. So, he broke off small sections and devoured that biscuit; it was so funny to watch. On another occasion, the chef happened to see me and encouraged me to try the biscuit and gravy. Wow, the sauce he makes to go on top is downright "good eating". Another thing I appreciate is that the restaurant knows how to properly cook bacon as opposed to serving it half-cooked; yuck and yikes. It's always crisp and tasteful to the palate. All, again, without our permission. We absolutely won't stay here again and I would recommend looking at other luxury hotels in the area instead.
